    Greenwood Plantation image
My friend and I stayed here while we were on a two week road trip through Texas and Louisiana. I wanted to visit because I had seen the house in the TV mini series "North and South" and fell in love with it; it's even more breathtaking in person! We had the pleasure of meeting both resident cats (yes Minou did try and tell us he was allowed in our room, it was a shame we couldn't let him visit us inside). Julie was a wonderful hostess, she took excellent care of us at breakfast and when we toured the house. Her husband Hal was a character! It was interesting to hear the history of the house which includes it burning to the ground and being completely rebuilt in all its grandeur. In the evening they played Amazing Grace, Star Spangled Banner, and Taps from the main house - what a wonderful moment that was, surrounded by such beauty! 100% recommend visiting this place! This is a small but very well thought out museum. The artifacts, the stories they tell, and the beautiful grounds are all worth your time. Aaron, the interpreter there when we visited, was very friendly and knowledgeable. You should watch the video first, tour the museum, then take in the somber and serene grounds by walking the General Mouton Trail. History is alive here, and you would do well to experience it. 14. 4.0 Laurel Valley Village (43 reviews)
    - Full of Louisiana History
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Laurel Valley Village image
What a great little find! My Dad heard about Laurel in tv and so we decided to check it out. Laurel Valley was the largest sugar plantation in the country with over 5,000 acres at one time. Now, roughly 3,500 acres, it’s still a working plantation. The Lauren Valley Store/Museum offers a look back in history; chock full of antique tractors, sewing machines and the like. Take a stroll around the grounds near the store to see the outside tools up close and to feed chickens, pat a goat and see peacocks. Take a drive down a public road that goes right through the plantation. What a treat! See more..

Le Vieux Village de Poste des Opelousas image
This was a great little stop for Opelousas area history. The buildings and grounds are well taken care of and feature actual artifacts. Of particular interest is the “Venus House”, a residence dating back to the 1700’s and once home to a freed slave. All of the buildings are furnished and feature detailed descriptions of items. We loved the plants and flowers growing around the little village. There are plenty of benches for taking a break in the shade. There is a gift shop with a small collection of souvenirs. Will definitely return. See more..

The building is super cute. One shop in particular that I couldn’t get enough of had stained glass. The artist was there and so very friendly and helpful. She was sharing stories of her pieces, and even sharing techniques. She offers custom pieces and her prices were VERY reasonable. We purchased several things from her: Christmas ornaments, yard art and a piece that hangs from the window. We will be calling her for a custom piece soon as well. I HIGHLY recommend stopping by her shop. See more..
  19. 4.0 Donaldsonvillle (15 reviews)
    - A Louisiana Original , Ascension Catholic Cemetery
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Donaldsonvillle image
A little off the beaten path, a few blocks from the historic building district is the Ascension Catholic Cemetery. I know, cemeteries are not the most exciting places to visit, but if you always wanted to go to a "New Orleans" type cemetery without the New Orleans traffic, this place is for you. See how the movers and shakers from the antebellum period and area are forever entombed. Large gothic structures as well as interestingly designed smaller tombs are here. It is a large cemetery. One of the structures (Landry Tomb) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Open from sun up to dusk. Remember, this is a cemetery. See more..

  24. 3.0 Market Hall (6 reviews)
    - Quirky looking, but interesting
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Market Hall image
St. Francisville’s historic Market Hall was constructed in 1819 to provide a farmers market on the ground floor and a magistrate’s office on the upper floor. The result was a rather quirky-looking structure with an upper floor and a ground floor that seem badly mismatched. I do have to admit that the building is architecturally interesting, if not exactly handsome, and I’m glad it was restored in 1984. Today the lower floor of the building is apparently used for craft sales and the like. When our group visited Market Hall on a hot and humid weekday afternoon we found only four or five crafters displaying wares inside. My wife was delighted to find earrings made with Petoskey stones from northern Michigan, but there wasn’t enough variety on display (mostly earrings and specialty soap) to hold interest for very long. 25. 4.5 Bonnet Carre Spillway (5 reviews)
    - A gem for birders
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Nature & Wildlife Areas
This place is amazing. Right in the middle of oil refineries and industry, its a gem for birding. we saw 6 species of raptors in the first 20 minutes and were serenaded by meadowlarks the whole time we were there. A word of caution, however, the map is not accurate since the spillway was opened in 2019. not really a problem because its all flat and you can see far, but there are pools and wet spots and the dirt roads on the map are not there any more, at least not that we could see. Chapel of the Madonna - "Smallest Church in the World" image
This is on Hwy 405/River Rd and is nine miles South of Hwy 1 and is about 4 miles from Nottoway Plantation. I found it just driving around and saw a small sign on the two lane river road. The sign said smallest church in the world and drove by it twice before I saw it positioned in front of a cow field. We got out to take pictures and a nice gentleman next door doing yard work, said there is a key in the wooden box in front to enter the church. It had a prayer alter with candles you could light, post cards with chapel picture and story and a donation box. He said they actually held mass once a year in the church. See more..
  29. 5.0 International Boundary Marker (4 reviews)
    - God Bless Texas!
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    International Boundary Marker image
This is a must for all you Texas history buffs! The marker is just out side of town. As you cross the Sabine River from Texas into Louisiana go through Logansport and turn left on 764, about 3 miles north will be a left turn on to 765... go another 2 miles or so, park is on your right. The marker is just a small granite post marked RT on the west and US on the east, but think about what it represents! In 1841 as you walked past that little post you crossed from the United States of America into the REPUBLIC of TEXAS. Think about the families loaded in their ox drawn wagons leaving their homeland to join the young Lone Star nation to seek freedom and prosperity. I can imagine as they walked past this marker heading to their new land they may have stopped and looked west with a tear in their eye they bid farewell to the US and said a little prayer for the Republic. God Bless Texas See more..

