This is a great piece of art located on a downtown public square in front of the courthouse for the local county (parish). What may be controversial to some of my friends in Boston, I find this monument as a reminder to local families that want to honor their ancestors who, in their minds, gave their all in fighting for their rights to defend their families and property. All American veterans should be honored in such a way regardless of how current events or philosophies may wish to alter history.See more..
4.0Evangeline Monument(24 reviews) - Only go here if you know the story or are interested in history. Monuments & Statues
This is a very interesting stop but only a well read person would understand. The people who make statements like "it's just a statue" do not know the story of the Acadian people. This is the last part of a lesson about the Acadians, not a first stop. Take the time to read Longfellow's Evangeline. It is only about 1500 lines long. Even if you don't ever make it to this area that is a piece of literature that everyone should read. The church beside the monument is also fascinating with a great history of its' own. After doing some pre-reading go on a weekday and plan on spending an hour or two in this area. If you do not pre-read then hire a tour guide. Without knowing what you are looking at you may walk away saying "it's only a statue" or "the tree is closed".See more..
