A beautiful, well kept building. Get there before 4:30 pm or be too late for the tour. There are displays & plaques outside, on the grounds with historical information. Quite interesting.

Beautiful and Stately Original Chickasaw Capital Building, from 1898
This grand old building sits on a small hill overlooking the town of Tishomingo. The building was built in 1898 and served as the Chickasaw Capital until 1906, shortly before Oklahoma Statehood. After statehood, the federal government confiscated from the Native American Tribes all government buildings and ceded them to the State. From 1907 until 1992 the building served as the Johnston County Courthouse. Thereafter the tribe repurchased the building from the County. Several years were spent restoring and refurbishing the building. It was returned to its original condition. Other buildings on the the capital grounds such as the county jail and some other outbuildings were demolished. The tribe then beautifully landscaped the grounds and added historical markers and statues. The building also houses a nice museum that tells about the Chickasaw Nation and her people. There is also a small gift shop in the capital building. It really is a must see for all those interested in the history of the Chickasaw Nation, and the history of Oklahoma. The building holds special significance to me in that I worked there as prosecutor for Johnston County for about 10 years. I spent thousands of hours in that building. It's nice to see it restored to its original condition.

Beautiful Restored Building & History Lesson
We do genealogy as a hobby. Sent into Ancestry for DNA test kit. Got the results and found my family line is part Chickasaw & Choctaw. I used to do some historical building restoration work during my working career. So a combination of these made this a must stop on our way north. The restoration work is beautifully done. The staff in both the Capital building and the Museum were very friendly and helpful. We will be back. We want to spend more time exploring the area.
