Red Dot Design Museum, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

4.5 (183 reviews) Spent Ranking #11 in Essen Speciality Museums

Hidden gem!

The Red Dot Design Museum is the largest of its kind in the world. There are some smaller museums in Singapore and in China. The museum is very well designed, which is in part due to the fact that modern, well-designed utility items and other objects are presented in an old industrial building on the site of the former coal mine site ″Zollverein″. A large part of the exhibited objects won the Red Dot Award just this year. The museum is larger than you might first imagine and you should bring plenty of time to take a close look at everything. The staff in the cash desk area are very friendly. Nearby there are enough free parking spaces.

    Great designs & Great atmosphere!
I really enjoyed this museum more than I have anticipated. It was a surprisingly refreshing break from the many history and art museums that I have visited during my trip to Western Germany. This museum focused on the artistic aspect of functional design. It is pretty neat to see these modern designs against the weathered interior of the coal mine. And there is a lot to see! If you are into technology or interior decorating, this place is a must! The labels are both in English and German. Many of the items are common-place, however, seeing them behind glass, gets you to focus on the innovative design concept behind each one. There were some very futuristic-like items too. I felt like I was window shopping, and making a mental wish list of things I would like to own someday!

    Tate modern, more consequently
What's interesting about this museum are less the items on display, namely examples of good contemporary industrial design, but the venue itself and the exhibition concept. In fact, the Red dot museum is located in the power plant of the coal work Zeche Zollverein, which has been conserved as such. Thus, you find exhibits, that is design products, more or less scattered around in a huge three or four storey high industrial structure with all its steel pipes, concrete pillars and metal stairways. A stunning experience.
