I am adamant that I will NEVER visit a caged animal in a zoo. The beast part besides the animals running free, is you will be petting HUNDREDS of animals because you can feed them with pellets. Tuesday: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails
Creole Nature Trail Adventure Point image
This is a newer visitor's welcome center. I took my husband in to purchase a souvenier mug and was delighted to see a miniature museum about the food, music, wildlife, and culture of the area. Even my adult husband had a good time looking around and tinkering with the exhibits. GREAT for kids!!!! Its just a short 10-15 minute drive South down the highway to begin getting into the nature, marshy wildlife area. I suggest having some fun and doing what the locals do. Stop at Brown's grocery in Hackberry and pick up some raw chicken legs and some string. Ask the locals how to go CRABBING. Next, drive down to where you and the family find a bridge to drive your car over into a parking lot beside a wooden deck. Learn from the locals and visitors how to use your bait to catch a crab. Ya gotta bring some insect repellent, a few chairs, and your patience but I used to do this as a kid and have tons of fun. See more..
  10. 4.0 Mandalay National Wildlife Refuge (55 reviews)
    - Great Path to Nice raised Platform
    Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Mandalay National Wildlife Refuge image
We visited the Mandalay Refuge while in Houma for Voice of the Wetlands Music Fest. The path was everything you should expect. little standing water and fair amount of gravel to minimize the "mud"..worth every step when you get to observation platform to see the great open water and the birds around it.. Allow 30 to 60 minutes for walk in and out. Some poison ivy along the path so be aware. We had some cheap boots that allowed us to walk in/out without ruining our tennis shoes. Or wear shoes you don't mind washing once done. Mosquito spray before entering..We did see a gray snake run away from us.. some kind of "racer"... cool place with great birds and trail. and it is FREE... See more..
  11. 4.0 Bogue Chitto State Park (41 reviews)
    - Beautiful, quiet and relaxing destination
State Parks • Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Bogue Chitto State Park image
We took our camper trailer up to the state park this past weekend and had a great time. The upland campground was our spot and each location has a wood deck with a picnic table and fire ring (yes you can burn wood and have roasted marshmallows). The spaces are large and even have a tent pad in case you have friends with you. I really enjoyed that we were not on top of each other, you could enjoy the feeling of being in the outdoors. Their were plenty of options for recreation too: horseback riding, walking trails, bike trails, playgrounds, a small waterpark, fishing, canoeing, and picnic spots. The Dutch Oven club cooked in a covered pavilion and you could taste their foods at noon. They are there the 2nd weekend of each month. Great fun and value! See more..
  12. 4.5 Red River National Wildlife Refuge (38 reviews)
    - Highly recommended
Tuesday: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM Nature & Wildlife Areas
Red River National Wildlife Refuge image
My husband and I went to the Red River National Wildlife Refuge on a Tuesday afternoon. The visitor’s center was open but we did not go inside (Covid-19 times). The visitor’s center is nice on the outside. The backside of the building has a big porch with rocking chairs and a boardwalk that leads to Lake Caroline. There are ten trails in the refuge that range from 0.3 mile to 1.4 miles. Most of the trails start at the visitor's center. Lake Caroline is a great place to canoe or kayak. There are alligators in the lake but we did not see any. There is also a boat ramp and dock about a quarter mile south of the visitor’s center. There was lots of parking available. We are looking forward to a return trip someday. See more..
  13. 4.0 Lake End Park (30 reviews)
    - Respite from the cold
Tuesday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent More than 3 hours Beaches • Nature & Wildlife Areas • Parks
    Lake End Park image
Large park with lake access, small beach. Sites gravel, fairly level, large screened room not reservable so you risk having other people and kids in and out if you're having a get together there. The bathrooms and laundry are inside that same building. Bathrooms clean, rusty fixtures. Laundry definitely needs improvement. Most were out of order and washers didn't always drain completely. Staff nice. Nobody to keep the noise level down at night. Park is adjacent to a main road, so lots of street noise. See more..

