  2. 4.5 Centennial Land Run Monument (554 reviews)
    - History Frozen In Time
    Monuments & Statues
    Centennial Land Run Monument image
The Oklahoma Land Run Monument contains one of the world’s largest collection of bronze statues depicting optimistic homesteaders frozen in time on their way to claim a better life on the April 22, 1889 land run. The 45 pieces were sculpted over a 20 year period and are the work of Norman artist, Paul Moore. The intricate works of art are beautifully crafted & detailed. The pieces capture the essence of the historic event. It’s a nice tribute to those people that had the courage to take a chance to wildly race to stake their claim for a new life. Well done See more..

    - Well Cared For Statue

    The Golden Driller image
This iconic Rt 66ish stop has to be one of the better stops. It is in Tulsa at the Expo Center. We were the only ones here when we visited, but it is one of those things that you get your photos and move on. The statue gets good care and it shows. It stands about 76 feet tall and should withstand 200mph tornado winds. There is parking right in front of the Expo Center where the statue is, so it is easy in and easy out. Thanks, Tulsa, for a fun stop and for keeping the Golden Driller looking good! See more..

    Bowling Ball Yard Art image
Chris Barber admitted to me that he had to rememove a few of the “art” pieces because he can no longer keep up with maintenance (health). Fear not: there are still a dozen or so, including an American flag of perhaps 100 balls, daisies whose petals are pins, bird feeders, and characters whose heads are balls. Your car will be dirty, but your heart will be full See more..

    Boise City Bomb Memorial image
Others could probably care less, but if you're into history, especially that of the WWII era, this is right up your alley. Boise City was the only community in the U.S. to be bombed by bombers in WWII. B-17 pilots on a training run mistook their target and dropped a half-dozen dud bombs on the town. Luckily no one was hurt, but there was damage. This monument has a replica bomb and a plaque giving details. Neat little piece of history. See more..

    Heart in the Park image
If you enjoy planning your road trips away from interstate roads and around quaint little towns, Tonkawa fits the bill. Besides the Heart in the Park, there are grainery buildings and historic railroad car, etc. My mini road trip this weekend, for example, started N of OKC on I-35 with my first stop in Tonkawa. I took time to walk around downtown and see the Heart in the Park. Then I continued on to Pawhuska and dined at the Pioneer Woman Mercantile and walked across the Swinging Bridge. My last stop was Woolaroc Museum & Wildlife Preserve (Bartlesville). So much fun! I would definitely do this ALL again. See more..

    Jim Thorpe Birthplace image
Born in 1888 in Oklahoma Territory, Jim Thorpe was a Sac and Fox Indian. After attending the Sac and Fox agency school and Haskell Indian Junior College in Lawrence, Kansas, he transferred to Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania. At Carlisle he led the football team to victories over some of the nation's best college teams—the Army, Navy, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Pennsylvania, and Nebraska. In 1912 he participated in the Olympic Games in Stockholm, winning gold medals in both the decathlon and pentathlon. It was then that King Gustav V of Sweden dubbed him "the world's greatest athlete." This is off the website and there is only a Monument left where the house Jim Thorpe was born in was located at.. OnCue Dog Park image
The dog park is really clean, even though people don't usually pick up after their own pet. We have a rescue and go by there often with a load of dogs. It's the perfect place to get out and burn off a little energy (for us and the dogs). Yesterday when we stopped, one of the pups nipped me. I went in the store to get a band aid and the wonderful woman behind the counter insisted on buying us a little 1st aid kit for the van. And the coffee is good also ;) See more..

Lovely 15 foot granite tribute to the cowboys that settled the Cherokee Strip along the Cimarron River. The citizens of Freedom dedicated the memorial in 1950. The rock is chiseled with depictions of western scenes along with the names of those cowboys that contributed to settling the area. Great little stop if you’re nearby. - Beautiful Honor Monument

    Twistex image
Oklahoma has some of the strangest and often deadliest weather anywhere...I recently stopped by the memorial when I was in El Reno to the three storm researchers that passed away chasing the May 31, 2013 tornado. At one time the storm was 2.6 miles wide. These brave men died trying to gather valuable knowledge to help save the lives of others ♥️ I thought the memorial was a very nice tribute to keep their memory alive. People still visit and leave trinkets & coins in Thor honor. Exit 127 off I-40 then travel southbound on Radio Road about a mile and turn left, granite monument sits on the north side of Reuter Road near a field. See more..
