4.5Black Mesa Summit Trail(52 reviews) - Always wanted to hike Oklahoma's highest point Hiking Trails
Meredith Aug 2020 gives a thorough review, but I would add March is a good time of year to go if weather cooperates. No snakes! My husband and I are 60 and moderately active. I found the incline to be taxing, but doable. Views are reminiscent of Santa Fe area. We started at 9 and it took us 3.5 hours to complete hike. We only met 4 other hikers while on the trail; all women hiking solo.See more..
4.0Lake Wister State Park(38 reviews) - Quiet Rustic Getaway Spent More than 3 hours State Parks • Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails
Peaceful beautiful surroundings that offer a great getaway in a simple rustic cabin over looking the lake. Pet friendly. Be prepared to furnish your own cookware and dinner placements if you decide to use the stove, microwave, coffeemaker, or toaster. We had to make a quick run to Dollar General for mugs.See more..

3.5Santa Fe Trail(6 reviews) - Not a lot to see except open space Spent < 1 hour Hiking Trails
The branch of the Santa Fe Trail that crosses Cimarron County is an old remnant, of course, and grasses have overtaken the trail, erosion softened the ruts, so actually it's easier to see on Google Earth. Still, if you can manage a visit to Signature Rock on private land, but protected by the National Park Service, that is an extra treat. It is along a spring on the trail with a sandstone bluff where travelers on the trail engraved memorials to those who perished on the journey. Very inspiring. See more..
Claremore is a well-rounded trail system for a range of skill levels. Want to go for a quick, smooth loop through the woods, or challenge yourself with some more technical terrain and a bit longer distance? Wanna try your newfound confidence on some jumps/drops? This is a great trail system that has a lot to offer, all while being close for those that live in nearby cities. Great views of the lake and less "traffic" than other surrounding trail systems.See more..

2.5Sportsman Lake(2 reviews) - Quiet Lake with Fishing, Swimming and Camping Sunday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails This is a nice little lake with equestrian trails, hiking, swimming, fishing and camping. A very nice swim beach is was very sandy and well marked. There are fishing docks and a fishing bridge for bank fishing. No Jet Skis, Skiing or Tubing allowed, just a small fishing lake. Very quiet. We stayed two nights for $15.00 per night, so a good price as well. The bathrooms were not clean and the showers were not working, but we stay in an RV so we didn't need them. Can make reservations by calling the ranger, will need to text him however as he doesn't answer his phone.See more..

The McGee Creek Natural Scenic Recreation Area is a wilderness area adjacent to and northeast of the McGee Creek State Park. It has a few hiking trails and is great for hiking and bird watching. To get to the parking lot, head East on OK-3 from Atoka towards Antlers. Drive past the signs for the state park and turn North on Centerpoint Road. Follow Centerpoint for about 11 miles past the ranger station until you arrive at the parking lot. There are a couple of trails leaving from the parking lot including a relatively short loop trail (about 1 mile) called the Carnesaw Nature Trail, as well as a few longer options. We opted for a longer trail and had quite an adventure as shown below. The Little Bugaboo, South rim, North Rim, and Wildcat Loop is listed at about 11 miles and has quite a bit of up and down. It's a very nice trail...very diverse scenery, some ups and downs, lots of tree cover for most of the route, but also some large grassy areas with tall grass. We hiked the route counterclockwise...and in hindsight, I would recommend this direction. Much of the trail was somewhat overgrown, and there was some poison ivy, but the trail was pretty well marked with big yellow signs at most of the junctions and markings on the trees if you look for them. There are also some really big cairns to help you through the grassy areas. I definitely recommend this trail. It's one of the nicer trails in Oklahoma. A couple of important points:.First, we measured the route using GPS and it is only about 9 miles (including the Carnasaw Nature Trail). Second definitely wear long pants as the tall grass will give your legs a beating. Third, be careful on the Wildcat Trail as about 1.5 miles after turning off of the North Rim Trail, there are no signs indicating where the trail turns south to go through the grassy areas. If you're not careful, you might end up following one of the offshoot trails down to the lake. A trail map is very helpful.See more..
