The Presbytere was designed in 1791 to match the Cabildo, alongside St. Louis Cathedral in the French Quarter. It stands today as a beautiful reminder of both Louisiana's singular past and its vibrant present. The Presbytere, originally called Casa Curial or "Ecclesiastical House," was built on the site of the residence, or presbytere, of the Capuchin monks. The building was used for commercial purposes until 1834 when it became a courthouse. In 1911, it became part of the Louisiana State Museum. 4.5Hermann-Grima House(502 reviews) - Excellent tour - highly recommend Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • History Museums
This restored French Quarter home built in 1831, includes a Federalist architectural façade, original operating open-hearth kitchen, urban slave quarters, and expansive courtyard. The Urban Enslavement Tour at Hermann-Grima House, looks at the experiences of those who were enslaved in an urban setting, how that differed from those enslaved in rural settings, and how the contributions of people of African descent have shaped New Orleans. Condé Nast Traveler voted it one of the best tours in New Orleans and the only tour listed from a museum. We believe that nothing tells a story like a home. In addition, the property’s 19th-century carriage house is home to the The Exchange Shop, originally founded in the 1881 by The Woman’s Exchange and one of the oldest women-led non-profits in the South.See more..

4.5Plaquemine Lock(23 reviews) - Mississippi engineering at its most ingenious Spent < 1 hour History Museums
We stumbled upon Plaquemine, it’s not exactly New Orleans or Baton Rouge, but it is between the two, just south of BR, also on the mighty Mississippi. The historic lock, now decommissioned, is quite something; in its day an engineering marvel. Stanley, the local who was today manning the small museum housed within the lock, was extraordinarily well informed and clearly passionate about his subject. He engenders a real enthusiasm for the engineering and the underlying geography that necessitated the construction. If you are any kind of a mechanical or historical or engineering nerd, you will really get a lot out of this visit.See more..

4.5Southern Forest Heritage Museum(13 reviews) - We Should Have Allocated a Full Day for This One Wednesday: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Speciality Museums • Rail Services • History Museums
We were pleasantly surprised by the breadth and depth of the experience here. The bulk of the exhibits are based on the authentic ruins of a working sawmill that shows the progress of the industry from ~1900 to 1969. You'll walk through the actual plant powered by giant steam engines and learn the technology and economics that provided the lumber that built our homes in the early 20th century. As a bonus, you'll see excellent presentations of the CCC, which started the reforestation efforts of cut-over lands in central Louisiana, and impressive displays of WWII memorabilia and history of nearby Camp Claiborne and its vital role in forming the 82nd and 101st airborne divisions, and training armored divisions. Plus.. great exhibits on the life and work of Catherine Dormon, an incredible renaissance woman forester, artist, natural gardener and more, and Henry Hardtner, the father of reforestation. Ya gotta see this!See more..

I wasn't sure what to expect when we drove up to this little house. Turns out, this is where Jerry Lee Lewis was born and raised. His sister, Frankie Jean Lewis, now lives here and does tours in her home. The house is, interesting, and Frankie is very eccentric and full of energy. She has three cute dogs and tons of Jerry Lee Lewis memorabilia. It was cool to hear her stories about meeting Elvis, Johnny Cash and many more. She even has the original piano that they all played on from sun studio. Frankie does free tours but asks for donations. Please leave her one, she is a very sweet lady. The Louisiana Political Museum & Hall of Fame was created by an act of the Louisiana Legislature in the late 1980's. The museum is housed in the old Winnfield Railroad Depot (circa 1908) that was donated to the City of Winnfield by the L&A Railroad. After many volunteers, many long hours of arduous and sometimes challenging labor, and many monetary and material donations, the Grand Opening of the Museum was held on Huey Long's 100th birthday, August 30, 1003. . The museum has accumulated over 100,000 items of artifacts and memorabilia relating to politicians and the politics of Louisiana.
