This is an amazing place to view cliff dwellings. Having visited Mesa Verde recently, this is much more intimate and much less crowded. We visited on a Sunday in late September and still found a parking spot in the visitor center parking lot. There were far fewer people on the trails than I expected for a weekend. There wasn't really any backup at any of the ladders into the caves and people seemed respectful of distancing and mask usage where needed. There is a trail guide available for $2.00 which is worth it for information as you walk the loop trail. Be sure to walk the extra distance to the Alcove House. If you are able, it is worth climbing the several ladders to the top for the view. If not, it is still impressive to see from below.See more..
Went over Memorial Day to visit NP in this area of the country. Stopped first at the Carlsbad Caverns. Once entering the park entrance it is a 7 mile drive to the visitor center where you will get checked in for your cave ticket. Make sure you go on line a receiver a day and time you want to go, as to enter in the cave you must have a reservation. to just drive up the the top and walk around you do not. However since they are in a drought, all the trails are closed, even the 9 mile driving loop. We opted to do the natural entrance walk down to the high room. the walk down can be slippery, so were good shoes and take a light jacket as it is cool in the cave. If you have any type of breathing or heart conditions I would recommend to ride the elevator down. But by walking down you will see a lot of interesting formations that are not in the big room. Also stop by the gift shop and pay the $5.00 for the hand held device that you can listen to at designated stops along the walking path to here interesting facts. The cave is awesome, take about 2 hours to stop and look at the formations and read the signs. We went trice the time were were there, two different days, and the second time we rode the elevators down and walked out. the walk out is not that hard, but agin if any respiratory, heart of joint problems, take the elevator back up. They did have the small nature trail open that is at the end of the parkng lot. Saw a havenSee more..

5.0New Mexico River Adventures - Day Tours(1.388 reviews) - Rock&Raft trip - Our guide Michelle was AMAZING! Thursday: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM River Rafting & Tubing • Climbing Tours • Water Sports • Stand Up Paddleboarding • Kayaking & Canoeing
We booked the Rock and Raft package where we rock climbed in the morning and rafted in the afternoon. Our guide was Michelle and she was simply amazing. She was so friendly and patient. She took the time to help us first time rock climbers with the ins and outs of climbing. My son was very interested and Michelle took the time to explain the names of the different types of cracks and how to approach them when climbing. After rock climbing, we stopped for lunch. I was expecting sandwiches or something easy, but we were treated with an actual meal of fajitas. After lunch, we hit the river. While the water was lower due to it being late July, Michelle still made the rapids fun. We had such a great time and it was the highlight of our trip to NM from TX. If you want to rock climb, Michelle is the guide you want. Thanks again Michelle for such a great day!See more..
Excellent visitor's center when compared to others. Lots of parking, the people are friendly, and the cave tour processing was very efficient and easy to follow. Because they currently limit the number of persons going into the cave, we had purchased a reserved spot online ($1 each). Our time was 9:30, but we arrived early at 8:30 and they told us to go ahead early. Cool! The exhibits were great as well with a very informative film explaining how the caves got here in the first place. The gift shop is pretty good. It does carry lots of useless merchandise unrelated to Carlsbad Caverns, but it also had some good stuff. I also like that the restaurant maintains its charm from earlier days.See more..
It was such a great experience we enjoyed that day. The staff were very friendly and knew their job. It was mostly voluntary workers and they knew their job and enjoyed it very much. It was such well planned and the views were spectacular indeed. Lunch was included and was delicious. We would thoroughly recommend this train experience to anyone who is thinking about it.See more..

5.0Broken Saddle Riding Company(392 reviews) - Great Trail Ride! Thursday: 6:00 AM - 8:00 PM Horseback Riding Tours
Excellent trail rides! Very happy and healthy horses, and great scenery. There were 4 of us on the ride, and our guide was very good with the local history. I love that the horses were allowed to canter/trot, as I hate plodding along in a line. We climbed up to a scenic ridge, where our guide took pictures of us on our horses. Highly recommend this stable.See more..

The volunteers of the New Mexico Steam Locomotive & Railroad Historical Society are restoring the 1944 Santa Fe (AT&SF) Steam Locomotive No. 2926, a 4-8-4 “Northern,” to be fully operational. After over 20 years of work, and with much billowing steam, hissing, and rumbling, 2926 moved under her own power in 2021! She is not a static museum piece. This is a working restoration operation staffed with skilled volunteer welders, pipe-fitters, mechanics and many other trades. Free tours are available to visitors on Wednesdays and Saturdays. You'll be issued a hard hat and a personal guide who will present a hands-on introduction to this very large and majestic locomotive, cab, and its tender! Adults, children, and groups are welcome for tours, 9AM - 2PM. You can call ahead to check if the operation is closed due to adverse weather. Parking is free and donations are important to keep the restoration moving forward. Merchandise is available for purchase from the gift shop. Bring your camera.See more..
5.0Gila National Forest(196 reviews) - Wonderful Cliff Dwellings hike Thursday: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM Spent 2-3 hours Forests
This place is definitely worth a visit if anywhere in the vicinity of Silver City. The hike to the cliff dwellings is quite easy and the loop only will take about an hour and a 1/2 to 2 hours. There are also two interesting sights very close to the Cliff Dwellings trailhead. At the nearby Lower Scorpion picnic area there are pictographs if one walks off to the right from the parking area. There is also a large sign at the trailhead leading to another small two-room cliff dwelling. The walk takes about 5 to 10 minutes. Onr more tip... As you head back towards Silver City you will pass a Trading Post store a couple of miles down the road on your left. It is definitely worthwhile. They have homemade ice cream that is really truly excellent. The flavour of this month, September 2020, was prickly pear. Wow! They also have other interesting flavours like lemon-berry and offer a really nice selection of gifts in their store. They even have some Acoma pottery.See more..

