  1. 4.5 Moehnesee (166 reviews)
    - The Mohne Dam, getting there from Soest, and the museum
    Dams
    Moehnesee image
For anyone who's seen the dam in the film, the reality is very, very evocative. It's huge, and it looks exactly like it does in the film. The reservoir itself's evocative too. It's easy to imagine the scene, seventy years ago, with the planes coming in over the low hills, the cold, dark, choppy water, the fire from the towers...

To get to the dam from Soest, a taxi (late 2013) costs between €30 and €40 there and back, including a short wait at the dam so you can have a look round. The journey by taxi takes about a quarter of an hour each way. Soest taxi-rank is just outside the station. Alternatively, you can get a bus, but they don't run very often. There's a good information office inside Soest station. There IS in fact a museum about the raid, but it's near the Eder dam (the second), not the Mohne. It's even been reviewed on Tripadvisor. Search for "Sperrmauer Museum Edersee". See more..
  2. 4.5 Möhnesee Staumauer (111 reviews)
    - Stunning Views

As part of a WW2 Bomber Command tour, the dam was a must see as part of our trip. The dam is vast and very well made - amazing to think that a Lancaster aircraft with the help of a bouncing bomb in May 1943 could have destroyed it. The Dambusters from 617 Sqn RAF are well known for breaking the dam which was rebuilt again 8 months later. Today, a lovely spot on a sunny day. Busy with tourists of all nationalities. The top of the dam is wide and flat so plenty of space for everyone to walk with baby buggies and wheelchairs. See more..

I've visited last wednesday with my wife. Hiked 13km /6h & it was amazing: the far stunning views at the lakes with clear blue-green water, the Forest with many types of threes, very silent/remote from noise/people. See some of my pictures. Would recommend everyone this perfect experience!! See more..

I wanted to see the Mohnesee Dam as I last saw it in 1985. It has changed considerably but in a nice way and it's still not too touristy. There are hotels and cafes alongside it but not to the extent I had imagined. It was a really lovely place and is well worth visiting. See more..
  5. 3.5 Steinbachtalsperre (27 reviews)
Gibt soetwas selten in Deutschland. Preise moderat. See more..
