Good museum and glad to have seen these works of this area of Maine.

Celebrating Maine's Role in American Art, the Farnsworth Art Museum offers a nationally recognized collection of works from many of America's greatest artists. With 20,000 square feet of gallery space and over 15,000 works in the collection, there is always something new on view at the Farnsworth. The museum has one of the largest collections of works by sculptor Louise Nevelson. Its Wyeth Center features works of Andrew, N.C. and Jamie Wyeth. The Farnsworth's library is also housed in its Rockland, ME, campus. Two historic buildings, the Farnsworth Homestead and the Olson House, and Julia's Gallery for Young Artists complete the museum complex.

    Go, see, enjoy.
My wife, an art student in her younger days, has always loved Andrew Wyeth. The father and other brother as well, but particularly Andrew. While she knew of his association with Maine, she was unaware of the exhibit at the Farnsworth, so when we game into town for a Windjammer Cruise and saw it she went a little fan-girl on me. We made plans to visit after our 4 day cruise, and we did on a Saturday. While my wife loves Wyeth, I can only say my appreciate for art is more limited, and I like what I like and dislike a great deal more. She was enamored of all the Wyeth works, especially the extra exhibits in the Church building, and even enjoyed the other artists works. Being less of a student I enjoyed some of the work a good deal less, although I appreciated all the Wyeth works, plus the gallery of 19th century works, and also Leonard Baskin's gallery. The bottom line of this is that if you are a lover of art this is clearly for you, but even if you're just a casual observer of art, you will still find more than enough to occupy your time here. So go, see, enjoy.

    Wyeth Exhibit
We needed a rainy day activity on our visit to Camden and the Farnsworth fit the bill. The tickets are now on line in advance with a timed entry slot - do not show up early as the staff are being strict about entry times. The whole museum has a great one way path laid out with 6' markers all over, so we felt safe. The Wyeth exhibit is really unbelievable, it is almost as if the artist painted his seascapes that morning and brought them over for display - they feel that current. The women in book cover design exhibit also struck me as an art medium that we don't even realize is a true art form, though not one that is currently practiced. Otherwise the emphasis on New England art and artists is truly special. This is a great rainy day destination and a nice place to escape for a couple hours.
