Historic Mining Museum

We visited as we were interested in seeing what my wife's ancestors may have had to deal with. There were no English tours that day so we chose to go with the German tour. While we didn't understand what he was saying, the guide was very hands on with demonstrations, asking kids to do some tasks, so the language barrier was a challenge we were still glad we took it. The museum and tour into the mine were very eye opening as to what the workers had to deal with in the early mines in the area. We felt safe in the mine. Would suggest a visit if in the area.

    Exiting and educative
We visited the Bergwerksmuseum in December 2014 with our children (11 and 12). The Museum is close to the Main Bus Station (ZOB) - about 5-10 Minutes Walk. In Front of the Museum is a small Café, were the kids enjoyed a big plate of fries (chips, french fries) for only 2,00 Euro. The Museum consists of a Building with demonstrages old Mining-Techniques, Items from the everyday-life of a working class miner. But the best thing is the mine-gallery that is build for visitors. The Tour you can book a the museum will take you through the exibition of the main building and then through the tunnel. Once inside the tunnel, it is like beeing in a mine. all dark, with mannequins demonstrating the different tasks of a miner. the tour lastet about one hour and we were all glad that we live in these modern times and are not miners. The tour-guide was very friendly and answered all our questions. We learned a lot of intersting things. The hotel was even so nice, to start this tour for us at a not scheduled time, so that we could get our bus. At the back of the Museum is another very nice Cafe "Stilbruch" where very nice cakes may be purchased. Show your museum-ticket and enjoy a 1,--€ price Reduction for a piece of cake. The furniture of the cafe is wonderfully prewar oldfashioned! Children under 6 years may find the mine-gallery scary and/or boring.
