Beautiful little castle in a park. Free parking and no charge to walk around the castle. With the sun in the early afternoon pictures are great. We did not enter the castle. It was open though with additional measures due to covid19.See more..
Among other memorials of relatively famous artists, such as Fritz Mackensen e.g., Paula Modersohn-Becker's grave is well worth a visit. It is a well-preserved piece of art. The churchyard is maintained in good order and invites the guests to stroll. See more..

Besides Bergen Belsen there were several other camps for soviet prisoners of war and they also have their own cemeteries. One of them can be found close to Wietzendorf. It is located in the military area in the middle of woods but accesible for civilian visitors. There is a main gate close to the road leading through the military area with a little parking lot. But signs on the road from Wietzenburg (along the lake Sudsee) navigated me to the rear entrance. Driving on the narrow dirty road I doubted for a while if it is a right way but after a few minutes I found a little parking about 300 meters from the cemetery. The cemetery itself is very nice, well kept and it is definitelly worth a visit if you are interested in a war history.See more..

Wir sind mit dem Fahrrad die Ems entlang gefahren, und von dort den Hinweisschildern nach Lathen gefolgt. Ehe wir in den Ortskern von Lathen ankamen, sind wir an einen Kriegerdenkmal vorbeigekommen. Solche Gedenkstätten, sind Mahnmahle aus der noch gar nicht so lange zurückliegenden, Vergangenheit. Wir, leben zum Glück, in einer für uns, kriegfreien Zeit. Solche Gedenkstätten und Mahnmahle, haben wir sehr oft in den Ortschaften, kleinen Städten und Dörfern an der Ems angetroffen.
Ich habe mir diese Gedenkstätte angeschaut. Dieses Gefallenendenkmal in Lathen, ist ein Gemeinschaftsehrenmal der Ortschaften: Lathen Fresenburg Düthe Mehlstrup Kathen Fackel, und Hilter
Drei Gedenksteine sind hier aufgestellt worden Sie sind den Gefallenen und Vermisten der Weltkriege, aus den benannten Ortschaften, zum Andenken errichtet worden.
Unseren gefallenen Brüdern 1914 - 1918 ist auf dem mittleren Gedenkstein zu lesen. Links und rechts, zum ersten Weltkriegs-Gedenkstein, wird an die Gefallenen und Vermisten der Jahrgänge 1939 - 1945 erinnert.
Solche Gedenkstätten dürfen nicht ignoriert werden, sie erinnern an großes Leid, das über ganz Deutschland seine Spuren hinterlassen hat..... Wer gerne historische Stätten besucht, sollte auch an so einer Gedenkstätte einmal anhalten, und dankbar sein, das es uns Gut geht.....See more..
This memorial commemorates a tragic event at the end of WWII when about fifty people died during an American air attack. Most of them were kids between four and six years old from children's home, paradoxically moved here to be safer than in a big city. Victims were burried here and later this nice memorial was built at the same place. It can be found next to the Friedwald parking lot in Langeleben and it is definitelly worth a stop. The former children's house can be found across the road and serves currently as a senior's care house.See more..
