3.5 (15 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Chelsea Points of Interest & Landmarks

Free, Fast, Fun, Historic Stop

This Route 66 sight is at the corner of 6th and Rte 66 by Chelsea Family Pharmacy next to the Route 66 sign with directional arrows to different cities. Park, get out, and descend the steps into the pedestrian underpass beneath the street. There are art murals of Oklahoma’s first noncommercial oil well and other Oklahoma historical sites on one side and room for you to leave your mark with a Sharpie or such on other walls. Worth the quick stop.

Get your kicks WALKING UNDER Route 66!
If you're driving down Route 66 in Chelsea Oklahoma, stop and WALK UNDER the Mother Road. The tunnel obviously dates back to a time when there was more traffic on the Mother Road and more people living in the town. Recently revitalized in 2016 by the town of Chelsea to make it a tourist destination and put their town on the map. A subterranean walkway with a mural of early local history & landmarks, painted by local artist Ken Hollingshead (with a little help from aspiring artist, Parker Stanbro) on one side and on the other, a wall encouraging visitors to autograph... SIGN OUR WALL! Park in the parking lot right at the entrance (it's a business lot). It's worth the 5 minute stop for a photo op, so take a break from the drive and sign the wall! Don't forget your Sharpie! DIRECTIONS: Follow I-44 E to OK-28 W in Mayes County. Take exit 269 from I-44 E and follow OK-28 W to Rte 66/Walnut St in Chelsea. It's under the street at the traffic signal at 6th street

    Nice, quick stop
Well.... it's interesting that they actually had walkways under Route 66 because in it's day, it was soooo busy. It was fun to see one. BUT..... you can no longer access them under the street. They are boarded up and taped off. And, from the looks of them this summer (2021) they have been that way for quite awhile. So, take the pictures and enjoy what once was, just know what every "wonderful" murals and paintings are down there are no longer able to be seen....
