Lucille's Historic HIghway Gas Station, Oklahoma, United States
4.5 (16 reviews) Spent < 1 hour Ranking #1 in Hydro Points of Interest & Landmarks
Photogenic 66 Landmark
I'm a longtime fan of Route 66 and have driven the Mother Road 4 times coast to coast. Lucille's gas station is one of the icons that has been lovingly restored and cared for, even though the station's namesake has sadly passed away. You can't get gas here and it offers no services, but it's located right off the main highway with plenty of parking and amazing photo ops. The little white service station, built in the 1930s, is one of only two upper-story porch style stations left on Oklahoma's stretch of Route 66! It was built with the owner's living area above the station and has a delightful American Craftsman style architecture. The vintage gas pumps remain, and there's a nifty historical marker with more information about the building. Lucille's was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in the late 90s. Worth a stop, and bring your camera!

What Your Kids will Learn on the Brief Stop Here
While you can only really stop here briefly, you can not stay here an hour. 1. The kindness of Lucille "Mother of the Mother Road" (and how they should mirror it in their lives) 2. How small a store could be back then 3. The small living quarters above the store. 4. The small motel rooms "before" Holiday Inn. 5. How a trip further west will lead to the diner named after Lucille (which has great food).

Fun brief stop on the mother road
Route 66 history. As it goes, Lucille lived here and would come down and visit with all who stopped and tell the tales of the mother road.. it is very cool to see and invision the old gas station and shop where travelers would stop. No one was around when I was there, not sure there is any more. But, there is plenty to see, even if it's briefly. It's a must if you are traveling the mother road....
