Walk the halls where ordinary Americans made civil rights history. Built in 1839, the Old Courthouse is a prime example of mid-19th century federal architecture. But it is two landmark cases that secure its place in history. Beginning in 1847, the enslaved Dred Scott twice sued for his and his wife Harriet’s freedom. But, the U.S. Supreme Court decided against them, ruling that African-Americans were not citizens and had no right to sue. In 1873, St. Louis suffragette Virginia Minor and her husband filed a civil suit arguing for women’s right to vote. Although their suit was denied, they brought great attention to the fight for voting rights for all U.S. citizens. See more..

The "we" referred to in the title were three high school seniors and one adult. Everybody thought the tour was well worth our time. The museum on the first floor is great. Interesting artwork is featured throughout the building. Our tour guide was knowledgeable. Be aware that a 24-hour advanced reservation is required for a tour. There is no cost. See more..

This is one of the prettiest courthouses we have ever seen. We got here late in the day and it was closed, so we came back the next day and we are glad we did. There is beautiful mural inside the front door that depicts the history of Carthage from the time of Native Americans to present. An old time cage elevator is still in use. Definitely worth taking the time to go inside! See more..

An imposing, 1800s building that has a superb location overlooking the Missouri River and the State Capitol. Extensive and well maintained grounds--including the Carnahan Garden--with lovely old trees and handsome shrubs. Carolyn Bond began a restoration fund for the mansion, and it shows in the superb character and taste of each room. The ground floor is open every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 to noon and 1:00-3:00 (also Wednesdays, same times, when the legislature is in session in late spring). The docents are extremely knowledgeable and charmingly dressed in period costumes. Not to be missed. See more..
  5. 4.0 Missouri Supreme Court Building (9 reviews)

I was in Jefferson City for a conference at the Capitol Plaza, and I decided to make a quick visit to the Supreme Court building, which is just down the street. The building is open to the public throughout the week. You just go in the front door, and then you have to clear security. Security was not a big problem, but they make you check your cell phone at the door before they allow you access to the building. If you want a tour, you head upstairs to the law library. The tour guide was out on the day I visited, but the state law librarian gave me a very informative tour of the building. The experience was interesting, but if you are new to Jefferson City - or especially if you are bringing kids to Jefferson City - do the Capitol first, and maybe even the Governor's Mansion. The Supreme Court building is interesting, but probably not as engaging or as important as those two places. See more..
