Stafford Air & Space Museum image
The Stafford Air & Space Museum is a Smithsonian-affiliated institution. We are named in honor of Lt. General Thomas P. Stafford, veteran astronaut of the Project Gemini & Apollo space programs and a Weatherford, OK native. Filled with artifacts from the earliest days of mankind’s first flights, to the manned spaceflight programs of the “Space Race” era between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, to the future of aerospace, the Museum has something for everyone! The museum houses 63,000 square feet of exhibits and showcases thousands of artifacts, including a General Dynamics F-16 “Fighting Falcon,” the actual Fixed-Base Simulator used to train all 135 Shuttle Program crews, a ten-story Titan II rocket, a moon rock returned to Earth by the crew of Apollo 17 and General Stafford’s actual, flown Gemini VI spacecraft. You’ll be amazed at the history you can find under one roof. Open 7 days a week/360 days a year. Closed on New Year's Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve & Day. See more..

  4. 4.5 Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum (136 reviews)
    - Easy to spend the whole day
Military Museums • Military Bases & Facilities
Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum image
To visit here, you need to first go to the Fort Sill visitor center with your ID to get a day pass. Apparently there’s a golf course and bowling alley because people were coming to play there. The museums are free, and there’s 2 museum areas. My kids loved seeing how there is an entire city inside those guarded walls. There’s a Pizza Hut, Burger King, basketball court, gas station, etc. Behind the buildings opposite the gift shop (which wasn’t open), there’s a nice playground. There’s a large lawn for playing/relaxing. We could have spent the entire day. See more..
  5. 4.5 U.S. Army Artillery Museum (63 reviews)

    U.S. Army Artillery Museum image
Excellent presentation of Artillery's historical development. Detailed explanation of each exhibit (w/o being overwhelming). Balanced mix of equipment, the people who made significant contributions, and significant events. Well worth 1-3 hours. See more..
  6. 4.0 Osage County Historical Museum (22 reviews)
    - Very well done......
Sunday: 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM Military Museums • Historic Sites • History Museums
    Osage County Historical Museum image
This museum is relatively small, but very well done. So much history and much of it from the last 100 years, so everyone can relate to some of it. Staff was very friendly and informative, but gave time for us to browse at our leisure. They did an excellent job with the local history. Plan to spend a couple of hours here to get the full experience. See more..
  7. 5.0 General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum (8 reviews)
    - This incredible museum is free
    Spent 1-2 hours Military Museums
General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum image
The museum looks very new and clean. It was free. A veteran met us at the door and told us a lot of information. He showed us where to start the museum tour and told us he’d meet us afterwards to answer questions. It was very interesting. It covered his entire life, through his schooling, failing college, joining the army, eventually going to OCS. He served in Vietnam, Desert Storm and was the U.S. Coalition commander in the first years of the War on Terror. He retired in 2003. They had all of his medals, uniforms and the multitude of gifts other nations gave and bestowed on him. They had recently received a 3,000 pound “I” Beam from the World Trade Center. See more..
  8. 4.5 Okfuskee County Historical Society and Museum (4 reviews)
    - Dedicated Volunteers
Spent < 1 hour Military Museums • History Museums
Okfuskee County Historical Society and Museum image
This museum is as unassuming as Okemah itself. Like many local Historical Society museums, their collection consists of a wide array of donated items. Many are mundane (i.e. weathered basketball, creepy dolls,) but they also have a unique, albeit humble, section dedicated to Woody Guthrie. The highlight of which is a mock-up of Woody's boyhood home built out of its original wood planks. The staff were exceptionally friendly. Hours fluctuate, so call in advance to ensure they're open. 10. 4.5 Choctaw Veterans Memorial (2 reviews)
    - Nice Little Tribute to Those Who Served
    Military Museums
    Choctaw Veterans Memorial image
The Veterans Memorial at Choctaw pays tribute to those who served, including military retirees, former military, guardsmen, reservists, DoD civilians, and "those gone - but not forgotten." In addition to an entryway arch, there are four arches representing the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines, though the brochure also includes Coast Guard and DoD. There is a name wall of those who are being honored, a metal cut out of an infantry man on patrol, and benches to sit on. While I was there, there were also infantry boots decorate with flags, dogtags and flowers. Though it is a small memorial, it is well designed. Sadly, at my visit it seemed to be in need of some care and upkeep. Perhaps it would also be nicer at sunset or night time, assuming the lights are on. There are no facilities or services of any kind at this memorial. The memorial is wheelchair accessible. See more..
