  1. 4.5 Union Station (2.543 reviews)
    - Recommended visit, we were pleased
    Historic Sites
    Union Station image
We happened to be at a antique shop in West Bottoms where we chatted with the owner of the shop. He said we should go visit the Union Station which was built in 1914 after the original Kansas City Union Depot located in West Bottoms which used to be the original downtown but flooded badly in 1906. Anyway, we drove out to see the Union Station on our last day in KC, Thursday, March 9, 2023. It is an amazing building rivaling the Union Depot in Chicago, not quite Grand Central Station in NY, but still well worth a visit. It is free to visit the station public areas, but you must pay for parking if staying more than 30 minutes. There are several event areas and exhibits but those are also require paid admission. We were only staying for an hour or so. We viewed as much as we could for free. Great place to visit on a rainy day. See more..

    Missouri State Penitentiary image
The Missouri State Penitentiary (MSP) opened in 1836 along the banks of the Missouri River in Jefferson City, Missouri, the state capital. The prison housed inmates for 168 years and was the oldest continually operating prison west of the Mississippi until it was decommissioned in 2004. The prison was already 100 years old when Alcatraz began taking inmates. The Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureau now offers a wide variety of tours at the site, once named the "The bloodiest 47 acres in America" by Time magazine. Visitors can choose to take a History or Ghost Tour, among others, and will walk through several incredibly historic housing units, the vast upper yard of the property and the gas chamber, where 40 men and women were executed. - Perfect complement to the Arch
Thursday: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Government Buildings
    Old Courthouse image
Walk the halls where ordinary Americans made civil rights history. Built in 1839, the Old Courthouse is a prime example of mid-19th century federal architecture. But it is two landmark cases that secure its place in history. Beginning in 1847, the enslaved Dred Scott twice sued for his and his wife Harriet’s freedom. But, the U.S. Supreme Court decided against them, ruling that African-Americans were not citizens and had no right to sue. In 1873, St. Louis suffragette Virginia Minor and her husband filed a civil suit arguing for women’s right to vote. Although their suit was denied, they brought great attention to the fight for voting rights for all U.S. citizens. See more..

  7. 4.5 Ulysses S. Grant National Historical Site (546 reviews)
    - Great information on Grant
    Historic Sites
Ulysses S. Grant National Historical Site image
A park ranger gave the tour. He gave a brief history of Grant (about 15mins). You can walk through the house on your own and meet back up with the ranger before heading to the museum located in the old barn. The house was sparse not too many items adorned the rooms. It was pretty bare bones of just the house. The history of Grant was very interesting and how the house finally came into possession of the National parks. The museum in the barn is very nicely done with a lot of additional information (and it has ac). It was a little confusing which location was the house because it is next to the Busch property that had a lot more people. The Grant house is the first stop on the right. It is free to tour the property. The parking is right in the front, it is free. There is the typical little shop and clean restrooms. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Nice stop on our road trip only took us about 30-40mins with an 11 and 15 year old. See more..

Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Home and Museum image
If you are big fans of the tv show and the books, this is for you. There is a museum where you purchase tickets to tour the house. The museum is in a white building and has a nice gift shop and wonderful original artifacts from Laura’s life. The tour guides are great and very knowledgeable. Pictures are not allowed in the house-which makes it more special to see it. I recommend doing the museum last because her house and rock house have timed entries and the museum is a self pace. Try to be there when they open-it as not crowded for us. See more..
  10. 5.0 Bingham Waggoner Mansion & Estate (383 reviews)
    - Surprising Freedom and Detail
Thursday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites
Bingham Waggoner Mansion & Estate image
We visited last Saturday and enjoyed a personal tour with Ben. There were, surprisingly, no other parties or groups when we were there, in spite of the Truman Library/Museum being closed due to COVID (which might have left some unexpected spare time in an itinerary). The house was extremely well appointed with 90% authentic turn of the century (i.e. 1900) furnishings. Most places like this would have ropes and barriers to keep visitors from touching anything, but here there were essentially none. For example, I was INVITED to play the antique pump organ! Our guide had a great deal of personal experience maintaining the house/furnishings rather than just reciting a memorized script of talking points. We walked the short path to see the swales in the field from departing wagons/horses. I'd have to say you need to close your eyes and use your imagination to see any swales. We enjoyed our unhurried tour and walk through the grounds. See more..
  11. 5.0 America's National Churchill Museum (265 reviews)
    - Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen
Thursday: 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • History Museums
    America's National Churchill Museum image
In 1946 it was at Westminster College that Winston Churchill delivered one of the most significant speeches of his long and illustrious career. That address, formally entitled, The Sinews of Peace, but best known for that evocative phrase, An Iron Curtain has descended across the Continent, effectively marked the beginning of the Cold War and linked, forever, Fulton and Westminster College with Winston Churchill. In the 1960s Westminster College set out to mark what would be the 40th anniversary of Churchill's visit. After due consideration to traditional modes of commemoration, Westminster College settled on the rather more ambitious notion of moving a Christopher Wren designed Church from London. This Church, St. Mary the Virgin Aldermanbury, had stood in London since 1677 when it replaced an earlier structure that had sat on the same site since the 12th century. This magnificent building, badly damaged during the London Blitz, was moved stone by stone to Westminster's campus and rebuilt to Wren's original specifications.Beneath this Church is the National Churchill Museum itself which through the imaginative and innovative use of technology bring to life the story of Winston Churchill and the world he knew. Recently rebuilt form the ground up the new displays and the permanent exhibition, together with host of associated historical and cultural activities that support it was recognized the by the United States Congress as America's permanent tribute to this great man and formally recognized as America's National Churchill Museum. The partially reconstructed jail is inside a building ran by the LDS church. They did an outstanding job with telling the story of significance to their faith and the horrors of life in the jail. The two sisters took extra time to discuss any question I had, were extremely pleasant, and made me feel like the only visitor.