    Roque House image
This was my second time visiting Natchitoches and the riverfront area. On my first trip, I was behind the house and didnt realize it was a historical landmark. I thought it was a building for maintenance work or a shed to hold supplies. The plaques and signs are in front of the house. On this 2020 trip, the house is off limits but seeing the plaque and sign this time, I spent more time looking at its architecture and pondering the decision to move it from the original site to its current location. The trees in front and directly behind it are beautiful. There are a few benches in the garden area behind the house. See more..

    Fort Proctor image
My husband and I drove to Shell Beach to see Fort Proctor (also known as Fort Beauregard or Beauregard's Castle). Be sure to take highway 46 because highway 300 is closed halfway down the road. At Shell Beach, we wanted to see the fort that was across the Gulf Outlet canal. We were not disappointed. We could see the fort but even better with binoculars. The fort can be accessed by boat. At Shell Beach, there is no beach but the many canals and fishing boats were nice to see. We drove to the end of highway 624 and enjoyed seeing more canals and fishing boats. Some of the fisherman were sorting clams and shrimp then loading them into bags. That was interesting as well. See more..

  39. 5.0 John James Audubon Bridge (1 review)
    - Second longest cable-stayed span in the Western Hemisphere
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
Completed and opened in 2011, the John James Audubon Bridge is a Mississippi River crossing between Pointe Coupee and West Feliciana parishes in south central Louisiana, near St. Francisville. The four-lane bridge, which conveys Louisiana Highway 10, has the second longest cable-stayed span in the Western Hemisphere at 1,583 feet and has a total length of 12,883 feet. It replaces the ferry between the communities of New Roads and St. Francisville. It also serves as the only bridge structure on the Mississippi River between Natchez, Mississippi, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It provides highway traffic where centuries of ferry crossings and longer commutes had been the norm. It was named after noted naturalist and artist John James Audubon, who dedicated his life to painting all of the birds in North America and painted 32 of his famous works in his Birds of America series while residing at Oakley Plantation in St. Francisville. Naming the new bridge after Audubon is significant to the project because it exemplifies the importance and preservation of the rich natural history of the region. See more..

  41. 5.0 Donaldsonville Historic District (1 review)
    - Gateway to Cajun and Plantation Country
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
Donaldsonville is the gateway to Louisiana's Cajun and Plantation Country, one of the state's oldest incorporated cities, the state capitol from 1829 to 1831. And the Donaldsonville Historic District contains the finest collection of buildings dating to the antebellum era of any Louisiana river town above New Orleans. It is bounded by the Mississippi River on the north, Bayou La Fourche on the south, Church Street on the east and Marchand Drive on the west. Railroad Avenue, the town's main street, bisects the district. Visitors can explore and admire the many sites by taking a 2.5-mile tour. Stroll along the Mississippi River levee and watch the ship traffic. Among the sites are the Mississippi Riverwalk, the River Road African-American Museum, Ascension Catholic Church built in the late 1800s and serving a parish established in 1772, Palo Alto and St. Emma Plantations, Ascension Parish Courthouse and Grapevine Cafe and Gallery. Also the B. Lemann & Bro. Department Store, a historic landmark and the oldest family owned department store in Louisiana and the Landry Tomb, a 20-foot-tall granite monument and burial vault in the cemetery of Ascension Catholic Church that was built in 1845 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. 44. 5.0 Woodriff Falls (1 review)
    - Climb the rocks for a close-up view
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
You've probably never seen anything as unique nor perhaps as picturesque as Woodriff Falls. Located eight miles from St. Francisville, Louisiana, a 25-minute drive via Creek Road past Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge, in West Feliciana Parish, Woodriff Falls sits along the Woodriff Ditch near the Mississippi River. One of the most appealing things about these small falls is that the water tumbles down from an overhanging shelf. Over the centuries, as the water has cascaded over the rocky ledge, the evolution and erosion has resulted in the formation of a cave behind the water, allowing visitors to enter a cool area and get a very interesting photograph. In addition, there is a surrounding set of rocks that has formed a shelter that invites visitors to climb them to experience the waterfall close-up. Woodriff Falls is so remote that it rarely is visited, even by locals, but once you arrive and view the picturesque landscape, you know it was worth the trip. See more..
