    - With the docent, climb up and then down into the decorated Kiva...feel the ancestors
Thursday: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Monuments & Statues
    Coronado Historic Site image
We were very fortunate to have the site to ourselves with a private docent tour of the restored Kiva paintings. The pueblo was occupied from about 1325 to end of 16th century. These murals represent one of the finest examples of pre-contact Native American art to be found anywhere in North America. We climbed up a wood ladder and down a ladder into the Kiva itself. It was mystic. We had never seen such paintings previously. 17 layers of wall murals were removed and preserved and reproduction murals were painted on its reconstructed interiors. Many of the original murals are in the site’s visitor center museum. No photographs are allowed in this kiva. See more..

We enjoyed our visit to the ruins. There are three sites to visit. My son enjoyed the junior ranger program. We drove to all three sites and walked amongst the ruins. It was a beautiful day. Fort Union National Monument image
This fort had so much to offer than we thought. Great stop to stretch your legs after a long drive. The for was very large at one time, but you can still get the perspective of how everything was laid out, and some walls and fireplaces are still standing. Great tour guides. Nice spot that is dog friendly. Clear pathed trails. Nice breeze coming through the plains on a warmer day. The Junior Park Rangers were very friendly. This sight is under construction but there was a mobile office pods in the parking lot that offers a gift shops with a bunch of fun & informative books, etc. See more..

A short drive from Albuquerque and Bernalillo, the Jemez National Historic Landmark is one of the most beautiful prehistoric and historic sites in the Southwest. It includes the stone ruins of a 700 year old village and the San José de los Jemez church dating to 1621. The village of Giusewa was built in the narrow San Diego Canyon by the ancestors of the present-day people of Jemez Pueblo. The visitor center contains exhibitions that tell the story of the site through the words of the Jemez people. A 1,400-foot interpretive trail winds through the impressive site ruins. See more..
  9. 4.5 Rio Grande del Norte National Monument (128 reviews)
    - The Third time is the charm
    Monuments & Statues
Rio Grande del Norte National Monument image
We have visited this area three times and the first time was before it became a National monument. I think this time was the best because we entered through the Visitors center area and toured the area where the two great rivers converge. We visited in November of 2020 during the Covid 19 pandemic and apparently most people had decided to stay home because we were almost alone in the park. As we entered the park from Questa we spotted a large Big Horn Sheep ram with almost a full curl. See more..
  10. 4.0 Route 66 Monument (126 reviews)
    - Trip Advisor photo misleading for this monunent

    Route 66 Monument image
We drove by looking for the deserted motel and old graffiti-covered pickup as shown in TA for this attraction. Stopped in the Route 66 Museum and was directed to the concrete base with the chrome-looking 66 with the tail fin from a 60s era car in their parking lot. I was able to climb up the base for a photo op. Sad to see so many deserted reminders of a once exciting era in faded and run down buildings. See more..
  11. 4.5 Street Sculptures (124 reviews)
    - Great Destination
    Monuments & Statues
    Street Sculptures image
Only by accident did we come across the information of street sculptures in Artesia. They were so good that we would go out of our way to see them and advise you to do the same. There are numerous clusters of sculpture scenes throughout this small city. There is a scene of a working oil rig with workers. Near the library is a stack of Classics with children atop. There are cowboy roping scenes and more. These and more are all in bronze. See more..
  12. 4.5 Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument (100 reviews)
    - Beautiful Mountain Range to visit
Spent More than 3 hours Monuments & Statues
Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument image
Our 9 day trip was scheduled to see 5 national parks but I found a couple of good National Monuments to visit as well. This igneous formation was the most interesting a really most beautiful mountain range we saw on our trip. Our entire group had fun getting on the rocks and stretching our legs. One interesting part of the visit was the drive to the mountains through the Bureau of Land Management. This is slows straight road in the southwest and it is patrolled for speed. The reason is free range cattle that are everywhere and add a little to the monument experience. Still is was the mountains that looked like organ pipes that drew us here. Whether on the east or west sides they were equally an interesting. Additionally, the rocks were fun to climb and made our bunch of 50s and 60s feel like kids. See more..

  14. 4.5 Bosque Redondo Memorial (67 reviews)
    - The State of New Mexico comes through with excellence at Bosque Redondo
    Thursday: 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM Monuments & Statues
    Bosque Redondo Memorial image
Moving, clearly illustrated, and great outdoor audio tour at Bosque Redondo Memorial. This is kind of a sacred place. Lots of bad stuff happened here in the 1860's, but the memorial includes the story of the Apache and Navajo resiliance as well, which is inspirational. I would take the detour off of I-40 east or west if traveling with teenagers, especially. Tip: Ft. Sumner itself is a tourist desert. Best restaurant I could find was a sort-of "food court" in the Allsup's Convenience Store. Catfish on a bed of fried okra was my choice. Be sure to get to the "real" Memorial which opened in May 2022. The Billy the Kid Grave has a Memorial as well, but it's not the one you want. See more..

Mostly ruins now but great history. Goes back a thousand years for native settlements. For me the real claim to fame is that when it was a US fort it was occupied by the Buffalo Soldiers. Worth passing by. See more..
