    Aachen Cathedral image
Too many times when visiting a famous European church we have taken advantage of free admission and simply wandered through the building, getting some sense of the power of the architecture and artistry but having a minimal look into the history. Not this time. On the advice of a borrowed guide book we purchased (5 euros each) a tour, and boy are we glad we did. Getting that knowledge about the way the church was constructed ( over many years and different architectural styles) and the personalities involved over the years gave us a much greater appreciation for the historical significant of what we were seeing-. As other reviewers have noted, the tours get an up close and personal look at Charlemagne’s Sarcophagus, the throne room and other fascinating details in the church. And, our tour guide was both informative and entertaining. My advice? Take the tour. Take the tour. Take the tour. See more..

  4. 4.5 Paderborn Cathedral (Dom zu Paderborn) (272 reviews)
    - Paderborn is Worth the Trip

Paderborn Cathedral (Dom zu Paderborn) image
One of the nicest cathedrals we have visited anywhere. Although austere in the German fashion, it is still lovely. Pay particular attention to the beautiful ironwork on all the chapels. I've never seen anything like it anywhere. It was just remarkable. I was told it was over 700!years old. That was some masterful craftsmanship. Also look for the peacocks, which appear everywhere. The peacock is the emblem of the patron Saint, Liborius. The wonderful gentlemen at the information counter (awesome idea!!!! Never seen that at any other church before!) explained that when his body was carried back from France, a peacock flew over the procession for the entire 800km, 40 day journey. When he was finally returned to Paderborn, the peacock dropped dead from the sky, and became inextricably linked forever more. Want to entertain a kid? Play I Spy for peacocks here and in the excellent museum. See more..

There are two streets that meet in the Old Town both packed with pubs, bars and restaurants namely Bolkerstraße and Hunsrueckenstraße and were they meet is Kirche St Andreas which in my opinion is one of the most beautiful churches in Dusseldorf. The exterior is very eye catching, a beautiful Baroque building, the interior is serene, beautiful white walls and ceilings ,ornate details throughout this church, it's just one beautiful church and one of the landmark buildings in the Old Town. Easy to locate along Hunsrueckenstraße, most definitely well worth checking out if your in the area. See more..

  8. 3.5 Abtei Mariawald (76 reviews)
    - Hearty hot soup and crusty bread on a cold wet day .. YUMMY!!!
Thursday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
    Abtei Mariawald image
After a longish hike in the nearby Eifel national park, we made our way to the abbey where parking was easy and free. It was past 1.30pm but the abbey's restaurant was humming with activity and tables were hard to come by. However, with a quick turnover of happily fed people, we found our table. Do note that there is not much space for a stroller or wheelchair inside the restaurant. Grabbing a tray, a cafeteria-style counter saw the selection of drinks (Trappist beer, of course...) and the crowd-favorite: pea soup. The latter was thick and hearty, and quite delicious. You can choose to have a sausage with it or some crusty bread. And you will NOT REGRET having stopped by for this classic soup lunch at the abbey!! See more..

This church has been beautifully refurbished and is such an emotional place to walk around. The inside of the building matches the finish of the exterior building work. The three cages hanging from the tower is a reminder of the times, when this church would have been established. We were so lucky to be treated to someone playing the fantastic pipe organ housed inside. The sound that surrounds you will easily bring you to tears. See more..

    - A German church gem, worth a detour

    Kirche Lieberhausen image
In the bunte Kirche in Lieberhausen we looked at the beautiful mediaeval mural paintings that are still very clear to see. The church is open every day, we were there on Good Friday and welcome to have a look and walk around. Especcially beautiful is the picture with the weighing scale. Almost all the walls are covered with these paintings, so well known in France but also to be seen in Germany. One is allowed to take pictures. When in this area, about 30 km east of Koln, take a detour to visit this church. See more..
  21. 5.0 Dorfkirche Stiepel (19 reviews)
    - Überraschung

    Dorfkirche Stiepel image
See more..
  22. 4.0 St. Maria Himmelfahrt (19 reviews)

    St. Maria Himmelfahrt image
In 1341 count Dietrich IX moved stift Monterberg (Kalkar) to Kleve and replaced the Johanniskirche by a new Collegiate Church, in 1356 the choir was consecrated, completed in 1426. Heavily damaged in 1794 during the invasion of French revolutionary troops, destroyed again during WW II, reconstruction in 1951. In the enormous space massive pillars of trachyte support arches and vaults, thus simultaneously dividing the enormous Church Hall in a nave and two aisles. Beautiful is the restored Marian-altar in the choir (H. Douverman) and the crusifix-altar in the aisle at the right handside (created mid-16th century in Antwerp). Furthermore the epitaph in the choir of the right handside aisle, the Ducal Tomb, the northern entrance hall and the main altar. See more..
  23. 4.5 Dominikanerkirche (19 reviews)
    - Art, Religion and Science - an opportunity to reflect in gray mirrors!
    Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
    Dominikanerkirche image
The artist Gerhard Richter has recreated the Foucault experiment from 1851 which finally demonstrated to the satisfaction of the Roman Catholic church that the earth rotated on its own axis therefore the sun was the centre of the Universe... Opening in 2018 this installation comprises two double gray mirrors so the visitors and the giant pendulum are seen in constantly moving relationships. The wire is over 28 metres long and the sphere, which was designed by the Physics department at Munster University and weighs 48 kilograms, swings elegantly over a huge disc on the floor with the 360 degrees etched to demonstrate the movement of the earth's surface. The pendulum is powered by electro-magnets. Visitors take a seat to watch and wait while the minutes tick by and, slower than the hour hand of a clock, you can note the displacement. A victory for science? Yes, but in Munster the setting is God's and the concept is the artist's! A moral score draw! It is free to enter and time seems to stand still in an attraction that is destined to be a huge hit with locals and visitors alike. See more..

