These were some of the most beautiful homes in there day. It was so sad to see so many of them falling into disrepair. But many are still glorious and have been beautifully restored. No one can afford those big old houses anymore or I think many would he redone. Definitely worth driving around. See more..

I went here alone and hiked the trail behind the spring and viewed the little cave behind where the spring begins. I was impressed, it’s well kept. There were park rangers there if anyone had questions and the trail provided even more breathtaking views although it was steep and rocky in some places. See more..

    Jolly Mill Park image
Jolly Mill Park is a private park, costs $5 to enter per vehicle (honor system). There are many historical buildings. Most are only open during specific times, but you can wander around and look inside through the windows. haha We were lucky enough to be there on the first Saturday of the month when the historic grist mill was open and operating. The building dates to pre Civil War. The park is nicely landscaped right along Capps Creek. Very scenic. There is a clean restroom and plenty of parking. Pavilions are available and picnic tables. Two playgrounds and a large open field. There is an old iron bridge (Haskins bridge) on the edge of the property that is interesting to cross. Be careful of loose or missing boards. We enjoyed the day very much. It was very beautiful and peaceful. It is interesting to imagine life back in the days of the old settlers. See more..

Downtown Marceline is a step back in time. They call it the Original Main Street USA. You can really see the influence that Walt Disney took from this town. From the downtown cinema to the corner Cafe which was a great place to eat. The post office where you can send a post card with the Mickey Mouse post mark. The Disney museum with a number of train locomotives in the park. There is also a very nice Disney Museum. (They are not open on Mondays) We felt very welcomed and really enjoyed of time in town. Welcome to Smithville, MO: a town fiercely proud of its historic heritage and small-town feel, yet growing with the times and booming population. Smithville was founded in 1822 by Humphrey Smith, his wife Nancy, and their seven children. They settled along the Little Platte River and built the first water-powered flour mill in Clay county which drew a population that formed into Smithville proper in the 1830’s. In 1979, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began the creation of Smithville Lake. The lake boasts 7200 acres of coverage and 172 miles of shoreline, perfect for boating, fishing, and numerous other recreations while also providing the main water source to the city of Smithville. Since 1980s, Smithville’s population has quadrupled in size, but has never lost its small town heritage and feel. Our historic downtown is off the main highway, and while the Main Street District has maintained many of its historic buildings and facades, it has grown in size and business diversity as See more..
