    Cami de Ronda
From the several attractive little towns of Majorca the one of Alcudia is special because of its extensive walls that still surround it. In combination with the nearby ruins of Roman Pollentia a visit of old Alcudia makes for a great cultural experience. There are pretty narrow streets with flagstones, surrounded by houses in traditional architecture. The whole old town is for pedestrians only, also it doesn't feel really touristy, so it makes for pleasant strolls. A highlight here though is the 'Cami de Ronda', a walk along the mediaval walls, sometimes outside the old town, sometimes inside and for a part also on top of the wall. There are stairs by the Porta de Mallorca, also known as Porta de Sant Sebastià, that take on up to the around 6m high wall walk. Behind a parapet on the outer side and a modern railing inside one goes for about 250 meters till the former Porta de la Vila Roja, of which nothing can be seen anymore. Here steps take one down again. Besides the Porta de Mallorca to the west there is only one other Porta to be seen, the Porta des Molls or Porta de Xara to the east, which now stands all by itself, separated from the walls. The history of this defensive structure goes back to the early 14th century, when Alcudia was founded by the then King of Majorca, James II from the house of Aragon. His father, with the surname 'El Conqueridor', had taken the island from the Arabs, who at least have given the town its name: 'Alcudia' comes from 'al kudj', Arabic for 'hill'. In their days just a farmhouse was here, not far from the by then already forgotten Roman town of Pollentia.

Great place, just be careful of taxi queues.
Old town is great, pretty little Spanish streets running through ruins. Plenty of shops and places to eat. Can walk from alcudia hotels in about 30mins. It costs around €7 one way for a taxi if you flag it down. Keep in mind if you plan to taxi home just as the market stalls close, you will be stuck in a queue for the taxis, it’s quicker to walk.
