    - A good yomp up but worth it.

    Castillo de Gibralfaro image
A must to do if you are staying in Malaga. A good yomp up leads to spectacular views once inside. Just be careful on footwear as on the day we went it started to rain and the route down in trainers was a slippery nightmare! A €5:50 ticket combines the two sites which lasts for 48 hours, the castle only is €3. A must to do even if it’s just for the view, there is a road up if you need transport instead of walking. 3. 4.0 Castillo de Santa Ana (1.025 reviews)
    - Nice little (free) castle to visit, nothing special
    Castles
    Castillo de Santa Ana image
Perhaps a nice visit if in the area (as there is not much by way of tourism around here), but not worth the trip otherwise. You get a view from the tower, but considering you're not very high up, again the view is nothing special. There is really nothing to see inside. See more..
  4. 4.5 Castillo de Almodovar (964 reviews)
    - I Loved It
Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 2:30 PM Spent 1-2 hours Castles
See more..
  5. 4.5 Castillo de Santa Catalina (791 reviews)
    - Walking up to the castle and Cruz
    Historic Sites • Castles
    Castillo de Santa Catalina image
If you are used to walking and set off in the morning when it's fresh (we went about 8.30 on a mid-September morning), it's a very nice walk up. You have to start from the Circonvalacion on the city side - if you go straight up from Palacio de Villadompardo you'll come out at more or less the right point. then follow the dirt track road, or short-cut paths up along the old walls. The people in the tourist office will explain it to you, and it's shown on the Andalucia region Jaen map. We are quite fit but stopped to lot ot take photos etc and it took less than an hour. Bear in mind, though that if you want to actually go inside the castle it opens at 10 a.m. weekend mornings and only p.m. during the week. We took all the short-cuts going up and followed the dirt track coming down, you go through pinewood and olive groves so it's a very pleasant way to spend a morning. You need trainers, closed shoes, there's some broken glass and it's a bit stony. See more..
  6. 5.0 Nasrid Palaces (649 reviews)

    Nasrid Palaces image
The Alhambra itself is free to wander around but the Nasrid Palaces and Alcazaba require tickets. They are available online 3 months before the day you want to visit. Don’t hesitate in purchasing one. Enter the site at the Justice Gate (puerta de la justicia). Bus #C32 will drop you off at this gate. Once you enter the open plaza and go past the restrooms, turn left and enter the lineup no more than 15 minutes before your designated time. Bring your I.D.or Passport as we were asked for our I.D.s upon entering a few of inside attractions. Generalife" is unmissable and was appointed by UNESCO, in 1984, as World Heritage Site. How can you dare to miss it? Enjoy! See more..
  7. 4.5 Arcos de la Frontera (610 reviews)
    - On the Andalucian White Village Route
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Castles
    Arcos de la Frontera image
Stayed here in February but by no means closed up completely. This beautiful little village lies southwest of Seville, easy to get to by car (not sure about public transport) and is a mix of the old Arcos and modern on the edges of the town. Possible to eat and drink reasonably to around 11 in the evening at this time of year. Stunning views of the castle from the low road. Well stocked supermarkets, Carrefour and El Jamon two of the biggest with reasonable prices. Well placed to visit round about, Jerez, Cadiz, Medina Sidonia, Sanlucar de Barrameda. See more..
  8. 5.0 Fortaleza de la Mota (524 reviews) from $8.56
    - Imposing and well restored.
Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Castles
    Fortaleza de la Mota image
Declared Heritage of Cultural Interest of Andalusia. The monumental group of the Fortress of La Mota is strategically perched on the peak of a rugged hill, 1033 m. above sea level. These features, its structure and location, enabled it to have a panoramic view, like a natural watchtower, over the surrounding area. Its most significant historic moment took place during the Islamic invasion: the Castle of La Mota was ordered to be built by the second Lord of the Kingdom of Granada "Aben-abus Ben-Zeiri", around the year 1000. The old walled city included several religious, administrative and government buildings, as well as commercial centres, and was the home of civil and ecclesiastical authorities. One of the most remarkable buildings is the citadel, built on the highest point of the enclosure, at 1033 metres above sea level. It is comprised of three towers joined by the walls that surround the bailey. The Homage tower, 20 m high, that of the Candle or the Bell, in charge of surveillance of the area in conjunction with the network of watchtowers all over the surrounding land. And lastly, the tower of La Mocha, an excellent lookout point over the city. Within the monumental group of the Fortress of La Mota, there are several themed areas explaining the concept of frontier, the way of life of its inhabitants, the role of the various areas and the relationship of the Fortress with the surrounding areas. Timetable: Autumn/Winter (15 Oct to 31 Mar): 10:00h 17:30h. 10. 4.5 Palace of Medina Sidonia (329 reviews)
    - Really worth a visit!
    Castles
    Palace of Medina Sidonia image
Before I start a note of warning: the address given on tripadvisor is not entirely correct, so neither are the directions given by Google Maps, which had us milling around for more than an hour without finding it! So, here's the correct address: Plaza de los condes de niebla 1, Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Once we found this out, it appeared to be around the corner from our appartment! The entrance-fee is €5, which includes the garden. The guide unfortunately only speaks Spanish, but the palace is so beautiful that it needs no guide for you to thouroughly enjoy it! The palace is still fully furnished with contemporary furniture, paintings, tapestries and other works of art. We were with a group of 15, including some young children and a baby carried by its father, which wasn't made a problem of at all, neither by the guide nor by the visitors. A visit to the tourist information office will provide you with the times the tours are held. See more..

