The London House: Site of Woody Guthrie's Boyhood Home, Oklahoma, United States

Humble Beginnings

Not much to see here other than a carved tree monument and some foundation rocks. Still, wandering around this quiet lot for a few minutes will create a lasting memory. I first learned about this location years ago when Billy Bragg sussed it out in his documentary "Man in the Sand." The film is well worth watching prior to your visit.

    Cool tree carving
The home site for Woody Guthrie when he was a child growing up in Okemah. Tad overgrown but someone carved the neatest old tree - worth visiting. One block west of the highway into town

Exciting that I found the spot!
Randomly clicked on things to do while driving by Okemah. I'm so glad I did. There were no clear directions to his home spot so I drove around for awhile. There isn't even a trail to the tree or foundation rocks. Made me sad because there isn't even a metal sign that tells the story or parking. But I stepped into the waist high grass and went the 20 steps or so to tree. I felt his presence there more than I did at the small memorial in the old downtown. That is cool in a different way. It is between 2nd and 3rd off of Woody Guthrie Rd. It is the next block up from the house with the carved guitar I show in the last photo.