The cabin is just the perfect setup for fishing-focused travelers, scheduling all meals to accommodate when you’re meeting your guides or returning from your day of trout slaying. We will absolutely be returning on a future trip!See more..
5.0Wild Rivers Recreation Area(181 reviews) - Hiked into Rio Grande Gorge from Cebolla Mesa. Nature & Wildlife Areas
Great hike down to the convergence of the Rio Grande and Red Rivers. Wonderful bridge across the Red River. NOTE: Access to the trail, and camping at the edge of the mesa, requires several miles on a dirt road. If there is any rain, I would not take the road to this trail. If it is and has been dry, as it was for us, the road was passable, with care, though there were very deep ruts to be avoided. We had a small SUV. A woman at the campsite had done it in her Prius (very carefully). Big Arsenic Springs Trail will take you to the bottom of the gorge from a different Mesa.See more..
5.0Jemez Mountains(166 reviews) - Beautiful & tallest falls in the Jemez Mountains Mountains • Volcanos
My husband and I went to Jemez Falls on a Wednesday afternoon. We reached the falls trail head by entering the Jemez Falls Campground, staying on main campground road, passing the campground sites on the right and going to the end of the road (about 1 mile). There is a parking lot for about 20 vehicles and 2 parking spaces were available when we arrived. We parked then hiked the easy 1/4 mile to the overlook. The falls were beautiful. A few teenagers made their way to the bottom of the falls and were playing in the water. There is no trail to the bottom of the falls and the hill is quite steep. There are pit restrooms. There is no charge to hike the trail or park. We spent about an hour at the location. Do not miss the Jemez Falls, the tallest falls in the Jemez Mountains.See more..

5.0New Wave Rafting(96 reviews) - Great fun, and post-COVID ready Thursday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM River Rafting & Tubing • Self-Guided Tours & Rentals • Day Trips
We had a BLAST on our whitewater rafting trip with New Wave in June 2020. They had just reopened following COVID restrictions, but had taken many proactive steps to make us feel safe and comfortable on our trip. They made accommodations so that my wife and I could have a trip by ourselves to further limit exposure. Our guide, Jesse, was very knowledgeable about the river and the ecology and geology that surrounds it. We did a morning run down the Racetrack course, which is not as intimidating as the name may have you believe. With a couple of good paddlers, a group of any rafting skill level could make it through in a relatively short time. We would heartily recommend a trip with New Wave if you're staying in the Santa Fe or Taos area. In our case, we stayed in Santa Fe, so drove up to the river, and after we finished, we continued the beautiful drive up to Taos and got lunch there before turning back towards our accommodations.See more..

My mom and I went on a trail ride of beautiful Ghost Ranch with our amazing trail guide, Dustin! He was so knowledgeable and engaging as he shared stories about Georgia O’Keefe, Archuleta Brothers, paleontology, and surrounding geography. If you’re a first time rider, no fear! They will help you every step of the ride including demonstrations of how to mount/dismount and they even provide a saddle bag with water! The group stopped for pictures so we have mementos. Our ride went right by Georgia O’Keefe’s house and we could see the landscape that inspired some of her art. The horses were sweet and happy to show us their backyard. 100% recommend this ride and hopefully you are fortunate enough to ride with Dustin. Thanks Ghost Ranch Trail Rides!See more..

We had a personalized tour of the studio. Listening to the music and the history added to the ambiance. It was like a "Back to the Future" moment as if time stopped in the 50's. You could picture Buddy Holly eating in the kitchen and Norm doing his magic in what was considered a state of the art recording studio. When Holly performed in England, a young Paul McCartney recalls the tremendous impact it had on his life. Thanks to Ken Broad and living legend David Bigham of The Roses and his wife, for sharing their stories. We chose the Lower Cave Tour because it seemed like a good balance between time and difficulty. I went into it without great expectations but I was very pleasantly surprised by the experience. We did the Natural Entrance and King's Palace tours the day prior and both were decent but the paved paths gave everything a very staid, ho-hum quality. Don't get me wrong... the formations are beautiful and the history is fascinating but it could easily be a feature in a Disney park. The Lower Cave Tour is much different. You're descending on ropes and ladders, walking on the actual cave floor, without all the permanent lighting, observing the features from inches away and seeing the evidence of 120 years of exploration, not all of which has been kind to the cave. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and our guides (Rangers Andy and Kelly) were extremely knowledgeable and personable. Five stars doesn't seem like enough!See more..
