  1. 4.5 Burg Bentheim (456 reviews)
    - One of those hidden gems!
Monday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Points of Interest & Landmarks • Castles
    Burg Bentheim image
We found this place by a pure chance, and we felt so lucky! The castle is beautiful and well-preserved, and it has amazing views on the town and the park. It is also suitable to visit with children. The entrance fee is about 5 euros per person which is cheap comparing to other, more well-known castles. There are also less visitors there so it would be a perfect place for someone who loves history/architecture and can't stand crowds. There are also plenty of nice cafes nearby, and the town itself is marvelous. I would definitely recommend it as a day trip, and I am going to visit there again! See more..
  2. 4.0 Herzogschloss Celle (264 reviews)
    - Fantastic Day Out In Celle, Neider-Sachsen, Germany !!
    Castles
    Herzogschloss Celle image
I visited Celle with my family August 30 2012 and found the old town, a step back in time just adorable. Celle is over 700 years old with streets of half timber houses. We visited the many attractions in and around Celle, not least the Herzogschloss, which is an amazing building. Entry fee €5,00 euros (adult). Open Tuesday - Sunday 10.00hr - 17.00hr. There is ample parking either on street or multi-storey, which is cheap. I paid €3,00 euros for a little over 3 hours. Celle lends itself for a relaxing day out, with cafe bars and restaurants in abundance. There is a fish restaurant for many fish dishes and snacks, including fish and chips, to sit in or just outside. To sum, I was pleasantly surprised and an excellent day out was had, with many good photograph opportunities. See more..
  3. 4.5 Marienburg Castle (239 reviews)
    - Neuschwanstein of the North! Beautiful!
    Monday: Spent 1-2 hours Castles
    Marienburg Castle image
When King George V (1819 - 1878) of Hanover once made Marienburg Castle a present to his wife, Queen Marie (1818 - 1907), he had no idea that his proof of love would one day be one of the most impressive architectural monuments in Germany. The design of Marienburg Palace is reminiscent of a medieval hilltop castle. Its fairytale appearance originates from the Queen's wish for a romantic summer residence. Today Marienburg Castle has become all that Queen Marie had always dreamed of: a centre for music, art and culture. The castle impresses with its almost completely preserved interior decdecoration and its extensive exterior appearance. All year round you can explore the castle and its many fascinating features. Various guided tours and changing thematic topics in the castle and exhibition rooms will give you an insight into an outstanding building of the neo-Gothic architectural style as well as into the eventful history of the Guelphs. 4. 4.5 Schloss Buckeburg (133 reviews)
    - 1300's Castle and Grounds to explore
Monday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Castles
    Schloss Buckeburg image
A castle that is dreamily reflected in the water, a park of over 80 hectares, the old town right next door - all this invites you to linger. For over 700 years Buckeburg Castle has been a living mirror of the times. Around the 13th century, the castle Buckeburg was first mentioned under the name "buckeborch" as a residential and defense tower. It served to guard an important long-distance trade route that led from the Baltic to the Rhine. The sixteenth century (1560-1620) had the greatest impact on Schloss Buckeburg: The medieval fortification developed into a splendid Renaissance castle. Then, in the 18th century (1732), the facades and interiors were redesigned in Baroque style. Discover an elapsed glittering time on one of the numerous castle tours. See more..
  5. 3.5 Heidekastell Iserhatsche (94 reviews)
    - Absolutely a Must See!!!
    Castles
    Heidekastell Iserhatsche image
I happened to find this attraction by accident while doing my research for our trip. The description sounded kind of "kitchy" so we really had no idea what we would find. We are soooo happy we went out of the way to visit this absolutely amazing site. As another reviewer state, it is next to impossible to describe Iserhatsche as I have never seen anything like it. I don't believe they get very many English speaking tourists here as it was all in German but I would never let that stop you from visiting and viewing these amazing collections. We did the full tour which I would highly recommend. So many photo opportunities if you are so inclined. Do not miss this!! See more..

  7. 4.0 Schloss Ritzebuettel (81 reviews)
    - Simply Beautiful
    Castles
    Schloss Ritzebuettel image
We attended civil wedding at the Ritzebuettel castle and it is just beautiful. The castle consists of a large red brick tower built in the middle ages and a red brick baroque era addition placed in front of the tower, giving it more of a home appearance. After a lengthy restoration, the rooms were re-opened in 1996. Period furniture, decorative plaster ceilings, stained lead glass windows and fine wood carvings are presented beautifully here. The building is also used for art exhibits. See more..

  9. 4.0 Schloss Wolfsburg (70 reviews)
    - Worth a visit
    Monday: Castles
    Schloss Wolfsburg image
We had finished at the vw museum and wanted something else to do, so we found this on the sat nav and went for it. It was free to get in, free parking. They are doing work on it at the moment, but was still a lovely place to visit even when it was raining. Be aware that the signs in the castle are in German, but in the museum area they have they have the write ups in English as well as German. The lady in the museum spoke a little English and was more than friendly. They also have a lovely restaurant on site and serves lovely coffee and cake. We learnt more about the history of Wolfsberg and VW here than at the VW museum. Well worth a visit as it has so much history and things to look at See more..

