Route 66 Ribbon Road/Sidewalk Highway Landmark, Oklahoma, United States

Essential stop on any Route 66 roadtrip

When Route 66 was created in 1926, it was initially cobbled together from existing roads, including this 9-foot-wide stretch built in 1921. What a cool experience to drive on a road that old! A lot of it is covered with gravel, but there are spots where you can make it out. Note that some Route 66 guidebooks and websites call this the "Miami Nine Foot Section" and some list this as in Narcissa rather than Miami (it's actually between the two). If you enjoy this, there's another stretch of 9-foot ribbon road, built in 1922, a bit south, near Afton OK.

    Be careful of the location
Be careful of the location. I followed directions from Atlas Obscura and ended up in the wrong place. This is right off of U.S. 69 at 140th Road. If you're following 69 (old route 66), there's no reason not to stop. I read the sign and drove for about a quarter mile on the old road. It is fun to see what is essentially half a pave road, surrounded by gravel.
