Lost Canyon Nature Trail and Cave image
We did this tour right after it rained one morning so the weather was perfect it was overcast and cool. I believe you could have done it even in the rain because the cart you are on keeps you decently covered. Driving through the cave and getting a drink was a lot of fun. Overall it was a very neat experience with beautiful views we took lots of great photographs. At one point if you drive too close to a waterfall you will get a little wet. Adds to the Fun! Great for any age. See more..

Welcome to Katy Trail State Park, the longest developed rail-trail in the country. Whether you are a bicyclist, walker, equestrian, nature lover or history buff, the trail offers opportunities for recreation, a place to enjoy nature and an avenue to discover the past. The park, built on the former corridor of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (MKT or Katy), is 240 miles long and runs between Clinton and Machens with 26 trailheads and four fully restored railroad depots along the way. We parked in the free public lot at the Lewis & Clark Boat House in St. Charles at 1050 South Riverside Drive. Only a couple dozen cars were doing similar on the late June Saturday morning we visited; it seemed like the lot was large enough for a couple hundred cars. We exercise walked 10 miles along the trail by venturing out and back from the lot in both the upriver and down river directions. The trail was wide, flat, and nicely surfaced; easy for bike riding. We did not see any mile markers. See more..
  5. 4.5 Weldon Springs Clark Trail (25 reviews)
    - Real good exercise with a view.

    Weldon Springs Clark Trail image
I took the 5.3 mile route called the Clark Trail. You can also take the 8 mile route. I broke a sweat and had to breathe hard climbing some of the hills on the trail but I loved every minute of it. Took about 2.5 hours. The View off the Bluffs of the Missouri River was Awesome. Take a backpack and bring some Trail mix, or chocolate and bring some water. Take your trash out with you as it is primitive and no trash cans. Hit the bathroom in the gas station just before you get there as there is no toilet. Bring good fitting shoes that are broke in, this is a long walk. See more..

Worthwhile to visit this lovely and tragic park to learn about the sad exodus of the Native Americans from their homelands. Well documented visitor center does a great job of explaining the historical event. We did the quick hike to the overlook, though there are other 2-5 mile hikes available for full day adventures. We stumbled here while on a trip to another location. This spring is beautiful. It doesn't not say swimming but I saw other families there. It is about a 40? minute hike to get to the spring. Warning there is poison ivy along the trail. I wish we had brought out suits as after hiking to this location, I would have loved to cool off in the water. See more..

    Galloway Creek Nature Park image
A lovely park located a short distance from West Plains City Hall. Nice large parking area and public restroom (can be messy at times) available. Several trails to venture down with a nice view of the small creek. Park offers several picnic spots, and plenty of mown side areas for rest or play. A few benches are scattered along the front trails. There aren't many fences with exception of the one that separates the park from the railroad track, so caution is needed in some areas (especially for those with small children or animals). Since this is a nature park, it makes for excellent finds & exploration. A Missouri wildflower book and journal comes in quite handy. A beautiful spot. Highly recommended. See more..

Wife and I were in Cape for the weekend and I needed to get some miles in. found this trail and decided to give it a go. Started at the soccer fields and headed north since it has a slight incline that direction and since there was a brisk north wind that morning. that way I get to go downhill with the wind to my back on the return half. Trail is well kept and has decent markings. See more..

  16. 5.0 Katy Trail (4 reviews)
    - The perfect long distance trail
Spent 1-2 hours Biking Trails • Hiking Trails
This trail gives you the opportunity to ride for 230 miles across Missouri with mite we having to worry about traffic. It is an amazing journey through the heartland of America. The old railroad has been transformed into a crushed limestone trail that is beautifully maintained with good trail heads and amenities at the old rail road stations about every 12 miles. It is possible to ride just portions or the entire trail which we did in 6 days at about 40 miles a day staying in the small towns along the way. We went with an excellent outfitter, Wilderness Voyageurs, but it is also possible to do it on your own with a little planning . Hybrid bikes, not road bikes or mountain bikes, work well. 40 miles is more tiring on crushed limestone versus pavement, the preferred direction is west to east in part because of the prevailing winds which weren't bad. This is America at it's best!!! See more..
  17. 4.5 Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary (4 reviews)

Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary image
Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary is a privately funded endeavor open to the public. The exhibits in the Nature Center are interesting, especially the center piece which a variety of bird mounts. The several small gardens at the Nature Center are tended by volunteers. The main thing to enjoy here are the variety of trails. Several trails (on the south side) are paved and very enjoyable. The unpaved trails (on the northside) basically look like trails made a lawnmower running through the forest. Some of these trails had brush over growth and were also blockaded by spider webs. The Wornall Trail and Rush Creek Trail were the best. They had shade even in in the middle of the afternoon. So, visit Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary for an hour or two of communion with nature. Donations are accepted. See more..

My husband and I found this place on Google and decided to stay here because it has showers, bathrooms, electrical outlets, and large parking spaces on each campsite. It's kind of far into the woods so it's a little bit of a drive, but it has smooth roads. The owner, Steven is really nice. 10/10 would stay here again. See more..

