  2. 4.5 NS Documentation Centre of the City of Cologne (1.410 reviews)
    - Educative and harrowing
Sunday: 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Speciality Museums
NS Documentation Centre of the City of Cologne image
Cologne’s National Socialism Documentation Center was founded by a resolution passed by the Cologne city council 1979 and has become the largest regional memorial site in all of Germany for the victims of the Nazis. Since 1988, it has been housed in “EL-DE Haus," the EL-DE building, named for the initials of its owner, Catholic businessman Leopold Dahmen. This building was the headquarters of the Cologne Gestapo (secret police) between December 1935 and March 1945. In the final months of the war, several hundred people, most of them foreign forced laborers, were murdered in the courtyard of the building. In a bit of historical irony, the EL-DE building remained largely untouched by the ravages of the war. The NS Documentation Center (NS-DOC) is dedicated to memorializing the victims of the Nazi regime, as well as research and teaching about Cologne's history during the Nazi era. The former Gestapo prison was inaugurated as a memorial site on December 4, 1981. See more..

  5. 4.5 German Mining Museum (561 reviews)
    - Glück auf
Sunday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Speciality Museums
    German Mining Museum image
The extraction, processing and utilization of mineral geo-resources, subsumed here under the term ‘mining’, is a subject with great significance for the development of human civilization. The global importance of mining is increasing today, and will no doubt continue to do so in future. This is clear from the political campaigns and the intense media reactions associated with issues of raw material supplies and shortages, and also resource conservation (recycling and the use of renewable energy sources). The work of the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum, as the leading international museum on the mining industry, takes place within this socially relevant context. As one of the Leibniz Association’s research museums, the DBM is devoted to investigating the extraction, processing and utilization of mineral raw materials in the context of social, cultural, ecological and economic dynamics, spanning different historical periods. The museum shows the lasting impact which these processes have had on the development of society, and preserves relevant evidence for future generations. In short: The Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum is the cultural memory of the mining industry. See more..

    - Don't Miss this Opportunity
    Speciality Museums
    Kolumba image
Kolumbia was not on our list, but along our meandering path, we found a wall that looked like it was built on an ancient foundation. We meandered further, into the free section where we could see that archaeology revealed life back to Roman occupation. It lured us further into the section where we were willing to pay admission fees to see more archaeology realign layers of civilization: Roman occupation dwellings layered over with Medieval structures and than a parish church not far from Cologne Cathedral. All of this was revealed by the British bombing of central Cologne in 1942. Rebuilt is a breathtaking museum that houses contemporary art fused with classical art exhibition. The rooms go on forever, and there are quiet places to absorb and be absorbed into art installations. No didactic panels, which suits me just fine, and the small exhibition catalogue is German only. This is one of the most outstanding conversations between antiquity and contemporary life. Don't miss it. See more..

  11. 4.5 LWL Industrial Museum Zollern (213 reviews)
    - An insight into the industrial past of Dortmund
Sunday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Speciality Museums
    LWL Industrial Museum Zollern image
At first sight palatial redbrick facades and artistically adorned gables on buildings dotted around a grassy square are more reminiscent of an aristocratic residence than a coal mine. This was exactly one of the ideas behind the architecture. Today the “mansion of labour” in the west of Dortmund is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and impressive testimonies to Germany’s industrial history. The engine house with its famous Jugendstil doorway is already an icon. But the museum’s outstanding industrial architecture is only one of many different attractive facets. The various sections of the exhibition will take you into a world of harsh working conditions, and the stories of the men and women who worked in coalmining during the 20th century will bring this vividly to life. The museum can be highly recommended. It mainly shows taxidermied animals, which are presented in a natural looking environment. The museum is not too big, but you can nevertheless spend 2 hours there if you want to see everything. At the moment there is a well arranged special exhibition about dinosaurs. In the basement of the building there are some aquariums with live fish. It is also worth mentioning that you can take a break in a cafeteria. The entrance fee for adults is €5 and for pensioners €2.50. The museum is easily accessible by public transport. If you come by car, it is best to use one of the car parks nearby. See more..

Sunday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Speciality Museums • Art Museums
LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur image
The LWL-Museum fur Kunst und Kultur unites 1,000 years of art, ranging from the early Middle Ages through to the present. Guided tours, workshops and artists’ talks offer new ways of approaching art. Concerts, readings, dance, theatre and film attract the public into the foyer, the Lichthof in the old building as well as into the Auditorium. The museum concept takes into account the special needs of visitors with disabilities. Thanks to such highlights as the Soest Antependium, works by the tom Ring family of painters, the collections of expressionists artworks and of contemporary art the museum has achieved international recognition. The museum shows changing exhibitions across a floor space of approximately 1,000 square metres, with additional spaces for studio exhibitions and presentations of contemporary art. Since 1977, the museum has been the organizer of Skulptur Projekte every ten years, most recently in 2017, examining public space as a site for art. See more..

