- 4.5 Aachen Cathedral (3.762 reviews)
-Take the Tour. Take the Tour. Take the Tour.
Spent 1-2 hours Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
Too many times when visiting a famous European church we have taken advantage of free admission and simply wandered through the building, getting some sense of the power of the architecture and artistry but having a minimal look into the history. Not this time. On the advice of a borrowed guide book we purchased (5 euros each) a tour, and boy are we glad we did. Getting that knowledge about the way the church was constructed ( over many years and different architectural styles) and the personalities involved over the years gave us a much greater appreciation for the historical significant of what we were seeing-. As other reviewers have noted, the tours get an up close and personal look at Charlemagne’s Sarcophagus, the throne room and other fascinating details in the church. And, our tour guide was both informative and entertaining. My advice? Take the tour. Take the tour. Take the tour. See more..
- 4.5 Treasury of Aachen Cathedral (790 reviews)
-From the times of Charlemagne and holy Roman emperors
Spent < 1 hour Religious Sites
One of the top collections of European medieval art is exhibited here. Significant also because it sheds light on the roots of modern Europe as we know it now. The holy Roman emperors were crowned at Aachen cathedral for centuries. The objects that gave meaning to their role such as sceptors, crowns, goblets etc. are impressive to observe also because of the craftmanship with which they were made. Admission fee 6€ Closed on Mondays. See more..

- 4.5 Muenster Cathedral (St. Paulus Dom) (539 reviews)
-Majestic
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Religious Sites
Münster Cathedral is one of those churches that is both overwhelming and soothing. Sit down in the cavernous space and take in the heritage atmosphere. For this church, however built in the 13th century, is already the third "edition" of the most important Catholic church in Münster. The first church on this spot was built in the 9th century. Münster Cathedral is one of the most important buildings of the historic center of Münster. Entrance is free and the place isn't overrun by tourist groups, surely not in January. See more..
- 4.5 Shrine of the Three Kings (497 reviews)
-Amazing Shrine
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Religious Sites
Not sure why this is a separate attraction as it’s inside the Cologne Cathedral. The shrine is a reliquary believed to contain the bones of the three magi who visited Jesus. “Borrowed” by Babarossa from the Church of Saint Eustorgio in Milan, it’s been in Cologne since the 12th century. The exterior decoration of gold and silver gilds are a masterpiece of medieval metalwork. As with most shrines, the figures are a mixture of prophets, apostles and Jesus. If you go on the guided tour with Dom Forum, you’ll get to visit the high Altar and get a better look at the shrine. See more..

- 4.0 Reinoldikirche (92 reviews)
-One to visit if you like old buildings!
Historic Sites • Religious Sites
I visited the Renoilikirche last week and throughly enjoyed it. The work that has gone into restoring this building to its pre-war splendour must have been immense. Although the stained glass windows are now modern they fit so beautifully into the building that it doesn't actually dawn on you that they are from a different era until you look closely. See more..

-Hearty hot soup and crusty bread on a cold wet day .. YUMMY!!!
Friday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
After a longish hike in the nearby Eifel national park, we made our way to the abbey where parking was easy and free. It was past 1.30pm but the abbey's restaurant was humming with activity and tables were hard to come by. However, with a quick turnover of happily fed people, we found our table. Do note that there is not much space for a stroller or wheelchair inside the restaurant. Grabbing a tray, a cafeteria-style counter saw the selection of drinks (Trappist beer, of course...) and the crowd-favorite: pea soup. The latter was thick and hearty, and quite delicious. You can choose to have a sausage with it or some crusty bread. And you will NOT REGRET having stopped by for this classic soup lunch at the abbey!! See more..
- 4.5 Sri Kamadchi Ampal Tempel (50 reviews)
-Hamm temple.... A must visit for every Hindu in Europe
Religious Sites
Chitran, a Taxi driver in Erlangen, told me about this Temple in Hamm. Not many of my friends knew about it and when I checked the distance, it was over 400 Kms from Erlangen. All of a sudden on a Saturday morning, I decided to make the journey, started around 11.30 am and reached around 4 PM. Somehow, the Gopuram was not very visible from a distance, but once I reached and went inside, it was a great experience. The cleanliness, the thorough Puja, at 6 PM, the majestic Kamatchi Amman main Sannidhi, all had me simply spellbound. A clear must for anyone in Europe, who is longing to visit a traditional temple here in Germany. The trip was fully worth it. See more..

