    Marland's Grand Home image
I’m glad we visited the Marland Grand Home the day AFTER touring the Mansion. This was the Marlands real home where they lived the longest and it feels welcoming. It’s a warm, beautiful and inviting house unlike the somewhat austere and showy mansion. The self guided tour here is very well done with excellent signage and many original artifacts. We spent a little over an hour touring the house and walking around the yard. This gracious home is well worth the time if you enjoy fascinating history and exquisite period homes. Highly recommend. 17. 4.5 Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center (60 reviews)
    - One room schoolhouse is great
    History Museums
Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center image
We did this as a field trip with our homeschool co-op. The one room schoolhouse was in the morning & the kids really enjoyed writing with ink & nib pens, reading from a McGuffy reader & writing on slates. They had a quick tour of the museum, saw the land run office & store, and a “mansion” (upper class house but smaller than today’s mansions for sure!). I want to come back with my teenagers when the study OK History. The guides and movie talked frankly about the Trail of Tears and Indian tribes that make up an important part of OK history as well as the land run, settlement on the prairie, and wheat & oil. Dr. Mathearn was fantastic at teaching the kids- made it interesting & still was in character. Highly recommend for schools & families (though it might not be as interesting if you didn’t do the whole one-room schoolhouse experience). See more..

I was looking for historical books on Guthrie and was told to go to the museum. Not only was it east to find, easy to park and beautiful to boot, the woman working there on 6/25/22 was very helpful. We talked for awhile as I was looking for a book. She ended up giving me a second book about Elmer McCuardy for free as "you might need a second book for your long trip." The book is fabulous by the way! See more..

We visited on a rainy Monday and were greeted by a friendly and knowledgeable docent. The exhibit walks you through the 1921 Race Massacre in an immersive and very moving way. Hearing the actual survivors recall that terrifying night was the most powerful part of the exhibit for me. Be sure to have a seat in the barbers chair and listen to the barbers talk to each other. I had done some quick visits to the museum at some points, but really began to find it’s value in 2018 when I needed information when compiling an abstract on title to land in El Reno that was once crossed by railroads I went to the museum. The staff was very helpful and were able to pull out old railroad maps that showed the location of the abandoned lines. I was able to include in the abstract to help the examiner and others trying to read the difficult descriptions contained in railroad deeds. (they use “engineer points” not survey points like general land descriptions.) I’m now fully retired and hope to go back and find info or photos on relatives that lived in El Reno, including my great grandfather that was sexton of the cemetery for 16 years beginning in 1909. My grandmother was born there in 1904, before statehood. I may find lots of interesting things. See more..

The statue of Standing Bear was pretty neat. You have to walk a paved trail to get there. The museum had several small rooms with different art for each tribe. One room told the story of Standing Bear and how he went to court to obtain rights for Indians who were not considered people. It was a touching story. The curator there took time to talk to us about Indian culture, which we were a little about. She was very helpful and answered all of our questions. It gave us a greater understanding of what native Americans have been through and what they are going through today. I’m glad we stopped in. The museum was free and took about an hour. See more..

This museum packs a big selection in a small looking exterior. Once inside, it is much vaster than the outside leads you to believe. The upper story has a collection of things discovered locally and information about the wagon road in Oklahoma. There are many items that show the progression of technology in household appliances. A collection of bicycle styles is quite interesting. The lower story contains the largest buggy collection in Oklahoma. Many pristine examples show the changes as time and economical status progressed. The car collection is also very interesting. If you are lucky enough to strike up a conversation with the curator, take advantage of it. It’s tempting to pass this up even though it is right next door to the majestic Chickasaw Courthouse. It has - inside - the original Council House (us pale-faces call it a courthouse). Yes the actual, real, original log Council House. Originally it was over in now Milburn where the Chickasaw White House is. Emma was our guide. She is amazing. She is not only elegant and knowledgeable but very humbled by her Chickasaw heritage. I learned more from her than anyone else concerning the early day Chickasaws. She even knew the burial customs. I had asked this question at the other various Chickasaw places I visited and received conflicting information. Buy your souvenirs here. I did. Best selection and moderately priced. Thank you my new ehoo Indian friend Ima aka Emma. See more..

This is an easy stop off of I-35, but don't miss the town of Perry as well. We had lunch in town and then explored the museum. Great place for an outdoor stretch break, you could picnic there while watching the stream trip over rocks and slip under a small walking bridge. Take in the outdoor exhibits - school house and equipment shed. Some playground equipment that would have been on my playground decades ago! The museum is clean, well cared for and offers good history lessons for all ages. See more..

Docent Riley did an excellent job telling us about the Nations history and the restoration of the home. Governor Johnston and his family lived there. The home has many original furniture pieces. All beautiful. See more..

It's worth the stop just to see the life size longhorn statues in front of the museum. This place is huge. It is in an old building that is 3 stories tall. The elevator and a/c were broken when we were there so we got quite a workout. There were numerous rooms filled with exhibits. The museum covers Greer County, probably the most unusual county in Oklahoma since at one time it was part of Texas. A friendly gentleman showed us all around. See more..
