LWL-Museum für Naturkunde Westfälisches Landesmuseum mit Planetarium, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
4.5 (99 reviews) Monday: Spent Ranking #12 in Muenster Speciality Museums
An afternoon well spent
Visited here with my husband and two young children during our stay in Muenster. I wasn't sure what to expect as several reviews had suggested their visit didn't last long because all the signs were in German, I suppose unsurprisingly. We didn't realise there even was an English audio guide so we made do with what was available on the general entrance ticket but we had a great time here. We spent a whole afternoon looking around the exhibits, and that was even with the planetarium being closed for renovation at the moment. There is a section about space (would usually include the planetarium), one about animals in the local area, both past and present, one about dinosaurs, and one about the forest. There is also a nice cafe and a gift shop. Though the signs were not in English it was not difficult to work out what the point of the displays was. Our children had a great afternoon there, as did we. I would definitely recommend it to others visiting the area.

2 hrs well spent, 8/10 will visit again
The museum is not very big and it is reasonably priced. I got the student discount when I purchased the combined ticket for the museum and planetarium. The museum features dinosaurs, whales, insects, alongside animals and birds of a more recent era. The dinosaur section houses original fossils which is definitely worth seeing. The models of dinosaurs are also breathtaking. I have never seen stuffed animals look so life-like. The explanations are all in German, so if you don't speak German it is a bit difficult to understand the descriptions. On the other hand, the explanations are written in very simple German, so even an intermediate speaker can understand almost all the information. The staff are polite and helpful. The virtual reality sandbox is amazing and is a really good tool to explain natural occurrences such as canal formation, erosion etc.to children. There are illustrated explanations which are designed to hold everyone's attention. All in all, if you are looking to spend 2 hrs learning while having fun, this is the place to go. Even if you are not interested in learning, the fossils and the life-like stuffed animals are definitely worth a visit. The planetarium show didn't impress me though. 8/10 will visit again.
