unique special exhibits

The majority of the art is graphics.
Visited the Picasso Museum in Muenster, which is the first Picasso museum to open in Germany, in a group, and it seemed we had much of the museum to ourselves. We had been to the Picasso Museum in Barcelona and some other small Picasso museums in southern France, in particular the one in Antibes, to which he donated 23 paintings and 44 drawings. This museum in Muenster contains a collection of over 1,000 works by Pablo Picasso, with more than 780 lithographs and over a hundred etchings. So, the majority of the art is indeed graphics; in fact, this museum own the world's largest collection of Picasso lithographs. Having gorged on the colourful sunny exuberance of the maitre's paintings this collection is more subdued, more understated. To be honest we found these examples Picasso's work less inspiring compared to his work found in other locations. We were informed that paintings and sculptures by Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Alberto Giacometti and Joan Miró had been on display in the special exhibition Maeght: The Adventure of Modernity back in late 2008. There was a lot of interesting background information about Picasso and the museum is spacious and spread over two floors. In the end, unfortunately, we found this collection of Picasso's work to be relatively banal compared to so many of his masterpieces on display in other locations - the very enthusiastic expert guide was much appreciated.

    Great expectations disappointed
After seeing the breathtaking poster showing Derain's 'Big Ben' to announce the current exhibition (Im Rausch der Farbe - In an Ecstasy of Colour) at Picasso Museum we went there today, truly expecting a representative display covering Matisse, Gauguin, Les Fauves and others and actually showing an ecstasy of colour. However, we were rather disappointed. It is not do much that the paintings disappointed us - the exhibition just could not live up to the wild claims made in the posters announcing it. One painting by Gauguin (and not one representing his attempts to catch the lightning the tropics), Derain's Big Ben (inexplicably covered by a sheet of glass) and Port of Collioure gave glimpses of colour. However, they looked strangely muted, like all the other paintings, lithographs, watercolours on display, by the dull lighting that kept the rooms almost dark. All in all much less enjoyable than expected.
