I enjoyed very much my time spent at Maschsee although weather was not the best for outdoor activities. It is an artificial lake in a walking distance from the city center, suitable for all possible free time activities. It was built in 30th last century and one can identify sign of it. Especially the colummn with Olympic torch runner on its top takes a breath away and scare a bit at the other hand knowing in what intention such monuments were built and what followed. Anyway it makes this place not only recreation area but also historical place worth a more research.See more..

This is truly one of the quaintest fishing harbours on the North Sea of Germany. There are a number of restaurants and hotels right on the water's edge - as I write one of the major hotels is being rebuilt. There is a bronze statue of two fishermen looking out over the fishing boats. The funny thing is that the one statue of the fisher leaning over looking out across all the boats has a shiny spot on his bottom. I don't know why but so many people go up to this statue and tap him on the backside. It's a thing somehow.See more..

Maybe it was the rather dull weather, maybe it was the fact that I thought it would be the size of Lake Constance (Bodensee) - or that I thought this area would be akin to the English Lake District, but the name “Grosses Meer” is a misnomer. It’s not THAT big. Looking at the windsurfing, the learner students could stand in the middle of the Lake. Since this is the only attraction in the area (other than the North Sea coast) this gets rather crowded if and when the sun shines. Cycling around the lake is a good idea and so is walking around it. Die Rhumequelle in Südniedersachsen ist auf jeden Fall einen Umweg wert. Man erreicht sie leicht von Göttingen, Northeim oder Duderstadt aus. Hier entspringt aus der Quelle ein fertiger Fluß, eben die Rhume. Man sieht, wie das Wasser aus der Tiefe quillt. Der Ort ist sehr romantisch, und ein Spaziergang um die Quelle lohnt sich auf jeden Fall. Auch Wanderungen in der näheren Umgebung sind lohnend. Wir waren im November 2019 mal wieder da. Im Sommer ist es natürlich noch schöner. Leider sind die spärlichen Anlagen (Hinweisschilder, Stege, Informationskiosk) sehr verwahrlost und ungepflegt, daher ein Punkt Abzug.See more..

Behind the train station of Walkenried , there are hidden trails to some lakes. It is hard to discover by eyes but u will see 5,6 lakes on map. Actually they are connected. The easiest way to get to the sources of Schunter is either to walk from camping in Rabke or to park your car at the little hikers parking lot near former restaurant Zur Schunterquelle, then cross the road and follow the the trail number 12. In a few minutes of walking on comfortable pedestrian road you will reach a little nature wonder. Schunter has several sources which create here a beautiful scenery. Depending on your mood and time you can either continue hiking on of several marked trails or turn back and walk along the little newly born river up to the Schunter lake behind recreation park in Rabke. Den Besucher erwartet neben großen Grasliegeflächen mit zum Teil Sonnensegeln und Sonnenschirmen eine Schwimmbahn von 50 m Länge, ein naturnah gestalteter Sprungturm und eine auslaufende bekieste Flachwasserzone.
Das Wasser wird nicht gechlort oder beheizt, sondern wird u.a. über einen nahe gelegenen Teich biologisch gereinigt und ist deshalb natürlich kühl und leicht grünlich, ist aber völlig rein. Mehr zu den Reinigungsprozessen hier.
Zum Bade- und Spielspass tragen auch eine Badeinsel und ein Spielbach bei.
Rund um die Liegewiesen finden sich ausreichend Schattenplätze unter den Bäumen.See more..

It is possible to start a walk to the sources of Lutter either from Kaiserdom or from the big hikers parking just a few steps from the biggest spring with a romantic spring house building. Then you can follow educational trail with many information panels and leading through breathtaking nature following other sources of the river Lutter. The trail is not long. It took me about 30 minutes with many stops for taking pictures or just enjoying beautiful views. If you have enough time and feel like more walking you can continue on any of several marked hiking trails around. There is a restaurant close to the spring house. It was closed at the time of my visit. This spring is source of drinking water for Konigslutter so follow the rules and don't step where it is not allowed that the water doesn't contaminated.See more..

This real hidden gem is located about 15 minutes of driving from Helmstedt in the village Buddenstedt. It is flooded former opencast mine with beautiful nature and incredible number of various kinds of birds. There are three lakes - Anna Sued, Anna Nord and Caroline next to each other. Trails around the lakes are not marked but it is not possible to get lost. You will find several benches to relax and watch the breathtaking nature. It is possible to drive directly to the lakes, there several parking lots but the roads leading there are not in a good condition. I personaly parked my car at the little parking next to Plastic Omnium company parking and walked on the dirt road leading to the waste water treatment station (follow the arrow pointing to Klaranlage). After about 700 m of enjoyble walking in the fields I arrived to Anna Sued.See more..

The lake itself is not really intersting. It apparently used to be much bigger, currently it is a little puddle. I was able to make some nice pictures though but wouldn't drive there jsut because of this again. This place is more famouse of the rhododendrons park. My visit was too early, they were not blooming yet but seeing so many plants of many kinds I assume it must be beautiful in the season and I will definitelly come back later to see it. Another intersting thing on the lake shore are grave stones from stone age. There is no official parking lot near the lake. I parked at the dirty road next to the lake. It is apparently used by visitors and there is a space for about 3 cars to park without blocking the road.See more..
