  3. 5.0 America's National Churchill Museum (265 reviews)
    - Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen
Thursday: 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • History Museums
    America's National Churchill Museum image
In 1946 it was at Westminster College that Winston Churchill delivered one of the most significant speeches of his long and illustrious career. That address, formally entitled, The Sinews of Peace, but best known for that evocative phrase, An Iron Curtain has descended across the Continent, effectively marked the beginning of the Cold War and linked, forever, Fulton and Westminster College with Winston Churchill. In the 1960s Westminster College set out to mark what would be the 40th anniversary of Churchill's visit. After due consideration to traditional modes of commemoration, Westminster College settled on the rather more ambitious notion of moving a Christopher Wren designed Church from London. This Church, St. Mary the Virgin Aldermanbury, had stood in London since 1677 when it replaced an earlier structure that had sat on the same site since the 12th century. This magnificent building, badly damaged during the London Blitz, was moved stone by stone to Westminster's campus and rebuilt to Wren's original specifications.Beneath this Church is the National Churchill Museum itself which through the imaginative and innovative use of technology bring to life the story of Winston Churchill and the world he knew. Recently rebuilt form the ground up the new displays and the permanent exhibition, together with host of associated historical and cultural activities that support it was recognized the by the United States Congress as America's permanent tribute to this great man and formally recognized as America's National Churchill Museum. 4. 4.5 Frank Lloyd Wright House in Ebsworth Park (196 reviews)
    - The wonders of an equilateral parallelogram
    Architectural Buildings
Frank Lloyd Wright House in Ebsworth Park image
This was a great tour of another Wright gem. The entrance is somewhat hidden, and like the house, is probably meant to blend in with its surroundings. Reservations are very limited and need to be booked far in advance. Our docent was extremely informative, engaging, and very proud and respecting of both the house and its Kraus history. We've been to several other Wright homes; each one has its design similarities and uniqueness. This smaller Utopian home makes use of the equilateral parallelogram inside and out, including of all things the odd size bed! Also unique to this Wright house is that Russell Kraus, a stained glass artist, was allowed to design his own glass windows. There's a small gift shop attached to the house, and you will notice that the patio is itself a parallelogram. Not recalling our docent's name, we did share a brief chat following her tour and discovered we have vacationed in in the same South Jersey beach town of Stone Harbor. Small house and small world! Jasper County Courthouse image
This is one of the prettiest courthouses we have ever seen. We got here late in the day and it was closed, so we came back the next day and we are glad we did. There is beautiful mural inside the front door that depicts the history of Carthage from the time of Native Americans to present. An old time cage elevator is still in use. Definitely worth taking the time to go inside! See more..

I went here alone and hiked the trail behind the spring and viewed the little cave behind where the spring begins. I was impressed, it’s well kept. There were park rangers there if anyone had questions and the trail provided even more breathtaking views although it was steep and rocky in some places. See more..
  11. 4.5 Bauvais-Amoureux House (5 reviews)
    - The French settled the Illinois country bringing unique agriculture and architecture
Thursday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
    Bauvais-Amoureux House image
The Bauvais-Amoureux house is a well preserved example of a poteaux-en-terre or post in ground built home in New France along the Mississippi river. Timbers placed vertically in directory contact with the ground are found to in only five places in America, three in St Genevieve. The floating floor not attached to the timber post external walls further distinguish Bauvaus-Amoureux. The state of Missouri has maintained the house and tours are comprehensive even showing the pillars supporting the floating floor in the crawl space. See more..
  12. 5.0 Elgin Cottrell House (4 reviews)
    - A trip back in time. Do Not miss it!!!
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings
This fully renovated Victorian home is amazing. Richard Cottrell (the owner) has restored the house to its former glory. We were very fortunate to visit after he had decorated for Christmas. The trees and the ornaments, many of which are hand made, transported you back to another time. Be sure to check out the cross-stitched mantle piece. Each of the rooms is incredible on its own. Collectively, they are unique without many peers. Richard conducts the tour himself and includes numerous interesting facts on most of the items in each of the various rooms (6 or 8, I think). The tour is both entertaining and informative with plenty of personal interaction and time for discussion/questions. He discusses the pedigree of the home back to the original owners. This visit was an unexpected educational treat during our week long stay in the area. The tour was a little over an hour but we'll be talking about it for years. The cost was minimal at $5.00 per person. See more..
  13. 4.0 Mid-Missouri Museum of Independent Telephone Pioneers (4 reviews)
    - Fun and Interesting

Mid-Missouri Museum of Independent Telephone Pioneers image
The Mid-Missouri Museum of Independent Telephone Pioneers is a unique little museum in Blackwater, Missouri. The two-story brick building was built in 1907 as the Bank of Blackwater, but during the Great Depression the bank had to close its doors. The building was later used as a church, grocery store, and telephone company. Telephone switchboards were operated in the office and customers came in to pay their phone bills. The telephone industry made new developments until switch boards were no longer needed and the office closed. In 1997, Harold Jones of the Mid-Missouri Telephone Company donated the building to the Blackwater Preservation Society to become a museum he called ‘Mid-Missouri Museum of Independent Telephone Pioneers’. He also donated his collection of old telephones, switchboards, and other memorabilia. Today, his collection and other items can be viewed in the museum. Visitors are welcome free of charge, but donations to Blackwater Preservation Society are appreciated! See more..
  14. 5.0 Union Pacific Blackwater Depot (2 reviews)
    - Classic Railroad Station
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
    Union Pacific Blackwater Depot image
The original Blackwater Depot was built in 1888 by the Missouri Pacific Railroad. The Depot was a busy and vital place in its early years. It was a ticket office for the railroad, a telegraph office, and station to handle all mail and freight going through the area. As the trains and railway systems were updated, the depot was used less frequently. Eventually, there was no more need for the building. It fell into disrepair and was torn down in 1973. In 2008, this replica was rebuilt in its place by the Blackwater Preservation Society. It is now used as a community center that hosts both public and private events. See more..
