Things to do & places to visit in Balearic Islands, Spain

Balearic Islands cover image
The brightest stars of Los Baleares are Majorca, Ibiza and peaceful Minorca. Situated between France and Africa, the archipelago's islands each have distinct characters. Majorca is the most developed and offers a mass of hotels, fast food joints and crowded beaches. Ibiza is loved by a hard partying set, including many gay visitors. It is also increasingly popular with upscale travelers, drawn by the chameleon island's reputation as "the new Provence." Pick an island and stake a claim on its sand.

Balearic Islands #6 destination in Spain 2023. The average rating score is 4.37 based on 184.0k traveler reviews, of 126 attractions. Timezone: Europe/Madrid, current date and time: Monday, April 29, 2024, 17:00.

    Es Vedra image
Be prepared to get there early or park a good 20 minutes walk from the viewing place. Some people playing music and groups but not detract from the scenery. Sunsets to the west of the rocks but with wide lens can capture both sunset and the rocks. Simply beautiful. Just about light enough to get back on the walk to the car but watch your step, very rocky! Head to Salines national Park, very beginning says no cars but it is fine and follow the pack! See more..

    Alcudia Old Town image
Surrounded by 14th-century walls, the pedestrianized Alcudia Old Town is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with a variety of restaurants, bars, and shops. Here, you can visit the Church of St. Jaume, stroll down the main street of Carrer Major, snap a picture with the Xara Gate, and enjoy splendid views as walk along the medieval walls. Plan your visit on market days, where you’ll find fresh produce, souvenirs, shoes, bags, and more. Join a walking tour led by a knowledgeable guide; it often includes a stop at the nearby Roman Pollentia ruins as well. – Tripadvisor See more..
  5. 4.5 Playa de Ses Illetes (5.723 reviews)
    - Amazing beach
    Beaches
    Playa de Ses Illetes image
Beautiful beach, a must do in Formentera. Looks like caribic due to its very long fine white sand and crystal blue waters. They are just very cold. No hotels or restaurants nearby, you should take something with you. The beach is far from the harbour where the ferry arrives so you will have to take a bus (yellow or blue line) and from there still walk around 25 minutes. So it is challenging but worth it. I wish there were better bus connections to encourage people to use public transport and avoid traffic jams! It is so sad that the government does not invest on it! Here is my tip to them!! 6. 4.5 Cala Comte (4.813 reviews)
    - Crowded, but beautiful
    Beaches
    Cala Comte image
Cala Comte was a beautiful beach, but it was very crowded. We took a cab there from Old Town Ibiza, and it was about 30-35 minutes and about 40 Euro. We went on a Saturday around 5, got a spot on the VERY crowded beach, and eventually was able to move up and get front row on the sand for the beach. Once the sun completely sets, everyone claps....just gives you chills just thinking about it? eh? :) Explore around here...theres a few different beaches (even a nudist beach with the CUTEST bar built into the side of the wall). Be mindful that you'll have to bring a cab number with you if you plan on taking a cab from Cala Comte. We were able to call one and it came shortly, but we did have a small moment of panic thinking we would be stuck there as it was getting pretty dark. Also, just be mindful that at times, in certain areas, the water can be rough. Overall, I'd go again. The sunset was beautiful, and we BYO rose, cups, and snacks for the "event". See more..

  8. 4.5 Playa de Muro Beach (4.546 reviews)
    - Beautiful- be careful of current though
    Beaches
    Playa de Muro Beach image
This 3.7-mile-long beach has calm and shallow waters (great for kids to swim in) and plenty of water sports available like parasailing and jet skiing. The beach is divided into four sections and is packed with cafés, bars, and designated play areas. One section is an unofficial "nude beach", and another has sand dunes to explore. You can get sunbeds, umbrellas, and personal lockers for a fee, and there are also free-to-use showers. It's also one of the safest beaches in the world, with more than enough lifeguards on duty and a thorough rescue system in place. – Tripadvisor See more..
  9. 4.5 Playa de Alcudia (4.484 reviews)
    - Soft sand and clear shallow waters

