A well spend day to the area!

The crowds cheered in joy when the Kaiser officially opened the Henrichenburg Ship Lift on the 11th August 1899. Over a century later visitors to the largest construction on the Dortmund-Ems canal are equally delighted at what they can see and experience. The gigantic ship lift has lain still for over 40 years. But the history of the ship lift and the people who worked on the canal has been brought back to life in our museum. We can offer you a unique collection of historic boats and other floating equipment, some of which even go into operation on special occasions. During the summer season a pleasure steamer departs from the museum quay several times a day. Climb aboard!

    Fascinating piece of Industrial Engineering
Visited here on 05/09/17 the main attraction is the old boat lift which is a superb piece of industrial engineering. It used to lift boats on the Dortmund - Ems canal. There is an attached museum and boat yard. A short 5-10 minute walk will take you to the old lock, the new boat lift which is also disused and the current operational lock. If you are lucky you will get to see the new lock in operation which is impressively large. There is also a museum next to the new lock which you have to pass through to view the new lock in operation. The combi ticket covers all these attractions and was a great value at €4.70. We spent 4 hours wandering around and there is an old London bus cafe and boat trips provided there is a minimum of 10 persons on board. A bit off the beaten track in the middle of the Ruhr but well worth a visit.

    Quite original
This is an interesting place with some some old boats, but the boat "lift" is specially original and worth a look. The place is quite large and allows for a stroll between its diverse buildings. Better by good weather as most things are outside. There are a few "satellite exhibitions too on various topics.
