Christopher “Kit” Carson, is perhaps Taos' most famous resident. He was a fur trapper among the earliest Western explorers, a scout during the first mapping of pioneer trails, a cattle and sheep rancher, a transcontinental courier, U.S. Native American agent, and an officer in the United States Army. Yet he was more than any of those things. Some people say he was a hero who was instrumental in opening up the West. Others say he was a rugged frontiersman who understood the ways of Native Americans better than any other Westerner. Still others maintain that he was an Indian hater whose only interest was to fight and kill Native Americans. He never accepted any of these labels, and neither have modern biographers who have portrayed him as an enigmatic Purchased by Kit Carson for his bride Josefa in 1843, this 3-room adobe home displays artifacts, antique firearms and other pioneer belongings, Kit Carson memorabilia and an exhaustive supply of books about New Mexico.See more..

Museum was closed .. as is most everything during this tumultuous year of 2020 .. where everything is blown way out of proportion. You can visit the cemetary at any time ... it's pretty spooky in there ... I saw the billboards, so I had to find the time to stop and see this historical grave site, even though no one is even sure where his actual body is. All in all its an interesting story. I was in the cemetary alone, and got a pretty spooky feeling, telling me to leave now, right after I spent some time at Billy's site. I've seen ghosts walking at Gettysburg, at 1am with friends. Ever since, I don't question the feelings I get at cemeteries. See more..

The museum is not very big; an hour is enough time to see everything. But what a collection of minerals! Mostly arranged by regions of the world where they were found, the gem samples have tremendous variety in size, shape and color. Seeing the difference between gold as found in the ground and pyrites ("fools gold") was particularly interesting. The museum also has several examples of petrified wood, some in the display cases and some large pieces in front of the building. If you find yourself in Socorro, definitely take time to visit the museum.See more..

This museum has free admission and parking. It is small. The size of an old depot. But, it's well maintained and interesting. One room is laid out with model trains. You can tell that a lot of work went into it and well worth seeing (if you're into that sort of thing). Fortunately while we were there, a locomotive pulled up right behind the depot, to drop off tankers and pick up box cars. That was very cool. We really enjoyed watching that.See more..
