Cape Perpetua Scenic Area, Oregon, United States

Beautiful Park, nice trails

Great hikes and well marked trails. We spent the late afternoon here and hiked the discovery trail, very scenic through the forest area with glimpses of the ocean. It has a pretty good uphill climb until you get to the high point then it gradually comes back down. There are other trails that branch off and all signage clearly marks distance and direction. The visitor center had closed while we were on our hike (4pm), but had maps and other information if you visited when it was open. A sandwich board out front had some information on hours. The trails to the Devil’s Churn, Spouting Horn and Thor’s Well were very nicely paved and clearly marked. These trails had a few steps but were easy to hike.

Spectacular location despite the incredible winds!
Being photographers, this is a place that you must see. The coast line is very rough with spectacular features including spectacular waves and water spouts. We parked at the second parking lot which meant that we walked back about 1/4 mile, but there were many wonderful views along the way. Be prepared for the winds though. One person told us that the reason that it was called Cape Perpetua was the perpetual winds. That might not have been the reason, but the winds were significant.

    Great Viewing In The Rain
Spectacular vistas and the power of the ocean are the draws here. We did this on a REALLY bad weather day in February during a big winter storm, so if you are looking for something to do when the weather is really crappy, this is it. All three sites we visited are within a fifteen minute drive south of Yachats on Hwy 101. We were intending to walk down to Devil's Churn and Cook's Chasm/Thor's Well but the driving rain and hail was too nasty. Fortunately there are marked viewpoints right on the highway that provide good views of both. It also worth driving up to the top of the day use area at the park visitors centre where you get a fabulous view of the whole coast. A great way to kill a couple of hours. The blow holes and Devil's Churn are most active at high tide.