- 4.5 Brauweiler Abbey (26 reviews)
-Very interesting place
Friday: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites
The Brauweiler Abbey is home of a cultural and service center of the LVR. After the dissolution of the Benedictine Abbey at the beginning of the 19th century, the cultural monument went through a varied history - from a hostel for beggars and workhouse to a concentration camp, Gestapo-Prison and state clinic for psychiatry. Today you can follow the historical traces of the almost 1000-year history of the abbey. In addition, the cultural center offers numerous events. Many of the premises can be rented for private and professional purposes. See more..

-Beautiful church at Christmas
Spent < 1 hour Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
When you hear the big bells start to toll, you know you have 10 minutes to get to Mass! This is a Roman Catholic Church and although we're Canadian, we attended midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. We all knew the story, and the rituals if Mass were the same, only the language was different. The church was crowded, but not full and we were lucky to score seats even though we couldn't sit together. It was beautifully, yet simply decorated with enormous fir trees at the altar decorated with straw stars and lit with soft white fairy lights. Red poinsettias were the plants of choice and the red added a glow of colour to the green. To the right of the altar was a life-size nativity scene with the usual figures, and all was lit softly. The organ was the instrument that evening and there was a choir of 5 or 6 people. Their voices were magnificent, falling and flowing and reaching a soprano's great range. It was so incredibly poignant that tears sprang to my eyes, especially when they sang the Halleluia chorus of Handel's Messiah. Incense hung thickly through the air and responses were sung by the priest and parishioners. This church is quite old from the middle of the 12th century and was originally built in the Romanesque style with arched round windows, but through the centuries, it was renovated, and expanded in the Gothic style with arched pointed windows. Stone columns support the roof and old wooden statues gaze down at the people. It has what I call an onion tower steeple with a bulbous bottom, followed by a pointed spire covered in slate. It sits in a lovely town square with a stone Rathaus beside it which is now a restaurant. See more..

- 4.5 Nikolaus Kloster (12 reviews)
-A unique atmosphere...
Religious Sites
...in this working monastery. One of the fathers is in charge of guest accommodation, they have about 30 rooms or so without private facilities (other then a washbasin). Shared bathrooms and toilets are kept spotless though. You enter the building through a long corridor, past the chapel and find your way to the office, where you´d ring a bell and wait for someone to look after you. Check in is swift, payment used to be upfront and cash only and breakfast needs to be pre-booked the night before. It seems big trouble for them if you only decide in the morning to have breakfast, which itself is rather spartan, bread, some cheese, cold cuts, cerials and fruit, tea and coffee. Anyhow, their room rates are rather good, they do not seem to be applying any yield management, hence during busy times their rooms are a steal. You´d want a car though, it is only 20mins from Duesseldorf and Moenechengladbach but you are out in the sticks with virtually no public transport, which I found nice, cause it´s really quiet there. We visited the monastery as part of a day-trip from Bodenwerder and realised about half way to Höxter that we had forgotten our lunch sandwiches in the fridge... which was frustrating since my hubby makes the best sandwiches ever! Upon our arrival, much to our astonishment, we were greeted by his excellency Bishop Anba Damian who invited us to have lunch, which was plentiful and very delicious! Just as well we left the sandwiches behind... We were guided for free though their biblical / Egyptian museum and there is also a small religious shop. If you feel inclined to do so, there is a box for donations in the dining hall. We felt truly blessed visiting this monastery and meeting Bishop Anba Damian. See more..

It is always a pleasure to visit the Klosterkirche when in Wuppertal. I was born in the convent which forms part of the Church. When you go inside, there is always a serene feeling, and it is a wonder to see the outstanding decor. If you are able to gain entry to the original chapel attached, you will be astounded to be in a chapel over 600 years old, with many of the ordinal features still there. The town itself is great to visit, with many woodland trails and a nice little ice cream shop near the railway crossing. See more..

-Die Wallfahrtsbasilika Mariä Heimsuchung in Werl.
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
See more..

See more..

See more..

It was not easy to find this place as Tripadvisor gives the wrong address. The right address is Lingener strasse 53, 48429 Rheine. Better said it is exact at the corner of Lingener strasse and Peterstrasse, next to the house number 53 ( look at the 'map' picture). It is a small good managed jewish cemetary, surrounded by approximately 2m tall red brick stone wall and locked fence. We could not get inside but we could see it from outside. Telgte is a pleasant town for a stroll and a little something at one of the cafes, and this chapel is well worth a stop. Built at the end of the Thirty Years' War in the 1600s, the main feature is a venerated 14th century wooden statue of the sorrowful Mary holding Jesus, which has attracted pilgrims from across Europe. The image is said to provide solace from pain and illness. Display cases in the round chapel show various images of arms, hands, and legs, messages of thanks.
