Things to do & places to visit in Andalucia, Spain

Andalucia cover image
Distinctive architecture, sun-drenched resorts and eclectic small towns dot Andalusia, a dry, mountainous region of southern Spain that maintains echoes of its Moorish occupation. Spring and fall bring balmy temperatures, ideal for visiting Seville's cathedral, the world's largest Gothic structure, and the 1,200-year-old mosque in Córdoba. Romantics love Granada, home to the fortress of Alhambra and an inspiration to the late poet Federico García Lorca. Don't miss a dip in the sea along the Costa del Sol.

Andalucia #2 destination in Spain 2023. The average rating score is 4.52 based on 619.7k traveler reviews, of 296 attractions. Timezone: Europe/Madrid, current date and time: Monday, April 29, 2024, 10:00.

  1. 5.0 Plaza de Espana (44.5k reviews)
    - Some of Star Wars was Filmed Here
Monday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent More than 3 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
    Plaza de Espana image
We visited Plaza de Espana twice while we lived in Spain. The first time was on a Monday in April 2021 and the place was not busy at all! The second time, at the end of July/beginning of August, it was MUCH busier. It's much hotter this time of year but it does seem to be when everyone has the time off! We enjoyed watching a few people dance (they of course pass around a hat for money). There's not much to actually do in the Plaza but plenty of pretty photo ops! Part of the building was used in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, where Anakin and Padmé arrive on Naboo. Granted it was 5 years ago but apparently in 2018, Plaza de Espana in Seville was TripAdvisor's #2 top landmark of the year! See more..

    Sevilla Free Tours image
My husband and I booked a walking tour of the Santa Cruz quarter. As it turned out, we were the only two people who were there for the English-speaking tour. That's when we met Valentin who gave us the best tour we could have hoped for, sharing his love for Seville, his great knowledge of history, and lots of fascinating stories. Two hours flew by as Valentin walked us through the narrow streets of Santa Cruz and centuries of the rich history and culture of Seville and its surroundings in a very professional and fun way. He made it very personal and vivid, and we learned a lot. Thank you very very much, Valentin! We wish you the absolute best in all your future endeavors! See more..

    - Phenomenal Location to View the Alcazar, Alhambra and Generalife from Afar
Monday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites • Historic Walking Areas
    Mirador de San Nicolas image
Though there are supposed to be numerous miradors around the city, we ventured to this mirador due to multiple recommendations we saw. Though we got lost a bit trying to find it, the challenges were well worth it. Its situated perfectly across the Alhambra, Generalife and Alcazaba where you can view them from afar and at night, they’re lit up. Its best to plan on arriving at least 45 minutes or more before sunset if you wish to have a place to sit as it gets quite crowded the closer to sunset you get. Of interest nearby is the San Nicholas Church, a few restaurants, and later after sunset, you may be treated to a flamenco dance show and local artisans selling their wares. See more..
  9. 4.5 Generalife (11.4k reviews)
    - Beautiful Moorish Monument
Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • Gardens
    Generalife image
My son and I took a private tour of both Generalife and Alhambra on our trip to southern Spain last week. The guide really helped us see all the iconography throughout the compound, and helped us make sense of things. Going without a guide would also be a lovely experience, though. The cypress tree walk was incredible, along with the gardens, building - pretty much everything. Be sure to book your ticket ahead - only a certain number of people are allowed each day, and you get a timed slot to tour. See more..

    - Gorgeous Spanish neighbourhood
Spent 2-3 hours Neighborhoods • Historic Walking Areas
    Barrio Santa Cruz image
The Barrio Santa Cruz used to be the Jewish quarter. The streets are narrow and form a labyrinth. It’s easy to get lost among the jasmine-scented streets… only to discover a convent or a palace or a hotel. Many of the palaces have wrought iron gates suitable for peeping into their beautiful patios. There are many small stores and some artisan shops, as well as good art galleries. See more..

  14. 4.5 Puerto Marina Benalmadena (8.592 reviews)
    - Great place
Monday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Marinas
    Puerto Marina Benalmadena image
Located on the Costa del Sol, has proven itself as being one of the top marinas in the world. With many restaurants, shopping, attractions and nightlife. It has won the award "Best Marina in the World' several times. The Marina of Benalmadena officially opened in 1979, with the name "Port au Prince" but in1982 was named Puerto Marina Benalmadena. The thing that really stands out about the marina is its unique architecture/design, which has lead to its international recognition especially with our European tourists. Puerto Marina has a huge capacity to moor boats and yachts, with just over 1,000 moorings for boats from many different nationalities. 'Puerto Marina' is one of the Costa del Sol's busiest centres. There are loads of different shops including the shopping centre. On top of it all there is a large choice of quality restaurants. You are spoiled for choice. Fancy a drink or a dance? Or how about hitting a nightclub or pub? See more..