    Speciality Museums
    Red Dot Design Museum image
The Red Dot Design Museum is the largest of its kind in the world. There are some smaller museums in Singapore and in China. The museum is very well designed, which is in part due to the fact that modern, well-designed utility items and other objects are presented in an old industrial building on the site of the former coal mine site ″Zollverein″. A large part of the exhibited objects won the Red Dot Award just this year. The museum is larger than you might first imagine and you should bring plenty of time to take a close look at everything. The staff in the cash desk area are very friendly. Nearby there are enough free parking spaces. See more..

See more..

The Couven Museum presents how Aacheners lived in the late 18th and early 19th century. The museum was named after the father and son Aachen baroque architects Couven. During our visit they had an exhibit that span Germany in 1930 - 1960. The placards for this exhibit were in German but, it was easy to determine what these commonly used items were. An interesting building and excellent ground floor exhibit. Unfortunately the rest of the exhibits above ground floor were predominantly in German with no English anywhere, no leaflets/paper materials or anything either. The tickets are normally 6-7 € but I paid 10,50 € because there was an exhibition of a contemporary Wilson at the moment. The audioguide costs 2€ and is worth buying because you will get the works interpretations as well as some details from the live if Ernst. There are 9 rooms the work is exhibited in, 2 downstairs and the rest upstairs. There is a lift, gift shop and a restaurant with prices 10-15€ per meal. After getting of the train it is very easy to find the museum according to the navigation tables. The exhibition includes the statues as well as paintings of Ernst. The building itself is one Ernst used to visit for dancing events. I personally like his statues, which are playful and cute. You will learn what objects Ernst was using as templates for his forms and that his main motifs were birds and fish. I recommend to visit it also with children, they might enjoy the statues. LWL-Museum für Naturkunde Westfälisches Landesmuseum mit Planetarium image
Visited here with my husband and two young children during our stay in Muenster. I wasn't sure what to expect as several reviews had suggested their visit didn't last long because all the signs were in German, I suppose unsurprisingly. We didn't realise there even was an English audio guide so we made do with what was available on the general entrance ticket but we had a great time here. We spent a whole afternoon looking around the exhibits, and that was even with the planetarium being closed for renovation at the moment. There is a section about space (would usually include the planetarium), one about animals in the local area, both past and present, one about dinosaurs, and one about the forest. There is also a nice cafe and a gift shop. Though the signs were not in English it was not difficult to work out what the point of the displays was. Our children had a great afternoon there, as did we. I would definitely recommend it to others visiting the area. See more..

My son loved this place. It wasn't so much a museum as an activity science centre. There were activities for every type of child: those who like to dress up could enjoy the cultural area with outfits and activities from different countries ; for kids who like to run and the harbour and play boat offer hours of dragging and lifting, or the animal tunnels provide areas to discover ; there are painting activities and making activities and computer animation. My son became fixated with the boat and gathered a small band of multinational children who, without a common language were still able to play and follow each others gestured instructions to successfully supply their boat with grain and cast it off. Any child with an imagination and love of hands on activity will enjoy this place. There is a cafe to grab food and drinks and good toilet facilities. See more..

So proud of all the people who made the telling of this horrific story happen. To not learn the lessons from the Nazi era, as uncomfortable as it is for the German people, and show how so very many German people were resisting the regime is an important message. Given the sickening rise of right-wing politics in the UK and elsewhere, people need to know how quite apart from Jews and gay men, socialists, catholics and people with disabilities where persecuted and killed by the regime, built on a presumed superior race and people unable to see how they were being manipulated by fear, stoked by xenophobia, racism and homophbia. Sound familiar in 2020? Alas yes. A fitting and poignant last visit to mainland Europe, before Brexit at the end of this month. Enough said. Thank you for giving hope from the often unsung generosity of spirit and inclusivity of most people in the world. See more..

In the Cathedral is preserved the Golden sculpture of the Madonna, the patron Saint of the diocese. It is a figure, 74 cm high, made of poplar wood and covered with gold leaf. It was made during the Abbey of Matilda. In the Cathedral there is a monumental seven-candle, which also belongs to the era of the abbess Matilda. Its height is 2.26 m, width — 1.88 m. Also kept in the Cathedral child crown of Otto III, four crosses, which belonged to Ottoneum, the sword of Attonito, which according to legend was killed the Holy martyrs Cosmas and Damian, the manuscript is Carolingian, the sculpture of St. Roch of the XVI century.
