Breathtaking View

We were staying at Wister State Park and went into Poteau for a few supplies. We made the trip up the winding road to the top. It had been raining on and off and the clouds against the blue sky were beautiful. No walking required. You can drive right up to the sign.

    Worlds highest hill
I live at the bottom of Cavanal Mountain which is actually a hill. a mountain needs to rise 2000 feet and Cavanal is about one foot short. The road is ruff but paved and very, very steep. There is a small picnic area at the top. The view is great and the view on the trip down is also very good. There are no restrooms at the top or any other facilities. There is a fall and a spring run-walk to the top (5 miles). If you travel to or through Poteau you really should drive up. Turn toward the mountain on Smith which changes name to Mockingbird then Witteville. It is all the same road which many decades ago was the train tracks to the coal mines. Be sure your brakes are in good condition for the trip down.

    On top of Cavanal
A great thing for those looking for the view of Potaeu from the highest hill in this world! There is a nice picnic table to add to a great highway rest, or evening adventure away from town. I found a brochure at my hotel on cavanal which went into detail on what distinguishes between a mountain and a hill -- the difference here is one foot. A hill becomes a mountain at 2000 feet -- Cavanal stands 1999, and has been distingued as the world tallest hill. The road up is steep and narrow at parts -- mostly residential at the bottom. Once on top enjoy the view, and picnic facility.
