Internationales Wind- und Wassermuehlen-Museum, Lower Saxony, Germany

4.5 (39 reviews) Spent Ranking #2 in Gifhorn Speciality Museums

One of a kind museum

The museum is probably the best in the world. It features water and windmills from all over the world. The open air water and windmilsl are exact replicas or the real windmills like the one from Korea. The museums inside has miniature windmilsl from many countries dating back hundreds of years. Each one explains its purpose, age and history. You must be able to read German, duplicating the explanations in English would clutter the museum.

    Surprisely beautiful
We have noticed the windmills from the car on our journey to tge Autostadt. It took our attention so we decided to come back the next day. 10 euro entrance looked a bit high but finally we were glad we've gone in. There are windmills in real size from all the world located on the bank of a nice lake. Most of them are windmills, some watermills. There is also an exhibition from the country of origin in some of them. In the center of the area is museum, where lots and lots of small size mils are on display. All the objects are explained, but unfortunatelly only in German, also brochures are available only in German, which is a big pitty. We took a small light lunch at the restaurant, it was very nice, bread and cake both freshly baked at the place. Don't forget to visit Orthodox church (+2.5 euro), where is another exhibition of different styles of orthodox churches. The place really worth visiting.

    Relaxing afternoon
Our teen was very unsure as to whether this was a good place to go, but at the end she gave it 4/5. Our younger daughter (9) loved it. A clean, well laid out site with original and replica windmills from all over the world. We loved it. You can go inside most of the windmills, although there is no wheelchair access into quite a few of them due to steps. There is also a fantastic collection of over 50 model windmills, all about 1m tall. Small shop. Lovely restaurant. Everything is in German, no English although the staff were helpful. Great way to spend a relaxing afternoon.
