It’s a perfect place for sailing – with perpetual southwest breeze and a nationally recognized sailing school housed at the marina. Two boat launches make it easy to get in the water, as does a swimming beach. Want to stay on land? The park is great for photographing wildlife, picnicking with the family, or just reveling in the beauty of southern Missouri. The park also offers a range of lodging from campsites to cabins. 12. 4.5 Current River (28 reviews)
    - A Beautiful Natural Wonder
Spent More than 3 hours Bodies of Water
    Current River image
I've traveled to many places and I've seen many natural wonders, but I would rank Current River up there with almost any of them. The clear water running through the beautiful canyons is picturesque. I love to find a quiet place on the river away from the crowds and parties and set up a gravel bar camp. I wouldn't recommend the Van Buren part of current river unless you like crowds. Some people really like that, but I'm more into being alone in nature. The small mouth fishing is great, and the river just feels like home. It never gets old. See more..
  13. 4.0 Current River State Park (28 reviews)
    - Great Place to Enjoy the River!
    Bodies of Water
    Current River State Park image
With views of the scenic Current River and a history as a corporate retreat, Current River State Park offers a peaceful haven for today’s visitor. The park is built around the former retreat of the Alton Box Board Co. of Alton, Ill. Constructed during the late 1930s and early 1940s, the Alton Club buildings themselves reflect the rustic architectural style used by the National Park Service in the early part of the 20th century. Today’s visitors to Current River State Park can enjoy hiking trails, two lakes and picnic sites. Park staff provides tours of the historic Alton Club buildings and explains the park’s history. 14. 4.0 Longview Lake (27 reviews)
    - Lovely bike trail of six miles
Spent 1-2 hours Bodies of Water
    Longview Lake image
Longview Lake Park in Lee’s Summit provides a variety of recreational opportunities including water sports on a beautiful lake. I enjoyed the about six-mile bike trail on the western side of the lake. The trail is hard-packed gravel and maintained smooth. It may have runoff dips in case of heavy rains. The south end of the trail connects up with Meadowmere Park in Gladstone, which has another mile or so of blacktop trails. The trail is also great for walking and offers opportunities for watching birds living in the lush vegetation. Longview Lake Trail is a lovely slow bike ride fully enjoyable over the whole length. Roubidoux Creek & Spring image
The area is fantastic to be able to kick back and relax and to take the hicking trail from the Spring along the Roubidoux Creek all the down to the historic bridge at Historic Route 66. There are many information signs about the Trail of Tears encapment at this location. Having a handicap area set aside for fishing was outstanding and the park is very clean and there is a restroom at teh top of the Spring along with a small pavilion to sit and have a meal. The creek us jsut west of the town square that has restaurants ( A great German resturant, plus a historic former stage coach stop, then later a military hospital during the civil war and now a museum. l. 18. 4.5 Castor River Shut-Ins (15 reviews)
    - Fantastic for Adventure
Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Castor River Shut-Ins image
Beautiful and so fun. I would suggest that if you have a child under three you bring a wagon or make sure you have a backpack as the trail down is a bit of a hike. Also, encourage each older child to bring their own backpack with all of the essentials (a small net for catching minnows, goggles, snorkel, float or tube, towel and lunch). You may also want to bring a wagon if you have a big load, there were several parked at the end of the trail. Make sure everyone has water shoes! Just a wonderful day in the great outdoors. Lots to see and explore for older children who can swim. Very limited for tots as it can be dangerous because the rocks are slippery and the water does move. Beautiful water falls! Go visit but remember no facilities - you need to bring everything you need. See more..
  19. 4.0 Elk River (12 reviews)
    - You don't have to pay a resort in order to enjoy Elk River. It is free for all.
Spent More than 3 hours Bodies of Water
    Elk River image
Elk River snakes its way through Southwest Missouri and is the biggest attraction in Noel. You can bring your own canoe, swim gear, etc., and use it for free, or you can rent canoes from one of many local vendors who will also supply transportation if one of your party doesn't want to do the extra drive. What my dad did on some of our trips was have someone with a second car help out, so we didn't have to pay for a canoe plus bus ride back, but if you only have one vehicle, you can use the services. Dad's method: Drive to where we planned to stop. Leave one car there. Drive back to starting point, park car and launch the canoe(s) etc. Once we got to our destination, the car was there so someone could drive back, get the main car, and you can imagine the rest. The point of reviewing the river itself is to remind everyone that Elk River is free. There are many free launch points. You can find them easily once you get to Noel. See more..

  21. 5.0 Blue Spring (8 reviews)
    - Deepest spring in the area--peaceful surrounding
    Bodies of Water
    Blue Spring image
Blue Spring has a mirror like surface, and is at least 350 feet deep. The water is deep blue to emerald, depending on the depth of the area you are looking at. it is an easy walk from the parking area. Although there are many signs warning against swimming, fishing, and wading, campers on the nearby gravel bar will often come in swimsuits, bringing their beer and noise. A place like this should be treated with the greatest respect, and if you do so, you will be rewarded with moments of peace and serenity. Not to be missed. See more..

  23. 4.0 Greenville Recreation Area (7 reviews)
    - Family Camping
Spent More than 3 hours Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Greenville Recreation Area image
A great family camping site! Or even great for a day visit. It is built around a old town, so it has a lot of historical back ground and features foundations and steps of old buildings. It has a lot of bike trails. It is a great place for fall or early spring camping. Very family geared, not a lot of partying and drinking going on. We feel safe at this site. It has water and electric sites, however no septic hook up. You have to go to the dump station. No swimming at site, you have to go down the road a bit, which is why we go in the fall and take advantage of biking and hiking trails. See more..

    Greer Spring image
We stumbled here while on a trip to another location. This spring is beautiful. It doesn't not say swimming but I saw other families there. It is about a 40? minute hike to get to the spring. Warning there is poison ivy along the trail. I wish we had brought out suits as after hiking to this location, I would have loved to cool off in the water. See more..
