From its beginnings over 200 years ago, Oak Alley was just a land claim on a map. Today, Oak Alley is a National Historic Landmark, dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history its inhabitants left behind. With an emphasis on its time as a sugar plantation, visitors are invited to walk under its iconic alley, explore its exhibits: Slavery at Oak Alley, the ‘Big House’, Sugarcane Theater, People of Oak Alley and the Blacksmith Shop and leave with a better understanding of this plantation’s complex history. St. Joseph Church and Gardens image
We have been members for a number of years. It is a beautiful church in a lovely old neighborhood that is very vibrant. It is an historical area only minutes from the French Quarter in New Orleans. Mass is 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30 on Sundays. The church was designed by a German architect that was well known in New Orleans. Old Gretna was settled by Germans and has a German Cultural Center. In the surrounding area, there are several good restaurants, a Saturday farmers market and it is only 6 blocks from the river where you can sit and watch the ships pass or ride a bike on the levee between the Gretna Ferry landing and the Algiers Ferry landing on The Point. Very interesting area historical area and beautiful church where you can be welcomed and enjoy a lovely mass. See more..

  6. 5.0 1811 Kid Ory Historic House (8 reviews)
    - Fantastic museum a short drive from downtown New Orleans. Covers early jazz history and the 1811 slave uprising.

1811 Kid Ory Historic House image
I finally made it out to Kid Ory Historic House. A 40 minute drive from downtown New Orleans, I recommend this place highly. This tour covers early jazz in New Orleans focusing on one of a New Orleans greatest and most influential musicians. In addition to learning about this , the Woodland Plantation was the site of the 1811 Uprising of the Enslaved that I had very little knowledge of. Well done! Worth your time. See more..
  7. 5.0 St. Joseph Co-Cathedral (5 reviews)
    - Beautiful and historical!

    St. Joseph Co-Cathedral image
I was surprised to see no reviews on this church. It is a spiritual place and an architectural work of art both inside and out, designed in the Renaissance Romanesque style of Europe. I very much enjoy taking pictures of historic buildings and this was an excellent choice. My preference is to take those of catholic churches and since times have changed and many churches have to lock their doors for security, I try to arrive a half hour to an hour before mass time. That way I can take photos around the building and inside, without disturbing those that are praying. Usually I participate in the mass; that way I can not only get the spiritual effect, but it also allows me time to absorb the intricate craft and design inside the building. Of course with all the stained glass windows, statues, lights, etc., it is hard to see and appreciate everything in an hour or two, but it is well worth a visit! See more..
  8. 5.0 Palo Alto (3 reviews)
    - Visiting the area
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings
This was a great experience. It is an early 19th Century plantation home, not one of the really spectacular ones, but very beautiful. They have one guest room. It is classified as a "bed and breakfast," but they did not actually serve breakfast, so I guess it's not. We did not take a tour of the place, but we did book the room for an evening. Very nice, quiet place to stay. See more..

Julien Poydras Museum and Arts Center image
This old High School is a beautiful building that you can visit the grounds and see the inside if anyone is there. There are usually activities going on in the building during the weekend. They even rent out the old school rooms for events and businesses. It is ran by the Pointe Coupee Historical Society and there are many historical books that you can purchase there. There is a monument and grave of the Julien Poydras in the front of the building. It is a beautiful place. See more..

    Heritage Village image
Heritage Village of Benton contains an excellent collection of small historical buildings and artifacts. The collection and exhibits offer far more to the visitor than the better known Pioneer Heritage Center on the LSUS campus in Shreveport. See more..
  11. 4.0 Fort Proctor (2 reviews)
    - Fort Proctor and Shell Beach
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
    Fort Proctor image
My husband and I drove to Shell Beach to see Fort Proctor (also known as Fort Beauregard or Beauregard's Castle). Be sure to take highway 46 because highway 300 is closed halfway down the road. At Shell Beach, we wanted to see the fort that was across the Gulf Outlet canal. We were not disappointed. We could see the fort but even better with binoculars. The fort can be accessed by boat. At Shell Beach, there is no beach but the many canals and fishing boats were nice to see. We drove to the end of highway 624 and enjoyed seeing more canals and fishing boats. Some of the fisherman were sorting clams and shrimp then loading them into bags. That was interesting as well. See more..
  12. 3.0 Texas-Pacific Depot (1 review)
    - Part of Historical Downtown Gretna LA
    Architectural Buildings
This small historical depot currently houses a Postal Service sub-station. Their RR tracks were removed a number of years ago and T-P rail traffic was diverted to the Southern-Pacific track on Fourth Street, one block away. There is a small RR museum located in the intersection of Huey P. Long Ave. and Fourth Street. Several local restaurants are located along Huey P. Long Ave. between First Streets. A good view of the Mississippi River can be had from the River levee at HPL Ave. & First Street. See more..
  13. Silver Lake (0 review)
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings
    Silver Lake image
Built between 1849 and 1855, Silver Lake is a tradition plantation-style house, boasting four tall columns, a wide porch, and six fireplaces. Though of that style it was never part of a large plantation. The house was built on huge piers and sills, which uniquely includes a tree, 48ft.x24in. that supports the front part of the house. It is estimated that the tree started growing in 1755! See more..