  26. 4.0 St. Maria von den Engeln (17 reviews)
    - Beautiful Baroque Church.
    Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
St. Maria von den Engeln image
The St. Mary of the Angels church was built in the 15th century and belongs to most beautidul Baroque style churches in Germany. The church was built as convent church of the Franciscans, in 1735 it became the castle church of St. Mary of the Angels. Between the single-nave building and the castle, the orangery with a two-storey oratory was built. Inside and outside, the church seems rather simple, but chapel-like niches and arched ribbed vaulting articulate the space. The high altar made of colored stucco marble, which fills the entire chancel to below the vault, is a masterpiece. So is the organ above the main entrance. After being destroyed during the Second World War, the church was restored complety during the decades after the war. Definitely worth a visit when you are in Brühl, only a few steps away from the Market Square. Admission is free. See more..

  30. 4.5 St. Peter und Paul (14 reviews)
    - Beautiful church at Christmas
Spent < 1 hour Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
    St. Peter und Paul image
When you hear the big bells start to toll, you know you have 10 minutes to get to Mass! This is a Roman Catholic Church and although we're Canadian, we attended midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. We all knew the story, and the rituals if Mass were the same, only the language was different. The church was crowded, but not full and we were lucky to score seats even though we couldn't sit together. It was beautifully, yet simply decorated with enormous fir trees at the altar decorated with straw stars and lit with soft white fairy lights. Red poinsettias were the plants of choice and the red added a glow of colour to the green. To the right of the altar was a life-size nativity scene with the usual figures, and all was lit softly. The organ was the instrument that evening and there was a choir of 5 or 6 people. Their voices were magnificent, falling and flowing and reaching a soprano's great range. It was so incredibly poignant that tears sprang to my eyes, especially when they sang the Halleluia chorus of Handel's Messiah. Incense hung thickly through the air and responses were sung by the priest and parishioners. This church is quite old from the middle of the 12th century and was originally built in the Romanesque style with arched round windows, but through the centuries, it was renovated, and expanded in the Gothic style with arched pointed windows. Stone columns support the roof and old wooden statues gaze down at the people. It has what I call an onion tower steeple with a bulbous bottom, followed by a pointed spire covered in slate. It sits in a lovely town square with a stone Rathaus beside it which is now a restaurant. See more..

  34. 4.0 Liebfrauen- oder Überwasserkirche (13 reviews)
    - medieval meets modern
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
    Liebfrauen- oder Überwasserkirche image
I have lived next to this church for over 15 years. I hear its bells regularly. It was originally built in 1300 and was badly destroyed in the Second World War. For this reason, when you walk into the church, you immediately realize that you are confronted with a church that is originally classic Gothic which has undergone many historical changes. I recommend this church not as a monument of Gothic art (though it is), but as a monument to how medieval meets modern after the catastrophe of the Second World War. Next to this church is the stunning ultra-modern "Bishop's Library" or rather "Diözesanbibliothek" which is also worth a quick visit (the interior is absolutely stunning) - and this ultra-modern edifice answers the question: what sort of building do you erect next to an historical church from the year 1300? The interior of the church is very serene. It is also the church where the bishop of Münster, later cardinal, Von Galen delivered one of his sermons denouncing the Nazis' policy of gassing the mentally retarded. He was the only bishop in Germany during the Nazi period to raise his voice in protest. So, if you visit the church, pause for a minute and think back to 1941. There were Gestapo spies in the congregation of course when Bishop von Galen delivered his denunciation (later reprinted by the British and distributed as flyers from airplanes over Germany as evidence of the Catholic resistance to Hitler). Some of the listeners didn't know how to react. Some left, most stayed. Maybe it's worth lighting a candle here before you leave. See more..

    Markuskapelle image
The Markuskapelle is a tiny jewel of a chapel near the Altenberg Dom and Kuchenhof. It occupies a small, compact space with beautiful stained glass windows in a church of Gothic design. There is a small altar towards the back of the church and being here felt truly like getting away from everything. It inspired me to pray, give thanks, sit and meditate and enjoy the quiet that pervaded the place. I loved this little jewel of a chapel and would have liked to spend more time to get in touch with my soul. And, being the Camino fanatic that I am, wouldn't you want to know, but I found an arrow a few hundred meters away pointing pilgrims where the trail was that would lead them to Cologne and farther to eventually reach Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Incredible! See more..

Kirche St. Maria zur Wiese image
This is a church well known to students of architecture and history, for good reason. It's a calm, beautiful 14th century building inside, with the effect created by slender piers that reach uninterrupted to the vault. Because the aisles are as high as the nave, the church has a feeling of balance. The church has splendid late medieval windows, statues, and a spectacular tabernacle for the Host, created around 1500, among other works of art and craftsmanship. See more..

    St. Petri-Pauli in Soest image
St. Petri-Pauli in Soest is a Lutheran Church at ParadieserWeg 84. The church at Petrikirchhof 10 is the Petri-Kirche, (Petri church or St. Petri.) downtown, across the street from the Patrokoli Dom, but its web page calls itself the St. Petri-Pauli church. Literature from the city just call it the Petri-Kirche. This brief review is for the downtown Petri-Kirche. The origins of this church are over 1000 years old. The present church dates to the Romanesque era but has both Gothic and Baroque elements. It was heavily damaged in the war and has been rebuilt and renovated since. The interior is quite plain, but there are some features worth seeing, including the stained glass windows, the paintings, stonework, altars and the pulpit. Outside, the baroque spire seems out of place. See more..