    Playa de Alcudia image
Nice beach soft sand and shallow waters. The sae is always calm no big waves and no strong current so it is good for families :) The beds are €6.50 to rent between 10am and 6pm which is worth it. Went out of season so it wasn’t too crowded :) would recommend ! See more..
  10. 4.5 Cala Turqueta (3.835 reviews)
    - Small island with plenty of lovely beaches
    Beaches
    Cala Turqueta image
We went at the end of season so it was really quiet which was what we needed at the time. A lot of the bars and restaurants were closed and as we were leaving on the 31st October the whole island was basically shutting down. As the island is small it makes sense to hire a car and tour around as there is plenty to see and do. See more..
  11. 4.5 Dalt Vila (3.561 reviews)
    - Photogenic buildings and stunning panoramas
    Neighborhoods
    Dalt Vila image
Arrived at Ibiza Town by ferry boat, close to the main entrance gate to the old town. There are signposts but I recommend taking a street map just in case. Highlights were the rampart bastions and cathedral square, from which there were spectacular vistas of the harbour or south towards Cala En Bossa, the salt pans and hills. There are various galleries and museums in Dalt Vila but I had time only to explore the pedestrian streets. People do live here so you'll see washing strung out above your head, with bikes on balconies, which adds to the atmosphere. I particularly liked venturing off piste, exploring narrow alleys and steps, with walls cloaked in bougainvillae or morning glory. I could have spent all day here. Tip: the cheapest bottle of water was available in the cathedral. My only quibbles were the apparent absence of public toilets and the lethal, shiny cobbled slopes when heading downhill. I suggest you wear shoes with better grip than my trainers! See more..
  12. 4.5 Cap de Formentor (3.056 reviews)
    - Go by bus!
Spent 2-3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Cap de Formentor image
Cap de Formentor is the northernmost point of the island of Majorca, far from the main tourist haunts. Nine miles of winding road and hairpin bends lead up to the Formentor lighthouse; the views are breathtaking all the way up to the top. On a clear day, you’ll be able to spot neighboring ports and islands. The drive can be challenging, and cars are banned on stretches of the road during the warmer months. Consider getting on a coach from Port de Pollenca, or hiking up from the splendid Formentor Beach. Book a boat tour to enjoy the cape from a different perspective. – Tripadvisor See more..
  13. 4.5 Playa de Son Bou (3.012 reviews)
    - The best Playa in Menorca.
    Beaches
    Playa de Son Bou image
At the end, after many years we can say "Son Bou is the best beach in Menorca! ". There is space and opportunities for everyone, families with children, teens, couples, groups of friends ... and naked nudist. Son Bou it's big, long, beautiful and the water sometime, when sea is quiet it's like a Cristal. It's very easy to understand the different areas it's dedicated to different customers but there is always space for to enjoy. For me Son Bou have some possibilities for to improve a bit, and my suggestion it's for the municipal administration of Alajor. 1) Improve the grounds of the Big Dirt Parking lot because you could be environmentally friendly without kicking up all that dust and putting a city employee or two in to regulate the parking. 2) Increase Showers. 3) Add no less than 2 managed public toilets. 4) Put is back the little train pre covid and (but this is very ambitious) 5) Reduce or remove the 2 big hotel towers. but it's absolutely a must of Menorca. 14. 4.5 Cala Mitjana (2.724 reviews)
    - Best visited out of season
Monday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent More than 3 hours Beaches
    Cala Mitjana image
Very attractive but like similar popular beaches in Menorca it quickly becomes crowded. Shame really, it is probably best enjoyed on the low season. We arrived pretty early, the water was clear (no film) and there was just one boat moored up, but there was a slight sulphuric smell near the waters edge. There were a fair number of people snorkeling - but I doubt that there was a great deal to see as any fish would have been scared off by the hoards of people. We left just before lunch. See more..
  15. 4.5 Castell de Eivissa (2.723 reviews)
    - Breathtaking-not literally
    Castles
    Castell de Eivissa image
Breathtaking- not literally! A mix of tradition and cosmopolitan feel, crowded but you had room to breath. It was the perfect romantic walk. Hint: There is always more to see, twice we almost ended our walk by accident. Reach the top to the clock, come back from the other side at the port, end in an amazing luxurious plaza See more..
  16. 4.5 Mahon Port (2.513 reviews)

    Mahon Port image
This was unexpectedly spectacular. The bluffs between the high and lower city sections could not have more impressive. Everything was so clean and well maintained so as to make this the pristine jewel that it is. How lucky were we, to have this beautiful view upon arrival and departure from the port. See more..

