  2. 4.5 Weltkulturerbe Rammelsberg Museum & Besucherbergwerk (562 reviews)
    - Disappointing due to language

Weltkulturerbe Rammelsberg Museum & Besucherbergwerk image
We booked this mine tour for 3:00 pm as all other slots were full. Unfortunately, the ticket cashier neglected to tell us that it would be German speaking only. She knew we were English when we asked for tickets. The guide noticed , once we got underground and out of the train that we couldn’t understand so he explained a little in English and then said if we came back the next day( the day we were departing) for 9:45 that we would hear it all in English. One of our friends did bring the matter up upon our departure from the building but it was kind of laughed at. I do think that staff should make people aware of the English and German speaking times. 4. 4.5 Deutsches Marinemuseum Wilhelmshaven (394 reviews)
    - A great musuem to visit if you are into history and naval warfare
    Speciality Museums
    Deutsches Marinemuseum Wilhelmshaven image
The admission is free of charge, if you are wearing a service uniform or have a valid military service ID ready, otherwise, the entry costs 14 € for adults. It is located in an easy to reach place. It will probably take 2-3 hours to complete the full tour around all of the ships (and there are at least 5 you can get on or in (in the case of the submarine)). The enjoyment is amplified if you actually know a little about the navy. The ships are from slightly different service periods, therefore it is interesting to note the layout and equipment differences between them. See more..
  5. 4.5 Deutsches Panzermuseum (374 reviews)
    - Must visit for anyone interested in armoured warfare
Sunday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Speciality Museums
    Deutsches Panzermuseum image
A museum covering virtually the whole history of German armoured from the First World War to modern equipment of the Bundeswehr. Being a Second World War history buff, I was most fascinated with the tanks of the era. Amongst the tanks on display are the Panther, Tiger, and King Tiger. It’s a must visit for any military history buff; admission is 8€, there is a small and limited gift store. Give yourself at least two hours to do the place justice. Masks are currently recommended but not required. See more..
  6. 4.0 German Salt Museum (184 reviews)
    - Such a good idea
Sunday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums
    German Salt Museum image
So, this is a museum about salt, and they're rightly very proud of that. As a non-German speaker you need to pay for audioguides that are sometimes very silly (with canned laughter, clapping etc) as everything is written in German. During covid-19 some things were naturally not possible, and perhaps some things were that shouldn't have been (multiple "touch stations"). You can learn a lot about the importance of salt. Very interactive, architecturally stunning, free parking in front, next to the top local fish restaurant, this new museum features exhibits focused on going to sea from the very harbor it's at. The personalization of the life and fate of sailors is really impressive. Very strong focus on kids, who all loved it and were really excited. 10. 4.0 Varusschlacht Museum und Park (108 reviews)
    - Great visit but a little reading beforehand makes it even better
    Speciality Museums
    Varusschlacht Museum und Park image
I stayed in Minden and it’s bit over an hour on the autobahn to get there. The Varusschlacht is where archaeological finds were made suggesting a Roman encampment and the possible site of the Teutoburg Forest battle. The site and museum is well organized with plenty of items found on display including Roman coins, remnants of shields and arrowheads. The museum is housed in a watchtower which provides an overview of the lay of the land and of the battlefield. There is also a gift store and cafeteria nearby as well. A lot of the displays are in German only but there are some English translations. This was no issue but a tip: if you’re not familiar with what happened, you should do a little research as the information provided likely won’t paint a complete picture. In all, it was a great day out to get see the countryside and the likely site of one of the most important battles fought in the ancient world was a great thrill. Any student in history would get a similar thrill See more..

We were with a large group that toured this lovely and unusual museum. When I think about tea, my thoughts go to England and Holland. The Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum is one of Europe's oldest art museums. The name reminiscents of Anthony Ulrich, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. He acquired the major part of the high-class collection: the precious paintings - amongst them works by Giorgione, Rubens, Rembrandt and Jan Vermeer van Delft - as well as the biggest collection of Italian majolica-ceramics north of the Alps, more than 200 exemplars of french enamel paintings as well as a remarkable collection of Eastern Asian artworks. Speciality Museums
    Heimatmuseum Dykhus image
This museum, a small kilometer from the city centre, is a varied museum, containing several well preserved pieces on the cultural and natural history. In my experience it was a well organised and very neat museum with a great variety of pieces across its small surface. The only thing I would like to stress is that the English information lacks. There is only a lot of German information. Most of the times an educated guess is enough to see what something is, however, more English information would improve this venue for visitors from outside Germany. See more..
  17. 4.5 Felix Nussbaum Haus (87 reviews)
    - A must see!!
    Speciality Museums
    Felix Nussbaum Haus image
Felix Nussbaum Haus – “A museum without Exit”by architect Daniel Libeskind. The Art museum is dedicated to the life and works of the German-Juwish Surrealist, killed at Auschwitz. Very interesting and must see concept together with Cultural History Museum (former Villa Schlicker of industrial tycoon, then NSDAP HQ until 1945). The Nussbaum Haus is asymmetrical with sloping corridors, odd windows, and strange sounds giving the visitor a friable feeling of disorientation; imitating the painters feeling under the NS regime or at the concentration camp. Nussbaum might not be famous, but his paintings and the building structure giving the visitor a glimpse into his tragic life. Before visiting do a bit of research or read the history of Nussbaum by the Belgian author Marc Schaevers. The audio guide is helpful. See more..

I loved this little museum for the interesting history about Goslar and the impressive toy soldier dioramas. The free audio guide in English or German which comes with the four Euro adult entrance fee provides a lot of background on the history of the city, which is also told throughout the different displays which are very well done. My favorite dioramas was the series on the Thirty Years War, especially one of an immense battlefield which had hundreds of figures. You can also buy some figures or even some mini dioramas at the museum shop.. I only wish I had a little more time and started our day in Goslar here in order to get the historical background first. How could I've skipped the Wilhelm Bush Museum being in his hometown? I learned of his art when I lived in Munich years ago and my philosophy professor, Karl Jaspers, gave me one of Bush's children caricature books for Christmas. I still gab the book at home; but, oh my, looking at his drawings at this Hannover museum was indeed a journey. Some drawings are so so funny, those roundish faced with pacifiers, those tricky acts, those great sketches of people you don't know but it doesn't matter: just enjoy the lines. Caricature along with satire is a wonderful way to see the other side of common place. I went twice and will return. Try it out! See more..

The Horst Janssen Museum is dedicated to the visual arts on paper. It is named after the great North German draughtsman, etcher, woodcutter, poster artist, illustrator, author and graphic artist Horst Janssen. The museum offers an exciting encounter with the work and personality of this idiosyncratic artist. The focus is on drawing as a universal means of human expression. In addition to the art of Horst Janssen, we and our guests are interested in the classical and contemporary trends in this genre. Furthermore, we will examine how, for example, digital tools can change drawing, what drawing can be all about or what individual understanding artists have of it. See more..

The Bünting Tea Museum was founded in 2001 with the aim of bringing the historical and social significance of East Frisian tea culture to life. For the Bünting Group of Companies, the Tea Museum expresses its solidarity with the values and traditions of the region as well as its own history. For the museum, a location with special significance was logically chosen: in the middle of the beautiful historic old town of Leers. Just two houses down - at Brunnenstraße 37 - Johann Bünting founded his small grocery store in 1806. The fine offer of tea, coffee, tobacco and spices formed the foundation for later development into a major trading company. See more..