Beautiful prairie loop and (adjacent) lake loop with paved trails and picturesque sunrise / sunset foregrounds. The two loops are linked together by a paved trail that passes under Henning Road. The prairie loop (to the east) is accessed via a long straight out-and-back from the car park. The lake loop (see attached map) proceeds west. I encountered very friendly patrons of the trails, with respectful dog walkers and a few runners. Total mileage for the prairie out-and-back loop and the lake loop was approximately 2.5 miles. I recently had the opportunity to visit Fort Leonard Wood. Nice looking facility. If you need to get outside and be moving while your there? Walk the Engineer Trail. It's not much over 2 miles long. In my opinion, it's a nice walk for everyone. They even have stations along the trail where you can do some leg stretches or pull up and what not. It's there and if your there, why not get out on the trail and walk it? See more..

  23. 5.0 McDonnell County Park (1 review)
    - Surpringly Large & Quiet Park
    Wednesday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Parks • Hiking Trails • Playgrounds
    McDonnell County Park image
My wife & I took a slow drive inside McDonnell Park about a month ago for familiarity (we're new to the area), and we were impressed by the remoteness & the green spaces & the well maintained facilities (2 playgrounds, two picnic shelters, other picnic tables & benches, public restrooms, and a meandering walking trail with fitness station stops). So we returned recently on a Sunday evening so I could get in my daily walk on as the temperatures cooled down. The loop trail is described as a figure 8, though it's the oddest shaped "8" I've ever encountered. But the occasionally hilly paved trail is maintained and passes through several wooded sections of the park with tall trees & central green spaces. With the exception of occasional muffled traffic noise from Adie Road north & southbound, my brisk walk was very peaceful. We will return to McDonnell Park for future walks & occasional picnics. It's easy to overlook, but worth seeking out. See more..

This is a refuge for waterfowl and during the winter some 400,000 geese and ducks are there. Fishing is allowed in the large ponds. There's a 1 mile loop trail through the swamp area with lots of cypress trees and an elevated lookout where deer can usually be seen. This is an excellent area for bird watching. No fee to enter and there's a small park station with a bathroom. See more..
  25. 5.0 Happy Rock Trail (1 review)
    - Short but lovely trail

    Happy Rock Trail image
Happy Rock Trail in Gladstone is a sweet trail for biking, hiking, walking and running. Confusingly, it is also signed as Shoal Creek Trail. The trail starts from the huge Happy Rock Park. Happy Rock Park is a community park consisting of Tennis courts, Dog parks, Softball/Baseball fields, Soccer fields, Children playgrounds, etc. There is also a charging station for electric cars. The trail mostly runs north from Happy Rock Park to the trailhead at Barry Road covering a gorgeous distance of a little over two miles. The loop around Happy Rock Park will add another mile or so. The trail is smoothly concrete paved and provides shade most of the time. Wildlife including birds are abundant. There is a branch trail that runs west next to the busy Highway 1; I did not find this section worthwhile while biking. Happy Rock Trail is a very enjoyable trail very popular with residents. 26. 5.0 Missouri Riverfront Trail (1 review)
    - Nice trail for a cloudy cool day
Spent 1-2 hours Biking Trails • Hiking Trails
    Missouri Riverfront Trail image
Missouri Riverfront Trail is a nice bike ride on a cool / cloudy day because no shade is available once one gets on the levy. There are several trailheads to access the trail. I used the one near Parkville, and the access path goes through the flood plains which could be flooded in rains. The trail on the levy is smooth nicely packed gravel and it is very maintained meticulously. It would be nice if mile markers were posted along the trail. At the Parkville trailhead there is about a half-mile side trail that is supposed to go to Riverside, but unfortunately it ends abruptly in less than half a mile. See more..
  27. 2.0 Blue Buck Knob Scenic Byway (1 review)
    - Not So Scenic

