4.5Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve(594 reviews) - Great tour; definitely worth the effort to drive up to the cave Spent 2-3 hours National Parks • Caverns & Caves
ALERT: The Oregon Caves Chateau will be closed for rehabilitation throughout 2019 and 2020. Cave tours are still available late March through early November. The Oregon Caves is a place of adventure, wonder, and discovery. Join your guide and a small party of fellow cave explorers for a 90-minute tour. The route wends through narrow, twisting passages with ceilings as low as 45 inches! See strangely beautiful of stalactites, stalagmites, and other mysterious calcite flowstones. The route is moderately strenuous and not recommended for people with breathing, heart, knee or back issues. Children must be 42” tall or taller, no exceptions. The cave is 44 degrees year round. Tours are popular in the summer. Arrive early to avoid long waits or closures. Reservations are available at Recreation.gov. Cave tours offered late March to early November. There are a few wonderful trails to explore on the surface.See more..
The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument comprises three geographical separate units - The Sheeprock unit has the monument Visitor Center and the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center (with a working fossil research lab). The Painted Hills unit is the most popular due to the colorfully striped hills. The Clarno unit appears to be the smallest unit. All three units have nice hiking trails with colorful rock formations. The Blue Basin Trail is the longest (and the most strenuous) hike. The Picture Gorge scenic drive in the Sheeprock unit should not be missed. I spent two days visiting the three units while staying overnight in Mitchell. The National Monument is absolutely enjoyable though the three units are not contiguous therefore requiring some driving effort. But the rewards are worth the effort.See more..

Painted Hills is one of the most amazing places we've ever seen and it feels like you're in a different world when you're here. The natural landscapes are breathtakingly beautiful and it's an absolute joy to explore this area. We visited during a heat wave in 2017 and it was 115 degrees in the area, but that didn't stop us from enjoying every minute here. I recommend bringing plenty of water and make sure that your car has a full tank of gas, just because it's remote and a desert. I highly, highly recommend Painted Hills and it's still one of the most amazing placed we've ever visited!See more..
This should be your first stop for several reasons, First to get info on activities and advice for seeing the park. As importantly, to be aware of any advisories. This time of year that seemed particularly important considering many trails and observation areas are closed, restricted or treacherous. The staff was friendly and extremely helpful, answering all questions as thoroughly and clearly as possible. In addition there are souvenirs as well as books.See more..
Beautiful rock formations and colours. Unfortunately, the day we were there the visitor/palaeontology centre was closed due to unforseen circumstances, according to the sign on the door, so the Cant Ranch House was too, much to our disappointment. However, we still spent around 3 hours here and did 4 out of 5 of the available short hikes, which are all within about 5 miles of each other. We were keen to do the 3.25 mile Blue Basin trail too but as it was 107 degrees we just couldn't face it - there is pretty much no shade anywhere! Take plenty of water. There are toilets but no other facilities, although there is a place to refill water bottles outside the visitor centre. It would be possible to combine your time here with the Painted Hills area, about a 45 min drive further on, depending on your stamina and rhe heat as there are 5 more short walks there. We decided to visit over two days and I've reviewed Painted Hills unit separately.See more..
We had such a wonderful time hiking and exploring in this national forest. It was so lush and green that we could not help ourselves....we kept stopping to take so many pictures. Plus, it was not crowded at all and it all was very serene. We were so glad we also made it out to Spouting Horn to catch the "ocean geyser" and take fantastic pictures. LOVED this stop as part of our Oregon explorations!See more..
You'll need about 3 days to see all that this place has to offer. Wildlife, volcanic craters, history, dust storms, and lots of cows. Great place for birding when there is water. Unfornuately, it was drought conditions this month, so we didn't see many birds.See more..
The Clarno Unit of John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is worth a stop if you have an hour or so to go on the steep, short but scenic Arch Trail. The neck-craning view of the Arch at the end of the trail is the pay off. But, the rest of the hike is also enjoyable from the scenic view of the hills. The Trail of Fossils is also nice but rocky; a leaf fossil is the highlight of this trail. Clarno Unit is certainly worth a stop in the National Monument.See more..
