  1. 5.0 Bandelier National Monument (2.226 reviews)
    - Amazing Cliff Dwellings!

This is an amazing place to view cliff dwellings. Having visited Mesa Verde recently, this is much more intimate and much less crowded. We visited on a Sunday in late September and still found a parking spot in the visitor center parking lot. There were far fewer people on the trails than I expected for a weekend. There wasn't really any backup at any of the ladders into the caves and people seemed respectful of distancing and mask usage where needed. There is a trail guide available for $2.00 which is worth it for information as you walk the loop trail. Be sure to walk the extra distance to the Alcove House. If you are able, it is worth climbing the several ladders to the top for the view. If not, it is still impressive to see from below. See more..
  2. 4.5 Soledad Canyon Day Use Area (64 reviews)
    - Beautiful and accessible

Soledad Canyon Day Use Area image
I shouldn't recommend this hike. It is relatively undiscovered. But, here is my traitorous review: The trail takes a large loop without much elevation change, so is easy for everyone. The view is marvelous, it is peaceful, and you feel 100 miles from the city because the canyon opens up after you enter a narrow portal. Also, there is a hidden treasure of a waterfall if you dare venture a little further. Look for it yourself. The area residents are not hiker-friendly, so don't park on the road outside the gate. It is a premier hike. No facilities. None. So, be prepared. See more..

  5. 3.5 Gutierrez Canyon Open Space (3 reviews)
    - Great hidden open space for those who want to be alone
    Canyons
ABQ has tons of open space, few are as little known as Gutierrez Canyon. It's actually in Cedar Crest, east of ABQ. Take Highway 14 to the Cedar Crest Post Office. Drive to the back of the post office's dirt parking lot just west of the post office. There you'll find a badly marked trailhead with a post and a trail. The hike itself is quite easy of a hike. I'd advise going during dry times and NOT in winter. There's one section that sees very little sunlight and becomes nearly impassable when snow, ice, or rain have softened the ground, and this section is near the beginning, ruining your trip. It's my understanding that the open space is now over 700 acres. But we've only hiked the Gutierrez Canyon portion. It's not terribly well marked and "canyon" is used lightly. It's not your typical breathtaking canyon. But it's a brilliantly untouched landscape. VERY few people hike here. The only thing I fear is now that this review exists, others will enjoy my secluded open space. See more..
  6. 5.0 Agua Sarca Canyon (1 review)
    - Ever Changing

A secluded hiking trail that climbs through the rugged canyon and is shaded with aspen and gambel oak. See more..
  7. 5.0 San Lorenzo Canyon (1 review)
    - Stunning, hidden gem!
    Spent 2-3 hours Canyons
San Lorenzo Canyon is a challenge to find, but very worth the effort if you've got an adventurous spirit. There is a labyrinth of slot canyons wild countless opportunities for exploration, bouldering, climbing, and hiking. You can drive through the length of the main canyon, so don't be deterred by the challenging looking road. It's easy to get lost and if you climb to the top ridges, very easy to run into dead end cliffs. Make extra time, bring lots of water (the place is completely dry), and keep track of your surroundings. If you like hidden adventures, this is a must find&explore. See more..
