  2. 4.0 Blue Whale of Catoosa (481 reviews)
    - Interesting and Unusual
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Blue Whale of Catoosa image
This is an interesting place to stop. I would recommend it if you are traveling on Rte. 66 (although not worth making a special trip to go out of the way). There is a picnic area and a small trail. The whale itself has two places where there are two floors. To get to the upper floors, there are ladders, so that part is not handicap accessible. At the tail of the whale, the upper floor has no safety railings, so it is not a place to mess around. Swimming is not allowed, but since the whale has slides to the water, I assume at one point, swimming was allowed. See more..
  3. 4.0 Center Of The Universe (474 reviews)
    - My most searched review
Monday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Center Of The Universe image
Out of over 500 reviews, The Center of the Universe in Tulsa, OK is by far my most seen review. Now that it has been predominantly featured in the Paramount plus TV show, The Tulsa King staring Sylvester Stallone, I felt like it was time to revisit the landmark. Located in the heart of downtown Tulsa, it remains a mystery of the best kind. People travel from all over to see and experience what the feeling is all about. Everyone has their own opinions, so come check it out for yourself and see what the fuss is about. See more..
  4. 4.0 The Holy City (315 reviews)
    - A must see location at the Refuge
Monday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Points of Interest & Landmarks
    The Holy City image
This is a large area with lots of buildings and things to see. One should plan on at least an hour to get around and enjoy the buildings, the views, and more. We spent about three hours looking at everything and got some very nice pictures of Holy City and of the surrounding mountains. There were a lot of people at Holy City the day we were there and it was much appreciated that people followed social distancing and wearing masks. The gentleman in the gift shop (Paul maybe) was very informative with information to people asking questions. The gift shop is nice, but not a lot to choose from. There is a re-enactment of some sort on Easter morning and maybe someday we'll take the opportunity to see this. We hear there are many, many people who attend this so we'll see. Very enjoyable time! 5. 5.0 The Cave House (259 reviews)
    - Intriguing slice of Tulsa history!
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    The Cave House image
The Cave House in a landmark in Tulsa. It was built in 1924, as a Chicken Restaurant. Built during prohibition, it was a place you could quench your thirst! It not only has quirky architecture, but it probably best known for its stories, full of interesting and sometimes amusing information. It is a great date, or family adventure, and as the owner I love to share it! It is best to call, or message ahead, as I do not have regular hours. Due to scheduling for private tours and groups, and because travelers request all days and times, I try to schedule according to requests as best as I can. The cost is $15.00 and kids under 13 years are $7.50 See more..

  9. 4.0 World's Largest Totem Pole (52 reviews)
    - Worth the stop!
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    World's Largest Totem Pole image
It was a fun stop a few miles off of the route! The totem poles are really massive when you see them in person. The pictures do not give them justice. It was a very peaceful stop, and we even had the chance to go into the museum that was on site. This gentleman was a very interesting/multi-talented guy, and they had some of his work on display. My favorite was his collection of instruments that he had carved. So cool! See more..

  14. 4.0 Dinosaur Quarry (23 reviews)
    - On Google maps search for "dinosaur tracks". It will take your right not it.
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Dinosaur Quarry image
How cool is this?! Actual dinosaur tracks in the middle of nowhere. No signs or anything to mark them makes it even better because it's almost like a treasure hunt. My husband, 4-year-old, 15-year-old and I visited the dinosaur tracks. I ended up finding it on google maps on my iPhone, which made them pretty easy to find. You have to search a little bit once you get out of your vehicle and walk to the area. You need to walk a bit to the left and they are pretty easy to spot. There was one other person exploring when we were searching. At first, we walked the wrong way, and apparently, he did too because he said, "Oh, there they are." We had so much fun exploring this area. A nice little day adventure for us. See more..

    - Internet Find gone Right
Spent More than 3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Sipokni West image
We came across Sipokni West on the Internet while I was looking for something to do. What can be more fun than a manufactured old west town? Admittedly, we were a little hesitant once we got there. It looked a little iffy from the outside, but we overcame, cowboyed up and went inside. So glad we did! We got there at lunch stopped into The Lost Spur. The food was really good. Made to order. We got to meet Mrs. Shackleford, the owners wife, and our server. She is so high energy and loving. Made us feel like family. The self guided tour was low key but fun. You have to remember, this is a movie set, so some of the buildings aren't much. We then met and had a great conversation with the owner, Mr Shackleford, with whom I wish we had gotten more time. We will come back again, after the weather is warmer to see the gunfights! 20. 4.5 Lucille's Historic HIghway Gas Station (16 reviews)
    - Photogenic 66 Landmark
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
Lucille's Historic HIghway Gas Station image
I'm a longtime fan of Route 66 and have driven the Mother Road 4 times coast to coast. Lucille's gas station is one of the icons that has been lovingly restored and cared for, even though the station's namesake has sadly passed away. You can't get gas here and it offers no services, but it's located right off the main highway with plenty of parking and amazing photo ops. The little white service station, built in the 1930s, is one of only two upper-story porch style stations left on Oklahoma's stretch of Route 66! It was built with the owner's living area above the station and has a delightful American Craftsman style architecture. The vintage gas pumps remain, and there's a nifty historical marker with more information about the building. Lucille's was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in the late 90s. Worth a stop, and bring your camera! See more..