He guided visit local route in the Hamma Bury Castle, it is a prickly Almohad fortress that has been completely preserved dese the tenth century, thanks to its fabulous wall made of mud. Inside found archaeological remains from the Bronze Age along with remains of a Roman mausoleum. During the visit they will meet the fierce fighting that occurred between Muslims and Christians until the final conquest in 1225 by Fernando III El Santo, the keep and alcalzarejo are Christian era. We thought this castle was one of the best restored that we saw in Andalucía. We bought tickets there, no line, it was Monday. Discount for seniors. QR code available for the audio guide which is a bit lengthy but good. Very interesting history. We recommend it. 45 min from Cádiz. See more..
  13. 4.0 Castillo de Niebla (245 reviews)
    - Worth a look around if you're in the area
    Castles
    Castillo de Niebla image
The Mazmorras (Dungeons) showing the types of torture is very good, though we had been to the Museum of Torture in Granada so had seen it and more before. I know it's odd using a term like "very good" for torture - which is horrific - but for me, it's the only way I can really understand the hideousness of how humans could be to one another, so it's a visual history lesson. It's also nice to walk around the outside and see some of the views from the upper parts. As with so many things in Spain, it's fairly priced at 4€ per adult so definitely worth an hour of your time if you're in the area. Easy to get to and there is street parking around, as well as toilets in the castle itself. Like with many of these attractions, it was very quiet when we went in May with only 5 or so other people there during our visit. See more..

  15. 4.5 Arab Castle (205 reviews)
    - Visit to El Castillo de Olvear
    Castles
    Arab Castle image
My wife visited the castle as we were driving from Malaga to Sevilla. When we arrived there was one couple already in the castle. We were let in and allowed to explore on our own. It was very peaceful. It really is incredible how this place was built 900 years ago. We walked around and enjoyed the views from above. Note: the circular staircase to the top in has narrow steps on the inside. Take your time and the views will be worth it. Very enjoyable. There a museum and gift shop when you finish. This is a special place for me as my ancestors originated from here before heading to Mexico City and then to California. A must for any Olvera. See more..
  16. 4.5 Castillo de Castellar de la Frontera (192 reviews)

My Husband and I recently celebrated our One Year Wedding Anniversary at the Hotel Castillo de Castellar. The warm, wonderful Staff put fresh flowers as well as a box of Chocolates in our room, which was a special touch and very much appreciated! Both the Castle and surrounding Town are simply magical to explore! The view from our room and roof top were spectacular, accommodations spotless and all together charming, meals were delicious and comforting...we both had a perfectly memorable experience and will return soon! 17. 4.5 Castillo De Cortegana (159 reviews)
    - Fascinating castle with superb views over the Sierras
    Castles
    Castillo De Cortegana image
Cortegana castle is definitely worth a detour if you are exploring the Heuva region. The castle is perched high on a hill overlooking the village, and has superb views over the surrounding countryside. You don't have to be interested in history or architecture to be able to appreciate this little gem. The castle is well preserved, and a handy printed guide in English explained the history of the building and the purpose of each rooms. The underground cistern was fun to see and visit. The entrance was a little hidden, and I suggest you walk around the whole outside of the castle (rather than just assume one locked door indicates the castle is closed). The castle was very cheap to visit, only 2 Euros per person. I think an hour at most for a visit. There was no toilet inside (nor in the nearby car park), but we discovered a few bushes which provided shelter and needed watering! See more..

We did a half day trip from Estepona, and as such also visited Jimena de la Frontera, with the castle as a highlight. The view from the top is simply breathtaking, and shows all Andalusia is about. Definitively worth a visit. See more..
  19. 4.5 Castillo de Luna (106 reviews)

    Castillo de Luna image
all people talk about Zahara, Conil, Caños, Bolonia and Novo, but this village is a perfect mixture of history, architecture pearls and sandy white beaches even in the core town of La Costilla seaside area, if you go to the outskirts you will find paradise beaches as Punta Candor. Fortunately not many hotels so you could only go and see cos it is very expensive too book in this charming fishing and historical village. Lets keep the secret! See more..
