The Santa Maria fountain located in the center of the square near the Cathedral was built in 1564 to mark the completion of works to bring water to the city. Water was supplied from a mine 2 kilometers from the city to the terminal, and then, accumulating, was fed to the city. The Baeza architect Ginés Martínez (mentioned on the fountain itself) executed the fountain in the form of a Roman triumphal arch with eight allegorical caryatids, alluding to Baeza's Iberian-Roman past.