This Route 66 sight is at the corner of 6th and Rte 66 by Chelsea Family Pharmacy next to the Route 66 sign with directional arrows to different cities. Park, get out, and descend the steps into the pedestrian underpass beneath the street. There are art murals of Oklahoma’s first noncommercial oil well and other Oklahoma historical sites on one side and room for you to leave your mark with a Sharpie or such on other walls. Worth the quick stop. See more..

    Bowling Ball Yard Art image
Chris Barber admitted to me that he had to rememove a few of the “art” pieces because he can no longer keep up with maintenance (health). Fear not: there are still a dozen or so, including an American flag of perhaps 100 balls, daisies whose petals are pins, bird feeders, and characters whose heads are balls. 25. 4.0 Route 66 Ribbon Road/Sidewalk Highway Landmark (11 reviews)
    - Essential stop on any Route 66 roadtrip
Monday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
Route 66 Ribbon Road/Sidewalk Highway Landmark image
When Route 66 was created in 1926, it was initially cobbled together from existing roads, including this 9-foot-wide stretch built in 1921. What a cool experience to drive on a road that old! A lot of it is covered with gravel, but there are spots where you can make it out. Note that some Route 66 guidebooks and websites call this the "Miami Nine Foot Section" and some list this as in Narcissa rather than Miami (it's actually between the two). If you enjoy this, there's another stretch of 9-foot ribbon road, built in 1922, a bit south, near Afton OK. See more..

    Phillips 66 Filling Station image
Since our last visit in 2017 the station has changed quite a bit as it has been for sale now since 2019 according to an article I read. The old vehicles are now gone and the entire place may fall back into history if someone doesn't buy it. Sad to see the difference. Attached are two photos showing the present from the recent past, just 4 years ago when the old vehicles were parked in front. See more..

  34. 4.0 Wheelock Academy (6 reviews)
    - History is waiting for you to see.
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Wheelock Academy image
Who has heard of Wheelock Academy, much less know where Millerton, Oklahoma is? I didn't until we visited Beaver's Bend and saw the sign for Wheelock. Wheelock Academy is a female boarding school founded in 1832 by the Choctaws who were removed to Oklahoma via the Trail of Tears. There are surviving buildings from the original academy. In the most recently built part of the academy, there are many, many pictures of the former residents of the academy. Seeing the life of these girls and reading the letters from family, requesting admission of their children brought tears to my eyes. The last Native American girls were moved in 1955. Since 1993, Wheelock has appeared on the list of Oklahoma's Most Endangered Historic properties. In 2000, the Academy was lised as one of America's Eleven most endangered historic places. See more..

    Boise City Bomb Memorial image
Others could probably care less, but if you're into history, especially that of the WWII era, this is right up your alley. Boise City was the only community in the U.S. to be bombed by bombers in WWII. B-17 pilots on a training run mistook their target and dropped a half-dozen dud bombs on the town. Luckily no one was hurt, but there was damage. This monument has a replica bomb and a plaque giving details. Neat little piece of history. See more..

    Younger's Bend image
If you enjoy visiting grave sites of famous people this is cool. It's on private property and easiest to locate using the gps coordinates. There is a very nice sign and historical marker at the trailhead. The trail is less than 100 yards but you might wonder when it will end since it is on a wooded path that goes up and down rolling hills. It's a nice walk. It tells you to enter at your own risk so stay on the path. If you are facing the grave from the trail, the house appears to have been on the left hand side where there are old stones. You can see where the Canadian river once ran through the property before the Dam was built. Fun quick trip. Not too many people can say they have been here. See more..

After attending the Sac and Fox agency school and Haskell Indian Junior College in Lawrence, Kansas, he transferred to Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania. At Carlisle he led the football team to victories over some of the nation's best college teams—the Army, Navy, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Pennsylvania, and Nebraska. In 1912 he participated in the Olympic Games in Stockholm, winning gold medals in both the decathlon and pentathlon. It was then that King Gustav V of Sweden dubbed him "the world's greatest athlete." This is off the website and there is only a Monument left where the house Jim Thorpe was born in was located at.. If you enjoy planning your road trips away from interstate roads and around quaint little towns, Tonkawa fits the bill. Besides the Heart in the Park, there are grainery buildings and historic railroad car, etc. My mini road trip this weekend, for example, started N of OKC on I-35 with my first stop in Tonkawa. I took time to walk around downtown and see the Heart in the Park. Then I continued on to Pawhuska and dined at the Pioneer Woman Mercantile and walked across the Swinging Bridge.