The section off Hwy I-59 exit 11 (Pearl River Turnaround,) has been a Spring and Summertime favorite of mine since discovering it just a few years ago. The boardwalk there was recently extended, allowing for greater access through the area. Great for wildlife and for birding. There are also picnic tables under a shaded pavilion. Such a pretty place! 22. 4.5 Bonnet Carre Spillway (5 reviews)
    - A gem for birders
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Nature & Wildlife Areas
This place is amazing. Right in the middle of oil refineries and industry, its a gem for birding. we saw 6 species of raptors in the first 20 minutes and were serenaded by meadowlarks the whole time we were there. A word of caution, however, the map is not accurate since the spillway was opened in 2019. not really a problem because its all flat and you can see far, but there are pools and wet spots and the dirt roads on the map are not there any more, at least not that we could see. See more..
  23. 5.0 Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge (5 reviews)
    - What a multiuse refugee should be.
Tuesday: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM Nature & Wildlife Areas
Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge image
The staff were knowledgeable and friendly. Headquarters/visitor center well maintained with interesting and informative displays. Many hands on items for kids. Birds present where they suggested and in even greater variety. This was a return trip for me. I had been there in January. The staff was apologetic because all the areas were not open. It was their annual Handicap hunt day. How can you be upset by that. They did this up well also, multiple guides, ATV s to access hard to reach areas, and a light lunch. Great people, well maintained, given the current budget. Will be back. See more..

My daughter and I took a trip to the Shreveport area and decided to stay at the Mahaffey Farmhouse. It was such a nice change of pace. The owner/host is very sweet and accommodating. The farm is close to the city, if you need to go into town. However, we were content relaxing at the house. Another great thing about staying here is the farm-to-table breakfast that the host (Sandra) cooked. See more..

    - Nice trail leading to an observation area for Bird watching
Spent 1-2 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Parks • Hiking Trails
Grand Cote National Wildlife Refuge image
We went just to the Nature Trail but if you view their website you can see there are lots of other things to do. When you get to the trail you have two options, natural trail and a paved one, we chose the paved as the other was flooded. This goes on for about half a mile and leads you on to a wooden stair way that takes you to an observation post. It was quiet when we went but will definitely go back again when the weather gets a bit warmer as i'm sure there will be lots of birds to see. See more..

Yogi & Friends is open to the public on Saturday's only from 10am to 5pm. The co-owner was so friendly and helpful in providing information on the cats living at the sancturary. Although it really isn't much to look at from the exterior (we actually drove right past it) this really is a must see attraction while visiting Shreveport/Bossier City! See more..

    Pointe-Aux-Chenes Wildlife Refuge image
Although the whole place was flooded when we arrived so you really couldn't get to a good vantage point. It's a good thing people build their houses on stilts. We weren't visiting during odd weather; I think this is just the reality of the gulf coast now. See more..
  32. 4.0 Woodlands Conservancy Trail Area (2 reviews)
    - Quick Getaway to Enjoy Nature
Tuesday: 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Woodlands Conservancy Trail Area image
Since the weather was so gorgeous last weekend I googled "walking trails" and this popped up. It is a 30 minute drive from downtown NOLA and a nice little getaway. There is a small parking lot, bathroom access, and a picnic area with tables and a fire pit. We even met a guy who was doing research and he showed us a little bird that he had been tracking. The woods seem to have a lot of hurricane damage but it was still nice to be enjoying nature so close to the city. Also you may see some wild creatures. We saw a snake while there so don't let the kids wander off! See more..

Spent 1-2 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Parks • Hiking Trails
Arthur R Teague Multi-Use Trail image
My husband and I spent some time on the Arthur R Teague Multi-Use Trail. The entire trail is about 6.6 miles one way. There are three parking areas. The largest parking area has two boat ramps and a long sidewalk at the river’s edge. Several guys are fishing there and we had a picnic. The trail follows along the Red River but occasionally the trail get out of sight of the river. There are picnic tables, benches and restrooms on the trail. The trail is wide and the area is well mowed. The Red River National Wildlife Refuge is on the south end of the trail. The trail and parking is free. It is a nice park. See more..

We enjoyed a day on the water. There is a nice launch, the waterway is clean, calm, and easy to navigate. Bring sunscreen as there is almost no shade. Cane Bayou lets out into Lake Pontchartrain.