Blue Buck Knob Scenic Byway image
We'd been reading about this scenic drive for almost a year and finally drove it. What a let down it was! Many articles had rated it as one of the Top 10 drives in Missouri. There was nothing really scenic at the 2 scenic pull offs. The lake was closed and there was nothing much to see. Very disappointed. See more..
  28. 5.0 Fishing River Trail (1 review)
    - Beautiful Paved Trail
Biking Trails • Hiking Trails • Jogging Paths & Tracks
    Fishing River Trail image
Fishing River Trail in Kearney is an awesome trail for riding a bike or for walking, running. Perhaps because of the small town population, I did not see too many people on this about 4-mile long trail. The loop trail is paved all the way through with concrete or asphalt and is in very good condition. The trail traverses a variety of scenery including farmland, residential back yards, shady trees, and runs next to the Fishing River creek some pf the way. The only thing missing was trail signs anywhere along the trail or trail map. Distance markers posted on the pavement of the trail itself appeared to be from the nearby school athletic team. In spite of the missing trail info, Fishing River Trail is a beautiful trail. Look up the map on the internet before you go so that you are aware of some of the unmarked intersections with roads. 29. 5.0 Prairie Creek Greenway (1 review)
    - Nice bike trail but coul dbe better
Spent 1-2 hours Biking Trails • Parks • Hiking Trails
    Prairie Creek Greenway image
Prairie Creek Greenway Trail is a nice bike trail paved with asphalt. The two main trailheads are the North and South Trailheads. The map at the North trailhead was pretty faded from sunlight, and I took the path on the right side from the parking lot which took me into town after a long ride. It is the path on the path on the left that leads to the Greeenway trail. The about four mile long bike trail is quite beautiful. The loop includes about a mile along ride a major road, which I did not ride. But the rest of the ride through the wooded trail next to the creek was beautiful and enjoyable. I did not see any mile markers on the trail!. Prairie Creek Greenway Trail could be more enjoyable with better signage. See more..
  30. 5.0 Platte Landing Park (1 review)
    - Lovely Community Park for people and dogs
Biking Trails • Hiking Trails • Jogging Paths & Tracks
    Platte Landing Park image
Platte Landing Park in Parkville is a community park that provides a variety of avenues for beautiful outdoor exercise next to the great Missouri River. There is a pretty flat about 3 km long loop trail with hard packed fine gravel and is very popularly used for walking, running and bicycle riding. The trail provides great views of the river and forest trees. It could also be a good birding trail. The trail surrounds a large dog park which is heavily used. There is a picnic shelter at the trailhead. The park is adjacent to the small Sullivan Sanctuary (good for birding). This newer park adjoins the older English Landing Park. Platte Landing Park is a park is well worth a visit. See more..
  31. 1.0 Matson Hill Park (1 review)
    - Only Allows Bikes and Hikes
Biking Trails • Parks • Hiking Trails
St. Charles County has dozens a parks throughout the county. Candidly too many I believe our tax dollars could be spent in other areas. Nonetheless there are only 2 equine friendly parks (one can be ridden in 30 minutes). Matson Hill Park would be a perfect area for equine trails to accommodate many of the local residence who own horses. Our public parks should be used to accommodate more than just cyclists! 32. 5.0 Lake Vista Trail (1 review)
    - Beautiful, but don't do the full loop!
    Biking Trails • Hiking Trails
    Lake Vista Trail image
Lake Vista Trail in Blue Springs is a fine-gravel paved trail next to lake Blue Springs. It is advertised as a 5-mile loop but about a mile of that is on the shoulders of a 4-lane highway with speed limit of 45 mph. I would certainly advise not doing the loop so as to avoid this stretch. In spite of this unwelcome section, the rest of the trail is very enjoyable, especially for hiking. One can manage riding a bike here but the trail is not made for coasting. Three miles of the trail are through forest chirping with birds (when I went). Mile markers are posted every 0.2 miles. Some stretches may be muddy after rains. Lake Vista Trail is an excellent place for running or walking. Please be aware that no trail maps are posted at the trailheads or on the trail; so look up before you go. See more..
  33. 5.0 Carl L Chinnery Nature Trail (1 review)
    - Lovely Private Trail
    Hiking Trails
Carl L Chinnery Nature Trail image
Carl L. Chinnery Nature Trail is a 2-mile loop trail through beautiful woods. We get to see all kinds of features such as a lake called Lake #2, go through a railway tunnel, go past prairie, along a stream, and past some limestone outcroppings. All the while we enjoy lush vegetation abundant with birds. The trail is designated a Missouri Birding Trail. The beginning of the loop trail has a small spur leading to a natural bridge area. The main trail is wide and paved with crushed gravel. Frequent mile markers are posted with precise distance measurements. Also, fitness equipment is installed at several places along the length of the trail. The directions for the trailhead on the road in the Unity Village campus are not clearly marked, and one may end up going to a nearby parking lot which is not too far from the actual trailhead though. Visitors may also be interested in walking around the campus area appreciating the landscaping. I understand Carl L. Chinnery trail is a private trail. It is a lovely place. See more..

    Winterset Nature Area image
Winterset Nature Area in Lee’s Summit is a nature forest hiking area taking advantage of a creek. The fabulous Hartman Park serves as the trailhead for this trail. The loop trail (a less than a mile) is paved with woodchips. A part of the loop runs along Cedar Creek. The trail meanders through different types of trees and wildflowers, wood bridges and waterfalls. I heard and saw lots of birds during my walk. The highlight was the stop at the waterfall area where quite a few people were enjoying a dip in the waters on a hot day. See more..
  35. 4.0 Frog Hollow via Edgwood Nature Trail (1 review)
    - A Trail on the Bluff
    Spent 1-2 hours Hiking Trails
Frog Hollow rests behind and above the popular Edgewood Nature Trail. Although there are some shaded entries, the official entry point is at the parking lot near the intersection of Edgewood and Diamond Ridge. Just cross the bridge and start climbing. The trail is basically single-person in width, and you have to be aware of the rocks. Both hikers and bikers use it, but you can sometimes spend an hour without seeing a soul. You will, however, hear everything on Edgewood - that is just the nature of the bluff and the echo of sound. But you can easily put that aside in this shady, adventurous walks of switchbacks, hills, dales and a creek. It is a hidden gem of the city and a lot of fun to walk. Very scenic. A biker told me it is to be avoided when muddy, however. Enjoy! See more..