    - EXCELLENT Tour and Guide

    Schloss Haemelschenburg image
We arrived for the 12 md tour, as we speak only a little German and the tour is only in German, we were given an English translation before going on the tour. There we 6 visitors on the tour, so plenty of time to look and chat. Our guide spoke very good English, and after delivering the German presentation she checked we had followed in our scripts, she also added further information which was not in the script. I would highly recommend a visit here. You can only visit as part of a guided tour, our tour guide was amazing. A big THANK YOU. See more..

Alles in allem eine TOP-Veranstaltung und für 9,00 Euro pro Person absolut empfehlenswert!!! See more..
  15. 3.5 Schlossmuseum Braunschweig (25 reviews)
    - A must see for coin enthusiasts
    Monday: Castles
    Schlossmuseum Braunschweig image
This museum, carved out from a shopping centre in the erstwhile ducal palace, has a few rooms only, of which a reconstruction of the throne rooms may be the most spectacular. Otherwise, it is a bit bland, with the computer presentations in the "dining room" suffering from computer errors, missing pictures and even a pair of picture/caption mismatches (a statue described as a painting and vice versa) and repetitive. However, coin enthusiasts must see the temporary (until March 2017) exhibition "Schatzkammer Harz", featuring a jaw-dropping collection of coins and Schau-thalers (big silver medals with a coin denominations). This feature alone would have earned it an extra star if it had been part of the permanent exhibit. Let's hope the museum can keep up the quality of the temporary exhibitions. See more..

The Residenze Museum is located inside the Celler Schloss (Celle castle). It has good history dating back to the 14th century. Easy to walk around and accessible for all mobilities, kid and family friendly. Adult prices are only 8€ but I recommend the guided tour, which is only 9€, only 1€ difference. The guided tour gets you in the Schlosstheatre and the chapel, where as self guided, you cannot go into the theatre or chapel. See more..
  18. 4.5 Schloss Gifhorn (Gifhorn Castle) (15 reviews)
    - Wedding Reception - lovely venue, delicious food, exceptional service.
    Monday: Castles
    Schloss Gifhorn (Gifhorn Castle) image
Attended a wedding reception in June, and every detail seemed perfect. The champagne welcome was held on a lower level, and the ballroom upstairs where the meal and dancing was held comfortably fit about 80 people with a dance floor, and serving tables. The features of the room added to the beauty of the photographs. It was light and spacious with historic charm. See more..

    Kulturzentrum Weserrenaissance Schloss Bevern image
See more..

Lovely, quiet place with a really old tower from XV century. Now looks better than 3 years ago, because it has been renovated. Nice walk around the tower, you don't need more than 30 minutes if you can't visit inside. We are alwayes in this place during winter, so only outside walk is possible. If you are on the neighbourhood it is worth of visiting. See more..

    Royal palace of Werla image
The parking was almost full so I was afraid that the place will be crowded but it wasn't that bad. The ground is big and there is more interesting stuff than the reconstructed part of the castle so the visitors were distributed and the visit was enjoyble with no disturbance or waiting. There are plenty of information panels about the castle and its history, about country's history, about prehistory of this place, geology and nature. Plus amazing views not only from the tower. I really liked it there and it was hard to leave. Parking lot is about 500 meters far from the castle. The trail is very comfortable lined with the stones with info panels about the castle history so it makes already a lot of fun. There are also two chemical toilets available close to castle. Surprisingly they were very clean. Entrance is free. I can truly recommend a visit there. Plan a lot of time. See more..

    - A Forgotten Castle Battling Its Survival
Monday: 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Castles
    Castle Lauenau image
It’s a ’hidden’ glory covered by the dust of the time. It is a castle built in the 16th century on the remains of a water castle from the 12th century. Once a domain for dukes, earls, marquises, royalties and nobilities, it is now privately owned since 1950. The attempt to sell the castle again failed in 1991. Since then, it has been rented. The water castle, as usual, was built on oak piles, which became unstable over time. Therefore, in 1727, lateral support pillars were erected to relieve the oak piles. We met the current occupants to get more information and history of this castle. It was built on the foundation walls of the destroyed Wasserburg and erected as a four-wing facility with two floors. On three sides, it was also surrounded by a moat. The castle is rented today and needs renovation. According to my information, a visit to the castle is unfortunately not possible, but possibly at least an outside inspection from the public road. One of the old remnants of the castle is a 200-year old tree with a stem circumference of over 5 m and is about 12 m high. There is sign plate notice “Private property - Access only by prior arrangement”. This indicates that a visit is possible if arranged in advance. See more..
