The museum is not very big; an hour is enough time to see everything. But what a collection of minerals! Mostly arranged by regions of the world where they were found, the gem samples have tremendous variety in size, shape and color. Seeing the difference between gold as found in the ground and pyrites ("fools gold") was particularly interesting. The museum also has several examples of petrified wood, some in the display cases and some large pieces in front of the building. If you find yourself in Socorro, definitely take time to visit the museum. See more..

This is a wonderful local museum. The history is easy to follow, and the displays are filled with interesting information. It’s clear the people who run this museum care a lot about their areas history, and it made me want to care too. I was really interested by a lot of the information they included, like the stories about the war and the Trinity site, Alamogordos early history, and the geology of the region (shown with hand crafted dioramas!).