  18. 4.5 Parc Natural de Mondrago (2.369 reviews)
    - Marvellous Mondrago,
Spent More than 3 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Parc Natural de Mondrago image
This beautiful protected coastal park stretches over 1,893 acres - so plenty of space to explore. Worthwhile to plan to come for the day & pack towels etc , plus perhaps a picnic/drinks ( or stock up at the shop up from the park entrance.) IMO this is an unmissable location if you’re holidaying in the south, and it’s only €3 by bus from Cala d’Or which takes around 20-25 minutes. There are wooden dining benches amongst the trees ( so expect visitors to hop by) and also a beach cafe. The many various pathways & trails have interesting nature info boards dotted along the way so you know what to look out for in this natural habitat. This place caters for those who want to be by a beach in a lovely location and pursue water activities, and also those who enjoy walking ‍♀️‍♂️& exploring the diverse woodlands & craggy shores. 20. 4.5 Cala Macarelleta (2.105 reviews)
    - Stunning definitely worth a visit
    Beaches
    Cala Macarelleta image
This is a really stunning beach and well worth a visit, and the extra 10 minute walk from Cala Macarella. On the day we visited, the road and parking were closed and you could only get there by bus. We caught the 69 bus from Ciutadella which was stress free and probably the best way to get there given how narrow the road to the beach is. See more..

  22. 4.5 Cala Millor Beach (1.892 reviews)
    - Warm tuquoise sea
    Beaches
    Cala Millor Beach image
Beautiful turquoise sea (after it cleared up from a storm). It was pretty warm. There are quite a lot of rocks in the sea, but they are not sharp and you can see where areas are clear of rocks as there will be more people in the sea. It was exceptionally clean and not too many looky lookys interupting you. 2 sunbeds and a parasol (with secure safe) was 14 euros for the day (and you could come and go) See more..
  23. 4.5 Playa del Puerto de Pollensa (1.889 reviews)
    - A lovely beach in a lovely area with stunning views!
    Beaches
Playa del Puerto de Pollensa image
As per the title a lovely beach in a lovely area with stunning views. We visited in September 2022 and although it was still quite busy there was just a relaxing hum / vibe (NO loud music blasting from any of the bars or cafe's). There are also some excellent restaurants to visit. We will return! See more..
  24. 4.5 Cala Agulla (1.758 reviews)
    - Crystal-clear water & almost white sand
    Beaches
    Cala Agulla image
Cala Agulla is a beautiful beach with crystal-clear water and almost white sand. In the background, there are pine trees spreading shadow and their wonderful smell. Around noon, the beach is likely to become very crowded, which however is not surprising considering its beauty. To anyone who likes walking I highly recommend taking the tour through the woods to Cala Mesquida. You will come along a smaller beach, have a fantastic view on Mesquida and maybe even come across some animals within the nature reserve. See more..
  25. 4.5 Puerto de Ciutadella (1.517 reviews)
    - It does not disappoint
Spent 2-3 hours Piers & Boardwalks
    Puerto de Ciutadella image
A wonderful setting with bobbing boats under historic walls. The restaurants are mostly expensive and probably variable in quality - best to head for Cafe Balear at the end. Parking can be a nightmare in Ciutadella, easiest at the free car park above the port on the side away from the old city - look for signs for Port Antik See more..

Specially beautiful. We got there from the other side as the road the beach specific parking lot was closed. So we walked about one hour over two small hills and crossed two beaches. The whole way is magic with this reddish sand beach and hills, stones. Impressive beauty. Unforgettable. Never experienced a beach like this. The combination of cristal clear sea water and the small stone island in front of the beach were just another planet scenery. Great for snorkeling and easy swim till the stone island in front of it. 29. 4.5 Es Cap de Barbaria (1.210 reviews)
    - Beautiful cliffs and a nice little hike.
    Lighthouses
    Es Cap de Barbaria image
The first surprise began once we reached the top of the hill of the parking area. The lighthouse was a bit further away than we thought. 1.7km to be exact. The hike was very pleasant though leading you through the nature. (Take water on hot days!!). At the end of the path lies the lighthouse offering some great views from the coast. See more..
  30. 4.5 Cuevas de Arta (1.158 reviews)
    - Stunning historic caves
    Monday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Caverns & Caves
    Cuevas de Arta image
Came here July 2021 with three teenage boys. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and spoke in every language for the tourist group. The caves themselves are quite spectacular but set to the lighting and classical music it was nothing short of breathtaking. There are many caves around the Majorcan coast but this must surely be among the best. See more..
