  8. 4.5 Hermann-Grima House (502 reviews)
    - Excellent tour - highly recommend
Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • History Museums
    Hermann-Grima House image
This restored French Quarter home built in 1831, includes a Federalist architectural façade, original operating open-hearth kitchen, urban slave quarters, and expansive courtyard. The Urban Enslavement Tour at Hermann-Grima House, looks at the experiences of those who were enslaved in an urban setting, how that differed from those enslaved in rural settings, and how the contributions of people of African descent have shaped New Orleans. Condé Nast Traveler voted it one of the best tours in New Orleans and the only tour listed from a museum. We believe that nothing tells a story like a home. In addition, the property’s 19th-century carriage house is home to the The Exchange Shop, originally founded in the 1881 by The Woman’s Exchange and one of the oldest women-led non-profits in the South. 9. 4.0 Nottoway Plantation (482 reviews)
    - The South’s most Magnificent Mansion!
    Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites
    Nottoway Plantation image
A magnificent mansion house sitting overlooking the Mississippi River. Over 150 years old, it’s steeped in American history, Greek styling and Italian influences, with 15 foot high ceilings and a semi-circular white ballroom with Corinthian panels and hand cast archways. The guided tour was extremely informative if a little long and over self-indulgent by the guide/actor, who even shed a tear when thanking us all for coming (well I suppose it helps encourage the tips….) but nonetheless it was well worth a couple of hours of our time. Super gardens too. See more..

    Rip Van Winkle Gardens image
I decided to visit the gardens on a mild January day. Many of the plants were damaged from the recent freezing weather, but this is still a peaceful and relaxing getaway for a couple of hours. I can’t wait to come back in the spring. The peacocks are fun to watch and add some additional color and beauty to the place. The lady at the gift shop said that there are about 50 of them on the grounds! I didn’t do the house tour, but plan to do so on my next visit. Same with the restaurant. See more..

    - A Beautiful Small Town
    Historic Sites
    Historic District Shopping image
We visited the Visitors Center first, then took our brochures and went to the StoryBrew Coffee Cafe, ordered our drinks and pastries and began planning our day. We left and walked down to the Beau Jardin and the Cane River Lake. We couldn't go into the Roque House, but got some pictures through the windows. Back up to the street, with brochure in hand, we began the Historic Natchitoches walking tour. We visited the Kaffie-Frederick, Inc. General Mercantile - the quintessential hardware store complete with an older man in overalls sitting on a large spool chatting with the store clerk! After the walking tour we drove over to the American Cemetery. We were amazed at how old some of the graves are, fortunately the grave markers were made of metal so they have not rotted or worn away. Later we got lunch at Lacyone's Meat Pies, then drove around to the homes from the movie Steel Magnolias. See more..

    San Francisco Plantation image
I toured beautiful and unique San Francisco Plantation on July 25th with a friend. We drove down from Natchez. I thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the experience. Our tour guide was Ruby. Historic Sites
    Oakley Plantation image
After visiting a couple of other plantations in the area that were totally mind-blowing, I was a little disappointed in this plantation. Not a lot of artifacts in the home and at least one third of the tour guides presentation was about Audubon which only visited the plantation for 4 months. The history the past 200 years should be more important than a 4 month visit even if the person had become famous. See more..

What a great stop on our trip from New Orleans to Vicksburg. The site of the battle of Port Hudson is well preserved with a great little museum. Some of the exhibits including cannons and the Confederate Flag were actually present at the long siege. The park also has miles of excellent hiking trails and a board walk around the confederate earth fortifications. Caddo Parish Confederate Monument image
This is a great piece of art located on a downtown public square in front of the courthouse for the local county (parish). What may be controversial to some of my friends in Boston, I find this monument as a reminder to local families that want to honor their ancestors who, in their minds, gave their all in fighting for their rights to defend their families and property. All American veterans should be honored in such a way regardless of how current events or philosophies may wish to alter history. See more..
  39. 4.0 Fort Jackson (25 reviews)
    - Great chunk of history
    Historic Sites
    Fort Jackson image
This is a great chunk of history. However, you can only drive around it. There is not public access due to the deteriorated conditions of the fort structure. About all you can do is get photos of the outer wall and the moat. You can get a shot through the main gate into the grounds, that’s about it. Still, it is a historic spot based on the construction following the War of 1812 and the use it served during the American Civil War. I would love to know more about the history of what appears to be a concrete coastal artillery battery overlooking the river on the level. I would think this might have been constructed while the fort was used for training in WWI. I know restoration and preservation is expensive, but I would love to see this landmark restored to allow public entry. We had to give it 3 stars based on the lack of access when it should have been 4 or 5 stars. The La Salle Monument nearby also appears to be in disrepair. See more..