  16. 4.5 Malaga Cathedral (7.943 reviews)
    - Outstanding - a must visit
    Monday: 10:00 AM - 9:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • Churches & Cathedrals
    Malaga Cathedral image
Stunning both inside and out. Next time I'm going to investigate having a guided tour, so much to see. €12 Euro to gain access to this beautiful cathedral and also onto the roof. Less expensive if you don't want to go to the roof, but I would absolutely recommend it if you don't mind 150+ steps in a fairly confined space. Access to the roof is timed with a guide so if you are under time pressure, do ask at the ticket desk what time the next roof tour will begin. Then, views from the top are magnificent. A leader takes groups up and you get to spend approximately 35 minutes there. Not a tour, as such, but the leader will answer questions if you have them. They also have admission prices for children and 65+ adults. One of my favourite things to see and do in Malaga. There are toilets in the gift shop and also near the roof (if you are badly stuck!) First visit to Nerja for us and this spot is just stunning. Gorgeous in the morning, so tranquil and beautiful when all lit up on a night time. Sometimes there is street entertainment, while we were there there was an artist, who was amazing, a young girl playing a harp and other musicians and other nights. Gorgeous place. See more..

Travel along the beautiful cliffs of Chino Canyon from Coachella Valley to San Jacinto Peak on the world's largest rotating tram car. The ten-minute ride aboard the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway offers 360-degree views of the area’s rugged landscapes. At the top, besides lounging by the overlook, you can tour the nature exhibits, watch an educational documentary, and savor a meal at the restaurant or café. There are also 50 miles of hiking trails to be explored in the Mt. San Jacinto State Park Wilderness. But remember to bring a jacket along—it gets chilly on the mountaintop. – Tripadvisor See more..

    - Stunning bridge and views!
Spent More than 3 hours Bridges
    New Bridge image
The Puente Nuevo, or New Bridge, in Ronda is breathtaking! The architecture of it is impressive, and it looks like it is just clinging to the sides of the 300+ feet deep ravine. You can even see the ruins of the original bridge on the other side. The river runs through and it is very beautiful. I highly recommend visiting the bridge and the cute town of Ronda and then having a cocktail at one of the cute little bars. See more..
  20. 4.5 Royal Chapel of Granada (7.154 reviews)
    - Very Interesting Chapel and Crypt
Monday: 10:15 AM - 6:30 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites
    Royal Chapel of Granada image
The Chapel of the Catholic Kings was conceived as a burial site intimately linked to the Cathedral, but without merging with its architecture. It is built with a single nave, an octagonal presbytery preceded by bleachers, a transept with little development and a choir at its feet, for the functions of a pantheon. As a funeral chapel none, in Spain, it excels in size. In it you can appreciate both its simplicity and its wealth thanks to the generous endowment of the queen. The Royal Chapel houses the mortal remains of Don Fernando de Aragón and Dona Isabel de Castilla (who were initially resting in the convent of San Francisco de la Alhambra), as well as those of Dona Juana I, Don Felipe and Infante Miguel. Under the tombs there is a small crypt of marked austerity, in which are deposited the real, lead coffins, identified by the initial of each name on the cover. See more..

    Parque De La Paloma image
We discovered this lovely park five years ago while on holiday and could not wait to return this time. This is a well established park, with lots of facilities, and is a natural home to some wonderful wildlife. If you have kids they will love it as you stumble upon so many animals that roam freely around the park, there are terrapins in the central lake too. This is an oasis of relaxation, free to enter and so close to the tourist heart of Benalmadena. The park is easy to navigate and you can spend as much or as little time as you like here. 23. 4.5 Puerto de Malaga (6.670 reviews)
    - Nice walk and area to pass the time.
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Piers & Boardwalks
    Puerto de Malaga image
This is a very nice stretch to stroll along and take in the views and sights. We walked along the Paseo de Los Curas and found lots of cafes, restaurants and shops as well as street performers - singers, dancers and acrobats. There is a 'roof', of sorts, that does give a light bit of shade during hot and sunny days and there is a panoramic view of the harbour with its yachts and bigger ships. It does get very busy especially when the cruise ships are visiting. See more..
  24. 4.5 Castillo de Gibralfaro (6.024 reviews)
    - A good yomp up but worth it.
Monday: 9:00 AM - 8:00 PM Historic Sites • Castles
    Castillo de Gibralfaro image
A must to do if you are staying in Malaga. A good yomp up leads to spectacular views once inside. Just be careful on footwear as on the day we went it started to rain and the route down in trainers was a slippery nightmare! A €5:50 ticket combines the two sites which lasts for 48 hours, the castle only is €3. A must to do even if it’s just for the view, there is a road up if you need transport instead of walking. Rich in history…charming! There are many tourists, however, tours are well worth taking (we took ours as part of the “Hop on/Hop off” bus tour that included a 90 minute walking tour of this area. The tour guide was amazing, and it was well worth taking the tour to be able to learn all the history on this section of the city. Tours are booked in English, too, but be sure to ask for one that has an English speaking guide. See more..

A walking tour is a great way to see the top sights in the area, including the Hermitage of Santiago.
